Panther sr. boys ringers WINGHAM -- The South Huron:-----' The District High School senior boys rugby team kept host Wingham F.E. Madill off the scoreboard on their way to a 17-8 win May 7. Thee senior Panthers (and -some juniors) were enthusiastic and ares - sive in their play, South Huron coach Terry O'Rourke said. Ryan Parker scored a try on a superb cutback run. Brad Baker had a strong game that included scoring a try on a bashing run up the wing. Steve Rasenberg scored a try on the end of a fine buildup from his team- mates. Captain Jason Neil played another strong two way game and kicked one convert. Khampaye Inthisorn and Bram Steele also played well. 1 diihesaiiiie,- wed against Madill and lost 39-5: O'Rourke said Madill's superior size was a cru- cial factor in his team's loss, adding the Panthers put in an excellent effort and forced Madill to earn their points. Jodi Truemner scored South Huron's lone try on a heads up run on a penal- ty The junior boys were edged in extra time 22-19 by host Petroli % on May 4. Bryan Evans scored all the South Huron points with three tries and two converts. Tanner. Ingram, Mike Skinner, Mike Verhoog and James Atkins played strong games.. All three Panther rugby teams are set to compete in the London Cup on E Friday and the junior boys and girls travel to Walkerton May 17. Super week for Panther jr. girls soccer EXETER -- The South Huron District High School junior girls soccer team scored in bunches last week on their way to two league wins. The junior girls beat Wingham F.E. Madill 4-1 at Canners Field on May 6. Panther goals were scored by Niki Vermeulen, Jessica Davies, Amanda Wuerth and Heidi Muller. Earlier in the week the juniors romped over host Seaforth 9-0. Vermeulen and Jenalyn Baker scored twice each and single goals were scored by Davies,. Heather Morgan, Kaitlyn VanOsch, Kelly Miners and Yvonne Rynen. The shutout was shared by Michelle Hakvoort and Davies. The two wins brings the junior girls record to 4-1- 1 (wins, losses, ties). The jurors nearly notched a tournament banner at. Goderich on April 30 but were nar- rowly defeated In the championship final.1.-e by+' St. Anne's. The Panthers got to the final by beating Seaforth 3 -ala by Vermeulen r o dmant` Stephens), Stratford St. Mike's in an overtime shootout (no score during regulation, shootout goals by Vermeulen, Wuerth, Kelli Fulton, Hakvoort and Kelly Rutten) and Clinton 3-1 (Megan Darling with two goals, Davies with one). The senior girls had a difficult week and lost both their games. The seniors lost at home to Madill 1-0 May 6. The Panthers dominated most of the game but they couldn't finish and the game remained scoreless till Madill stole the victory by scoring in the final minute. Earlier in the week the seniors found themselves down 2-0 to host Seaforth at the half and could not find their form. The sec- ond half was scoreless at both ends. The two losses brings the senior girls record to 2-3-1 meaning the Panthers have to win= their last regular season game of the season to make the playoffs. The junior and senior. girls host the last regular season games of the sea- son versus Clinton St. Anne's tomorrow (Thursday) at Canners Field, the juniors starting at 2 p.m. and the seniors following. The Huron finals- are May 18 at Clinton with the Hilton- Perth finals on May 20 (senior at Perth, junior at. Huron) and WOSSA on May 27-28. The seniors won the semi-final match in a shootout over Aylmer East Elgin 3-2. The game was knotted up 1-1 after regulation time. Chad Monteith scored South Huron's goal that kept the team in the lead till East Elgin scored with' eight minutes left in thegame. The Huron boys playoff are May 17', in Clinton with the Huron -Perth finals on May 19 (seniors in Perth, juniors. in, Win) and WOSSA finals on May 27-28 in Centennials win, Fury lose first game EXETER — The Exeter Centennials men's soccer team said a big hello to the First Division with a 2-0 win over London Marconi `B' at Canners Field Sunday. The two teams played a scoreless first half. Cents coach John Rasenberg said his team took control of the play once they kept the ball on the ground and used their superior speed. The first goal came on a penalty shot after Scott Rasenberg was hauled down in the penalty area. Luke Sims made no mis- take by putting the ball in the back of the net on the shot. Exeter's second goal came from a perfect vol- ley by Dan Martens over the Marconi defenders with Mark Brintnell rush- ing in to head the ball past the outstretched hands of the Marconi keeper. Rasenberg said the Cents defence was stingy giving up only three or four shots on net. Exeter's defence, led by sweeper Mark Bell, stop- per Mark Lynn and full- backs Adam Jean and John Flanagan, played well and midfielder Scott Rasenberg had a great game. Goalkeeper George McEwan notched the shutout. The Cents next travel to Chatham on May 16. Their next home game is May 30, 5 p.m., on the Rec Centre field versus the Latinos. The Exeter Fury Third Division soccer team started their seventh sea- son- on the wrong foot with a 2-0 home loss to Nairn on Sunday. Fury team spokesperson Jason, McFalls said the outcome could have been much .worse if not for the strong play of netminder Craig Winbow who came up with a couple of big saves. Nairn controlled play throughout the game and owned the scoring on an fortunate bounce that hopped over Wf nbow's outstretched arms. In the second half, the Fursidetenders were busy trying to hold off the attacking Nairn forwards. Nairn's efforts paid off with the insurance goal. Brian Brand played a solid game for Exeter in the middle of the fleld. The Fury next travel to Woodstock May 16. First to it.
