As reported in last week's T -A, Southside Construction, which bought the mall and the property to the east of the mall in January, has applied for an official plan amendment and a zoning bylaw amend- ment for the property. The application requests the land designation be changed from industrial to highway commercial. A public meeting on the application will be held in the Exeter coun- cil chambers on May 3 at 7:30 p.m. Southside president Vito Frijia told the T -A Monday the current valu-mart mall is "fairly tired" and said some mall tenants have shown interest in expanding. While Frijia admitted the possible expansion was in reaction to the new Canadian Tire store being built next to the valu-mart property, he said it is too premature to comment on the size or cost of a new expand- ed mall. Tune for cyclists to obey the rules HURON COUNTY — The Huron OPP will begin enforcing bicycle laws tomorrow (April 15) over concerns on the number of youths who were involved in bicycle accidents Last year. All bikes are to have a front light if in operation a half hour before sunset to a half hour after sun- rise. Bikes also -require a back red reflector or light and red reflective materi- al on the front forks. All bikes also must have some kind of warning horn or bell. Every cyclist under age 18 must wear a helmet that meets Highway Traffic Act regulations. Those age 16-18 are responsible for their own helmet use while the par- ents of boys and girls 'under 16 are responsible for their children's hel- met use. Cyclists must obey all traffic signs and signals, drive on the right hand. side of the road, ride sin- gle file on the street, never ride two on a bike, give correct hand signals using the left hand, walk bikes across crosswalks, pull to the rightfor faster vehicles and never attach themselves to moving vehicles. The cyclist is also expected to keep their bike in good working order including the prop- er maintenance of brakes, tires, handle bars, seat and chains. Huron OPP Const. Don Shropshall said wearing a helmet properly is important since 75 per cent of all bicycle related deaths result from head injuries. Wearing a hel- met can reduce cycling related head injuries by up to 85 per cent. If a helmet has been involved in an accident, replace it — it has done its job. Shropshall said many citizens have called them to say they wish, to see the bicycling rules enforced. Charges will be laid with parents respon- sible for tickets going to their children ages( 15 and under. Tickets will be issued to 16 and 17 year olds. "Through the ,proper use of your bicycle and obeying the rules of the road, you'll get there safely and be healthier too," Shropshall said.
