Fulop named coach of the year
continued from page 14
Those who nominated him tell the
tale. Here's what "a friend" said
about Fulop en their nomination
• form: • .
"He is an example of a true citizen:
• kind; thoughtful; fair; punctual; has
concern for the players and their
families;• a good trainer; patient; no
partiality shown; likes to win."
• Several official nominations (and
even more unofficial ones called in to
the T -A under conditions their
names stay out of the. paper)- came
from both the baseball community
-and SHDHS.
Fulop waschosen for the honour
by a committee consisting of former -
South I Iuron Rec. Centre co -ordinator -
Lynn Farquhar, former Exeter Mayor
and SHIMS principal Bruce Shaw
and T -A sports editor Craig Bradford.
- The other nominees the committee.
reviewed were also winners
in their own rights. Those
nominees included: Grand
Bend's Ron 'Dann who has
been coaching Youth Bowling
Council at Zurich. Town and
Country Lanes for 14 years
and has coached young
bowlers for 30 years starting
in London; Crediton's Dick
Lord for• his 10`years- of
coaching hockey for Stephen
Minor hockey and the Huron -
Verdi AAA [takers; and Lord's
wife Deb Lord for her nine
years coaching Crediton mite
and peewee baseball teams.
- Fulop said winning the
award tame as a surprise
since he has scaled back his
coaching duties to just coach-
ing -cross country.
His motivation to coach
each sport was different,
Fulop said. -
"In cross country, it's just
good kids," he said. It takes
a lot of dedication and it's a
pleasure working v•ith thein."
With volleyball, Fulop filled.
a coaching vacancy one year
and simply continued to fill
the role.
"I was keen, but I didn't
know very much," he admit-
ted.
Fulop called coaching track
and field as "the most rrus-
trating of all the sports"
because there are so many skilled
sports involved and track and field is
traditionally the hardest sports pro-
gram to get athletes out for due to
the time of year (late spring). Fulop
stayed with the track events he knew
best: distance events like the 400 m
and longer.
As for why he kept coaching base-
ball?
"Just the love of the game," Fulop
said with a smile. "1 was just an aver-
age player. I think I was a better
coach than a player."
While winning was more of a focus
in baseball than the other sports he
coached. Fulop refused to take -any
credit for the all, -Ontario wins.
"It shows we had good players," he
said. "Good players make coaches
look good."
:Then Fulop shared his three tiered
coaching philosophy: "To have fun;
to make use of whatever talent you
have and develop it; to be success-
ful."
"As I got older the first two took
priority," Fulop said. "When 1 was
younger, winning was more impor-
tant."
Fulop said he has met many won-
derful people through coaching and
has developed many friendships.
"I've had very few people I've
coached or worked' with I didn't get
along with," he said. •
Fulop-can retire from teaching at
any time (his age and years teaching
are more than 85) but said he does-
n't know when he will.
"1 like it here," he said of SHDHS.
And don't worry about Fulop filling
his spare time away from coaching.
Ile plays a lot of golf, is a crokinole
champion and takes in a lot of har=
ness racing.

powerplay goals, the first
by Steve Vandenberk
(from Jeff Dalrymple and,
Downie) and the second
