Times Advocate, 1998-06-03, Page 27Times -Advocate, • lune 3, 1998 SOUTH HURON DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL TUB T' STUDENT OF THE YEAR WILL BE ANNOUNCED AT SOUTH HURON'S FORMAL - FRIDAY, JUNE 5 AT MIDNIGHT DAVE FARQUHAR In his five years as a student Dave's largest contributions tri South Huron have come through athletics. He has been an integral part of South Huron's Volleyball, Basketball and Soccer teams, all of which he has captained. He has demon- strated the leadership skills he developed while representing South Huron at the Ontario Educational Leadership Center in • the summer of 1996. -Dave enjoyed great success as an Athlete winning six Huron -Perth championships. reaching the WOSSA semi-finals three times. and the WOSSA finals twice. Ile•has been nominated for Top Male Athlete every year of his high school career and has received numerous individual awards for his efforts. Dave feels he has henefitted greatly from the superb athletic program at South Huron and hopes it will not he negatively affected in the coming years by govern • ment cutbacks. • Dave has also spent a lot of time organizing and parte ip: t ing in his school's intramural activities as a member of the Athletic Council for five years. and a member of the A.C. • Executive for three years. in three years as a'Senior, he has volunteered as -a referee for hoth Midget and Grade School Basketball. Dave is.the son of Bill and Linda Farquhar of Exeter'and he will he'attending Conestoga College next fall to receive a post secondary school education in .Business Marketing. Dave leaves South Huron taking nothing hut positive memories and he encourages all students to get involved and make. the most of their high school experience. Lard knows • he has' Throughout his years as-a'studcnt of South Huron, ian has been a positive part of the student body. ian enjoys sports, but holds his academics first and foremost. Ian Becker is the son of Peter and Sandy Becker of RR I (;rand Bend. Ian's hobhies.jnclude Drafting, sport: such as; Hockey, Badminton, Baseball and Ball Hockey Ian will he attending post secondary education, and aiming for a degree in civil engineering. Ian has also been the editor for the school yearbook, for the.past two years. facing manyohstacles and over coming them with an upbeat attitude, which he has had through his five years at South Huron. . Ian has taken part in intramural play within the school. also he has been a part of the school badminton team:. •ian has been a part of the school teams since grade 10, • with•trips to Huron- Perth each year. He also helped with.thc Junior Badminton team. ian has•been a volunteer in the "Huron Hi" cafeteria this last year, providing cxtra hands and jokes. The ups and downs and all the experiences which ian has faced has made him the.student he is today. •We hope these ' will lead him to the future he deserves and has earned. ti In his OAC year at South Huron D.H.S. Jacob Weber has been very successful. While maintaining a high average in his 9 OA( courses, he has been an active member of the award win ning SHIMS hands; Jacob Weber. son of Bill and ('ringer Weber of RRN3 Dashwood, has lived on the farm all his life. He likes cars, mototcycics, animals and enjoys driving his Jeep CJ -1 in Grand Bend after working at the Grand Bend Municipal • Harhdr' in the Summertime. • In his 5 years at South Huron, Jacob has keen -on the Honor Roll every year, and his OAC average this year should be in the.mid-eighties. His course load is made up mainly of com- puter, math and Science courses. He has done well in Math and , Science Contests and this year achieved•the highest score in this school on the Huron County and DeCartes math competi- tions. Besides working hard at school. Jacob has played the Trumpet in.the Jazz and Concert bands since grade 10. He has • also participated in various enrichment activities in the past. This fall he plans to attend the University of Waterloo for Mechanical Engineering. Jacob Weber hasachieved,a great deal and had lots of fun in his 5 years at South Huron D.N.S. and plans to do well in his post -secondary studies and beyond, while still being active in this community and wherever his career -may take him. SCOTT REID For the past five years Jeff has attended S.H.D.H.S, where he has dedicated countless hours to the pursuit of a great education. • During Jeff's tremendous five years at South Huron he has remained active in all aspects of theschool community. He has been involved in the guidance support team,.also known as GST. which helped grade 9 students get adjusted to high school. He' was a peer tutor for two years. tutonng in the area of mathematics. What should not be overlooked is Jeff's con- tribution to athletics. especially his time playing on the junior boys basketball team which made it to, W.O.S.S.A. But what could of been the beginning of a great career in athletics inedi- ble came to an end as Jaff made a sacrificing decision to focus his attention on academics and retire to the ranks of intramural sports for his final years of high school. For these five years Jeff has also obtained his credits in advanced level courses:and successfully completed his OAC courses. While handling this enormous and brain racking work load Jeff managed to obtain honour roll status every year. Jeff also managed to write math and chemistry competitions for the University of Waterloo. Jeff the son of Allan and Gail. Reid of Hensall: plans on attending University in the fall to pursue a degree in civil engineering. 'He will be remembered by people as one of the Reid twin's. and will'look back on his years at South Huron with good memories and will ce..tinue to be optimistic about the future. Scott, being a very courteous and conscientious student has acquired a great.education from our South Huron High School. while being very active within the school community. Scott has obtained his credits in advanced level classes all throughout school. then obtaining his OAC's in his final years. Taking these hard courses did not deter Scott from doing well as he has obtained honour roll status during his high school career. During Scott's earlier years in high school he wrote math and chemistry exams for the University of Waterloo. Academics is not what Scott is all about as he was able to find time for both academics and sports. He was able to balance them both into one busy schedule. In his high school debut he was on the track 'n' field team and the rugby team which attended WOSSA for their first time. He then pursued a great volleyball career leading to Huron -Perth finals and WOSSA, he also was part of the panthers Basketball team. While participating on school teams Scott found time to vol• unteer for the Guidance Support Team and South Hurons Athletic council. He also helped coached the midget boys vol- leyball team during his -senior year and took pan in all of South Huron's intramural sports. Scott, son of Allan and Gail Reid of Hensall plans to attend and fulfill a postsecondary education in the in the extremely challenging field of civil engineering starting this up coming fall. People will remember Scott as being one of the Reid twin's. and having a very. very optimistic and ambitious outlook on the futtue. Throughout her five glorious years at South -Huron Jen has created new friendships, developed her leadership abilities, sent her education to greater heights and had.lots of fun! in her third year she was involved with the South Huron . Drama production "Blind Dates" that travelled to the Sear's Drama Festival in Listowel. Jen was the ".sound girl" and in charge of all things musicrelated' Jen was also a member of the Peer Mentoring Program, and it's affiliate, the Sexual Assault Committee for two years These two programs allowed her the opportunity to create an awareness •of social issues within her school, and a chance meet a lot of great -people. h/. One of the most important things Jen became involved in was the Student's Council..She has been an active member for two years now. In her first year.she was the O. S..S. S.A. representative and this year she is the council's secretary. Being on Student's Council has brought a hit of stress to Jen's life but at the same time it has given her the chance to become a trite leader within her school. •. The most rewarding activity Jen has participated in'has been the Junior Lader Program at Camp Sylvan. She was a Junior Leader for twd years and loved it both times Being around a hunch of enthusiastic kids allowed Jen to show her true self. • She is an enthusiastic student that tries to the hest of her abil- ity to create smiles at South Huron! Next year she plans on attending university to study political science. She is the daughter of Deb Patterson of Dashwood and Al Wilbee of Ft -McMurray. Alberta Meagan Rat, daughter of Wayne and Ronnie Rat,. is actively • nvolved in the coriamuriity.and in high school Throughout , ighschonl Meagan has heen involved in -many extra -curricular activities Sports being a main focus in Meagan's life. she played on -four different high school teams For -the past. five. years 'Meagan has played volleyball, soccer. and liaskethalt where she represented South Huron at rhe All- Star game Meagan also was a ream member on rhe rugby team for two years. Meagan is not airways a ream member hut a coach where she volunteers her time to coaching rhe South •Huron haskethall camp for three years and coaching public school haskethall for the.past.three •years • . When Meagan is not nut competing she is working hard in the school by helping fellow students and friends Meagan is involved with Peer Mentoring_. the uance Support Team which helps grade 9 students (,,d adjust rn high school. Meagan was a Co -Op -student it the Ontario Provincial Police in Exeter which was an excellent learning experience and very enjoyable. Meagan is a well rounded student who has henefitted from all of her endeavours throughout .high school and the community • • Preslee Maver is the daughter of proud parents. Wayne and Joyce Maver. of Exeter. - During'her five year's at South Huron District High. School. Preslee has dedicated most of her time towards ath letics., Throughout her high school career. Preslee has worn the panther jersey for four different teams. She was a starter for four out of the five•yeart that she played field hockey and is consequently astwo time OFSAA champion. Besides field hockey she also played on the volleyball. rugby. and soccer .teams. which she was the captain of. Preslee has been named most valuable defence on the field hockey team for three years in a mw. With all these extracurricular activities. Preslee still has found the time to he a .vital asset -to the student council. serv- ing as co -premier. She also has been an active member in the athletic council for -the• last three years. ran a field hockey clinic at Exeter Public School and has coached [;shorn . • Public' School's girls haskethall team this'past year. Preslee Was still able to find the time to co-op at the Exeter Public School as a.'physical education teacher. Preslee is lovingly known as the school's mascot. 'The Panther' around' the - school; Preslee will he remembered for her extremelyi)ut• - going personality and her infinite school spirit. GO • PANTHERS -GO!! • SUNNY DINNEY a. i d Sunny Dinney, daughter of.Jon and lo -Anne Dinneyof Exeter. has been actively involved at South Huron and in the community it: throughout her life. This year Sunny was voted by her peers as South Huron's Student Council Premier and spent many hours „• overseeing the well being of her school. Along with luggltng.her busy school work. students council schedule ,and job.at Shopper's Drug Mart. Sunny played -on South Huron's soccer. volleyball and basketball teams during her five years in high school. Sunny was the recipient of South Huron's PAW award tier dedication to millet ics and academics. Sunny was given the most Sportsmanlike award for'basketball. In grade eleven Sunny was awarded the c4-1 honor of attending the Ontario Educational Leadership Camp. for her dedication and leadership within the school. • Over the past two years Sunny has volunteered her time to the Ausable Bayfied Conseriauon Authon.ty as a Junior counselor. at Camp Sylvan, while also spending five weeks of Camp Queen Elizabeth as a volunteer counselor. She used the skills learned from her Bronze Medallion. Cross. Aqua Leaders and CPR train- ing at Camp Queen Elizabeth: • . This winter Sunny organized and planned -a week long ski trip to Quebec city for 25 of her fellow classmates. and •spent a sum- mer in Germany as a foreign exchange student. This year Sunhy completed her OAC studies and is looking for- ward to pursuing her•degree in Business and Commerce at the University level, Overall Suhny has been keenly involved and immensely enjoyed her years aS a student of South Huron District High School. Tem has.been a very active and energetic participant in many different aspects of school.life at_South Huron. ' She is the Co - Deputy Premier of the Student Council, head of Prefects. and has served as a student representative to the School Advisory Council.' Hamacher has represented South Huron at leadership conferences- in Ottawa, and at the University of Western .Ontario. She has played the clarinet in the Concert Band for four years. During her high school career Hamacher has been a member of the Peer Mentoring programme which she found quite rewarding. She was also a Junior Leader at Camp Sylvan. The highlight of Haniather's academic career was achieving Honour Roll Status in Grade 12. Locally she was a member of the Exeter Junior Precision Skating Team. Overall Hamacher has lead an exciting life at South Huron and encourages others to get involved with extra curricular activities. Next year she plans to attend University to study •Social Sciences.
