Capsule Comments
with Ernie Miatello
The Canadian Fitness and Lifestyle
Research Institute surveyed more than
2500 Canadians to see what prevented
them from exercising regularly: The most common
responses were: not enough time; not enough energy to
become more active; lack of motivation; and it costs too
much. What's your excuse?
To get started, choose an exercise and commit to a min-
imum of three sessions each week for six weeks at
least. That's how long it takes to adapt psychologically
to exercise and start reaping the benefits. You'll find
that you will continue because you feel better and ironi-
cally have more energy!
Interesting statistics: In North America, risk of maternal
death is 1 in 3700 pregnancies. In Europe -it's 1 in
4000. In Asia the maternal death risk is 1 in 65 while in
Africa it is 1 in 16.
Some medications can cause a dry mouth. For relief,
brush your teeth after each meal and floss daily, chew
sugar -free gum to stimulate saliva flow, suck sugar -free
lemon candies, avoid sugary sweets, sip 'water frequent
ly throughout the day. Finally, try artificial saliva prod-
ucts like Salivart or MoiStir available in the pharmacy.
It's unsafe to share prescribed medications with other
people. Your prescription is adapted to your condition,
your weight and many other personal factors. What
works for you may not be good for others.
