Cancer Research
fag.
Until the early 1930s, few people with cancer had any hope for a cure. During the
1930s, strides in research resulted in the successful recovery of 20% of patients
treated for cancer...Now, 50% of people treated for cancer are likely to recover
successfully. If we are to continue finding better methods of cancer pr_eyention and
treatment, they will come through intensive research.
Approximately half the money raised by the Canadian Cancer Society in Ontario goes to the most
promising research projects across Canada. Project grants are determined through a stringent
peer review system by the Society's research affiliate - the National Cancer Institute of Canada
(NCIC) - the single largest funder of cancer research in the country.
Approximately $35 million is awarded by the NCIC to cancer researchers across Canada each
year; researchers in Ontario receive half that amount. Projects that receive funding represent
the highest quality cancer research in Canada.
A large portion of the NCIC grants goes for "fundamental" research - to examine cells, oncogenes
and molecular -structure that will provide answers about manytypes of cancer.
Cancer Prevention
For the past 20 years, there has been a growing recognition that we need to balance our
expectations of advances in treatment with a greater emvhasis on preventive strategies. The
burden of cancer can be reduced in two ways - by preventing cancer from occurring at all and
by improving treatment and services for those who do develop the disease, as well as their
family and friends.
International cancer studies suggest that at least two-thirds of cancers are preventable.
