"Our children...look forward to a
cure, to freedom from blood tests
and needles..."
Dear Editor:
On behalf of the children with juvenile diabetes,
we, the parents, would like to sincerely -thank our
Exeter.branch Shoppers Drug Mart, Leo Krahn, Cal
Seer and a special thanks to Jessica Zawalsky, for
your support and assistance in our preparation for
the Walk for Diabetes. Our children, Allison and
Donald, look forward to a cure, to freedom from
blood tests and needles, and to long and healthy lives
because of people who care, like our friends at
Shoppers, Thank you also to the staff of Shoppers -
we saw many of you on Saturday. and to our com-
munity who supported our cause. Many of you
expressed interest and affiliation with diabetes.
We will proudly represent Exeter next Sunday at
the annual Walkfor a cure. •

Nursing duties
"..,nurses should be given more
responsibility..."
Dear Editor:
• I find myself agreeing with the sentiments in
"Name- withheld's" letter 'A lack of care'. As I sec
it, the world has been changing over the last 40 years
or so, but the laws haven't been changed in any great
degree to reflect this. For example the Young
Criminals Act has only recently changed slightly. -
but doesn't go far enough.
In this instance, nurses are not allowed to treat
patients (not even a more potent painkiller) unless
there is a doctor present, but some are trained .to a
much higher degree than nurses of say 20 years ago.
I believe they are called Registered Practitioner
Nurses. I don't know, but I would expect that they
are fully capable of taking on,a lot more-responsibili-
ty,'even to the extent of replacing doctors in some
emergency situations. Our nurses at South Huron
Hospital could probably stabilize life threatened
patients for shipment to London.. If I suffered from a
heart attack, I would be prepared to put my chances
in their hands if all the doctors were taking a holiday
from tending patients. In other words, nurses should
be given more responsibility (with suitable compen-
sation) and emergency departments should never he
closed for want of a doctor. What would have hap-
pened if there had been a motoring catastrophe in the
area say. I wonder what the hypocritic oath says
about the doctor's behaviour:
To answer the question of how many people could
afford to refuse $560 etc.. I would say any practising
MD (or lawyer!).
It has been said that we have to attract more doc-
tors to the area. To do this, a compensation package
might he needed. One item in this package could be
any doctor living and practising ib Huron County he
cxemptfrom property taxes.
Yours sincerely.
John Sanderson.

Open letter to residents of Exeter and area
Make no mistake, we all appre-
• ciate the gravity'of
this situation...
Dear Editor: •
The purpose of this 'letter is to attempt to inform
the General Public as to what is happening at your
South Huron Hospital with regard to recent inter- _
ruptions in medical services. Firstly, this is not a po-
litical nor money issue. Simply put. we.do not have
enough doctors to staff the Emergency Room 24
hours a day. 7days a week. We, despite our -hest ef-
forts over the last several years, have been unable to
attract a single new full-time physician to our arca.
We have had some luck with pan -time doctors do-
ing part-time work in the Emergency, however This
is becoming spotty as well, as you have already no-
ticed. -
There are many reasons for this. The number of
the new graduates are making lifestyle a priority
and refusing to practise in small centres where there
is a greater demand on them. Many of 'these gradu-
ates as well wish to avoid hospital work entirely and
this certainly does not help us. Furthermore, recent
changes, in :Government legislation have discou-
raged many new physicians from starting in. full-
time practise anywhere and for the same reason a
number of these physicians have chosen to head to
the United States looking for greener pastures and i
must say in all fairness, 1 can't blame them.
Those of us still practising here are finding the de •
-
mands for medical services. both office and hospi-
tal. seem unending and arc increasing with our ag-
ing population. Our Medical Staff is getting older as
we ,will and with decreased manpower, we're find-
ing it more difficult to/ meet everyone's expecta-
tions. The doctors of South Huron Hospital with the
strong leadership and constant encouragement of
our Chief of Staff, Dr. Jadd, have tried to keep the -
.
he_ Emergency Room afloat as long as possible, hut
with no help coming, the problem overwhelmed us,
hence the interruption in service. • - -
Make no mistake, we all appreciate the gravity of
this situation, for apart from being providers of
health care, we also are consumers of it and in case
of any serious illness or injury, we and members of
our family must seek attention elsewhere also.
Most anyone who has read a newspaper recently
should realize this problem is not unique to 'Exeter.
Many small and even large cities such as Owen
Sound, Newbury, Petrolia and others are having
great difficulty in keeping the Emergency Rooms
open and indeed have been closed on occasion.
What can you do to help? First, do not condemn
the local doctors. We're doing the best wc can with
the resources that we have and ask for your under-
standing. Second, in order to attract any new full-
time physicians, the community needs a fully
equipped Clinic and provide financial incentives as
virtually every community seeking a new physician
is doing in an attempt to attract the few graduates
• that are out there. It is no guarantee that a Clinic
will bring a :physician to the community, but it -is
certainly a guarantee that without one, we have no
chance at all. Thirdly. I would encourage you to talk
to your local politicians and more specifically the
Provincial politicians to find some solutions to the
dilemma that Exeter and many communities across
this Province are finding themselves in with regards
to health care.
Yours truly
Bill Steciuk M.D.
Budget reductions
"The more complaints they get, the
more chance we have of getting
things changed."
Dear Editor:
I'm writing this letter in response to a letter I
received from the Township of Hay regarding
garbage pickup in the rural areas. 1 have had garbage
sitting in my garage for the past three weeks. Three
weeks ago the Bluewater Recycling truck missed our
road. So my garbage did not get picked up that
week. When 1 called the office to find out what hap-,
pened, they said they missed our road and.wondered
if I left it'out for pickup as someone had gone by on
Wednesday to pick up what the Blue Water
Recycling people had missed. 1 cannot leave my
garbage out due to animals getting into it, besides,
how was i to know someone was coming around
later that week to pick it up. I was not notified.
When I asked when they would be coming around
every week in the summer (that is what it said in my
tax notice) the reply was, "Oh we are not doing that
now." 1 therefore had to wait another two weeks for
garbage pickup. Do you know what messy diapers
smell like sitting in a hot garage for three weeks?
i mentioned my problem to a councillor, and the
matter was to be discussed that night. Well the prob-
lem was discussed to no avail. I received a letter say-
ing, "The collection change was initiated to assist in
expenditure reductions in the general budget. The
reasons for the reduction only to the rural Sreas arc
as follows: it was noted that many rural residents did
not put out garbage every week and it was felt that
the rural properties would have appropriate struc-
tures and/or a larger area where garbage could be
stored if necessary."
In my opinion people didn't put their garbage out
every week because"they weren't sure which week
the pickup was or they forgot about it because it is
bi-weekly. And as far as having a place to store
garbage, would council like to build something for
me. or would they like it stored on their front step.
Who likes to have garbage sitting around in the
country to have rodents, dogs, cats, bugs, etc. getting
into it not to mention the rotting stink. We pay our
taxes just like the Dashwood residents and the resi-
dents along 21 highway. They get weekly pickup in
the summer.
if you are annoyed and frustrated like myself, 1
suggest you contact your councillor. The more com-
plaints they get, the more chance wc have of getting
things changed. i also suggest you think twice of
who you vote for at,election time.
