celebrates

lion in l947' from a group of
friends who got together once a
week _to sit and knit; Beta Sigma
• Phi in Exeter now has three chap-
ters.
Fifty years ago, Irene (Beaupre)
Irving, whose father owned a store
at the north end of Exeter persuad-
ed her friends to organize them-
selves under Beta Sigma Phi, an in
ternational organization founded in
Abelene Kansas. Irving belonged
to the Sorority in Washington
where she worked during the sec-
- and world war.

twenty-six active members started
to work for the betterment of the
community, but, the main emphasis
of the International Sorority is.
placed on cultural awareness and
social activities.
• - Present and former members at-
tended. Four charter members
were welcomed: Ada Dinney, Ber—
nice Cann, Ilene Mathers.and Helen
Wescott.
The former members who came
the farthest were Ilene Burrows
from Winnipeg, Kathy Hook from
Peterborough and Jean Webber
from Cornwall.
Current Presidents are: Alpha
Tau Elaine Bogart, Beta Theta -
Janice Brock and Lambda Eta -
Tanya Allen. The total number of
members from the three chapters is
48;
Queensway
HENSALL - Fun and Fitness had
residents off to a good start Mon-
day morning. Christian Reform
women spent the afternoon visiting
with several residents.
Tuesdays Church service was led
by. Rev. Putman of the Greenway
United Church. Everyone found his
message very uplifting.
Wednesday, due to the rain, resi- -
dents were unable to be outdoors
for the planned barbecue, .so; the
barbecued food was brought in- .
doors to them while -the cook cheer-
fully endured a few raindrops pre-
paring it.
"Curly Top" starring Shirley
Temple was the featured video.
Thursday afternoon. This video
was loaned to the residents from
Diane Vollands collection .of Shir-
ley Temple movies.
Friendship Friday evening in the
retirement home lounge, focused •
on a card party and games evening.
With four tables going, there was
excellent participation.
Sunday brought a beautiful, sun=
ny day for the annual strawberry
social. Gary Boyle of London pro-
vided music for the afternoon.
Joyce Adkins of Hensall won the -
Four hundred dollars was raised for
the the Huron County Alzheimer
Society.

Church in the park on Wednesday,
June• 18 was well attended and
quite enjoyable. Also several from
Granton took . in the Bryanston
United Church annual chicken bar-
becue on Saturday June 21.
The Nichol family picnic was
held at the Granton park pavilion •
on Saturday, June 21.
Sympathy from the community to,
the family of Leona Klumpers of
RR6 St. Marys and formerly of
Granton who died at St. Marys Me-
morial Hospital on . Wednesday
June 18.

stitutes of Canada Convention and
Centennial celebration of the
founding of the Women's Institute
at Stoney Creek held at the Hamil-
ton Convention Centre June 17 to

Storyteller comes to library
HENSALL - Dynamic storyteller and author, Rob Neves, will be bring-
ing his entertaining stories to the Hensall Branch Library on Thursday July
3 at 11 a.m. Tickets are $2.50 at the library. Rob Neves has appeared at
the Family Literacy Festival, Clinton, every year since it started in 1994.
His humorous; energetic stories appeal to children of all ages.
This special event will mark the start of the Hensall Library's Summer
Reading Program, "Camp -Read -A -Lot", Children, ages 6 and up, can .en-
joy nature activities, stories and songs at the library throughout the sum-
mer. The cost of enjoying this program for eight weeks is only 55. Chil-
dren who register for Camp -Read -A -Lot by June 28. will receive a ticket
tolthe program with Rob Neves as parcof their registration package, for no
additional cost.
Tickets are available at the library. -To avoid disappointment get your
ticket soon, and register for Camp -Read -A -Lot, as space is limited.
