Jaclyn Marshall, a Grade 7 student at Usborne
Central, stands with her prize-winning science fair
project,"Types of Flour and Their Effect on Cake and
Bread." Marshall and the other students who finished
in the top four at Usborne's March 10 contest will go
on to the Regional Science Fair in Seaforth on April
7.Absent from the photo is Marshall's partner, Stacey
Crerar. Principal Jim Binns said Marshall and Crerar's
project was chosen the winner because it was well
organized and the students had a thorough under-
standing of scientific method.
WI `March' for meeting

VARNA - Church was in Varna on
Sunday with Elly Van Bergen with
the call to Worship. Next Sunday,
March 21, church will be in Goshen
with the Celebration of
Communion.
There w,,s a mistake in dates in
last weeks news. The Maundy
Thursday Service will be April 1 at
Varna Church at 7:30. Van
Bergen's Covenanting Service will
be Sunday April 11 at the Varna
Church at 7:30 p.m.
Dianne Peck and • Leisa
Stephenson are the Sunday School
Teachers for March 21 and Mavis
Govier and Lorraine Taylor for
Sunday March 28. Volunteers are
always needed. Please contact Lori

"Friendly Ways to
Preserve our Earth" was
read by Florence
Martene. Aldene Wolfe
suggested things in
nature that affect our
lives. A skit was per-
formed by Brenda and
Katharine Becker called
"Them of Birthday
Blues". During the social
part of the meeting, birth-
day wishes were sung.
Institute met at the hall
March 2 for International
Affairs meeting convened
by Brenda Sheppard.
The Roll Call was check
the March calendar for
Special Days. Secretary
Sheppard read the min-
utes of the last meeting
and treasurer Kaethe
Freiter read her report.
The business included the
W.I. Workshop in Hensall,
Exeter Quilt Show,
District Annual, Picnic
and Area convention.
The motto "Women
have rights and free-
doms" was given by
Kaethe Freiter. By work-
ing together we can be
successful. Special Days
of March: As of March 1,
1998 it was legal to grow
hemp in Canada. The
fibres can be used to
make textiles like carpet-
ing, the seed for cosmetic
products and other
things. March 5 is World
Day of Prayer. If we love
our neighbour as our-
selves, enmity will cease.
International Women's
Day was March 8.

Is Coming To Dinner at Goshen
United Church on Saturday April
10. Please help the Five Alive
Committee by informing one of
them before Easter weekend if you
plan to take part or if you prefer to
be a host or guest. Guests bring
casserole or salad or dessert, host
supplies incidentals.

The Community's sincere sympa-
thy goes out to the family of
Blanche Stephenson on the passing
of Blanche.
The Rec Committee hosted a St.
Patrick's Dance for families on
Saturday night which proved to be
quite successful.
Plans are also underway for the
Annual Canoe Rally. This year it
will be Sunday,- April 11 with regis-
tration to begin at 11:30 am. They
are also raffling off a 15 ft.

Tickets can be purchased from
any Rec Committee member, the
Stanley Township Office or the
Varna General Store. So get those
canoes dug out and ready to go!
The Rec Committee also has big
plans underway for their New
Year's Eve Dance. Tickets will be
on sale soon. They will be $50 a
person and includes a hot Buffet
supper at 7 p.m. and music by a
Livd Band 'Magnum'.
What a good way to ring in the
Millennium , right here in Varna.

The Varna Crokinole are hosting
a Crokinole Tournament on March
27 at the South Huron District High
School in Exeter to start at 1 p.m.
Cost is $5 per person and entries
are limited . Registration and

HuronAdult Day Centre holding public meeting
CLINTON — The Huron
Adult Day Centre is hold-
ing a public meeting on
March 24 in Grand Bend
at St. John's By the Lake
Anglican Church Hall.
The meeting will be'
held at 2 p.m. to inform
residents of a proposed
Grand Bend program at
the church hall.
The centre all ready has
a satellite office in Exeter.
,While the official open-
ing date for the Grand
Bend site has not been
set, the centre soon
expects an announcement
from the government on
funding for the project.
Those eligible for treat-
ment at the centre will be
referred from the Grand
Bend, southwest Huron
and North Lambton
areas.
Eligibility, referrals and
assessments will be han-
dled by the Community
Care Access case man-
agers for both counties,
with input from Day
Centre staff.
Transportation is pro-
vided along with a meal.
There is a small fee to off-
set the cost of meals and
transportation.
Staff from the centre
will attend the informa-
tion meeting in Grand
Bend, when the centre
hopes to announce an
opening date.
Volunteers for a small
advisory committee will
be recruited, as will
potential volunteers to
work with program staff
to provide meals, trans-
portation, whirlpool
bathing, social and recre-
ational opportunities.
Training is provided for
all volunteer positions.

BIRR — A 44 -year-old
St. Marys woman faces
several charges after an
early morning incident in
Birr March 14.
Teresa Dennis is
charged with mischief,
impaired driving, refuse
breathlyzer and resist
arrest after she had
approached a home to
ask for a battery boost on
Richmond St. in Birr,
London OPP Const. Doug
Graham said. Dennis
smashed a window at the
residence.
