Truck driving school opens in Exeter
I:XI:TF.R One of the trucking industry's
biggest challenges is obtaining and retaining
well -it allied and qualified drivers.
• Exeter's Veri Trucking Inc. has experienced
this problem I u sthand and have decided to work
tiWards a solution by opening their own driving'
school. `
"We,found out from'the Ministry of "
Fransporiation that they only require minimal
training and unfortunately most driving schools •
are only offering minimal training," said the
school's customer service representative .Bob
12 i "So that's why we decided io start our
owni school so that drivers could get -quality.
training._
"We, want to Offer more than just minimal
training." he said. "We want our students to
go on.and not only pass the
g(overnment's road test but also
pass company: road tests."
The Veri Institute
of -Professional VERT INSTiTUTE OF PROFES
Truck Driving . EXETER ONT. 0.4(V.I.P.)isa :
registered Pri s ate Vocational School for new
drivers and driver upgrades and is a member of
the Truck Training Schools Assocation of
Ontario(T.T.S.A:O.). -
V.1.P's mandate is to provide excellent
training to students io enable them to obtain a
class "AZ" drivers licence and begin a
successful career in -trucking. with Veri Trucking
Inc." -or another -carrier. .
• The four- to six-week long course includes
300 training. hours: These hours are divided '
'between 40 hours in class, 40 hours 'in the yard
and 240 -hours of on -the job training with a
certified trainer and compensation for expenses.
V.LP's Training Coordinator Larry Nevinger
is partjcul.arly proud of the on the job training
with compensation the school offers. .
"Noone else offers that," he said.
Students will also be offered computer based ,
and state of the art interactive training. in all
:aspects of trucking including reefers and air ride
suspensions, all with fully loaded equipment..
The school also feels it is different•from other
training facilities'because:they are committed to
not.onfy training but also placing students after
the course :is finished. • .•- -
"After they finish the course-there:is the-.
-opportunity of a possible job offer with Veri," •
said Righy. "And if we can't place them with us,
we will help them work with another carrier."
"Our goal is to have companies calling,us-and
saying 'send us a notherstudcnt because- they are-
so'well-trained', if we can't place them
ourselves," said Rigby.
Veri Trucking- has recruited'a group of six
.trucking industry professionals to.operate the
driving school. Between.themthey possess over
. 70 years of experience -in the industry.
So how much does this altcost?
Veri says their:fce is competitive with the
• industry standard and each •potcnlial. student has
•to go through -an industry needs assessment to
determine the, fee. .
Nevinger says there are various financial
assistance Programs availahle that can help offset
the cosi.
What dogs it take to be a truck driver?
•• ' "AII you have to have is
/////- the skills to train." said'
- - Rigby. "Because it is all In
the training -as long as you arc ready to
listen." .
Approximately. 4(X),000 Carmel i an s
■ -■ ■ • • earn their living in the
SIONAL TRUCK DRIVING commercial trucking ,
industry. About half those
jobs are in the .for -hire and private sectors.
- Despite that number, Nevinger and Rigby say..
that there is a real demand to find qualified
truckers.
In the end Nevinger-"advises-people interested
in.pursuing'a career in trucking -to. "look at what -
kind of training you will be getting Tor your
' money." • -
• Rigby added, -"it's a big responsibility driving a
• truck..youu can cause death or a lot of damage if ,
you not properly -trained:" '
The Veri Institute of .Prol,+ essional' Truck
' Driving officially opened its doors to students on
