Roosters capturemens division title
LUCAN - After playing eight
games of slo-pitch baseball 'last
weekend, no one could blame any
of the players of the Lucan Roost-
ers for complaining about tiredness
and sore muscles. But it was all
worth it as the men's squad from
Lucan and area held on to a 9-5 vic-
tory. over Station Park of London
and then won the 'D' division at
the Sportsplex tournament in Lon-
don.
It wasn't an easy road to the title
for the Roosters. With the superb
pitching of Robert Pipe who
pitched all eight games allowing
only three walks, the Lucan squad
came up with five runs in the top of
the seventh inning and held on for a
narrow 11-10 win over Woodstock
Good Time Charlies. After defeat-
ing Station Park 17-9 and London's
Rehab Rebels 12-10 in games two
and three respectively on Saturday,
the Roosters were a perfect 3-0
record: entering playoff action next
day.
In game one of the playoff round
'on Sunday morning, the Roosters
bats were silenced for four innings
then falling behind 8-0 early in the
game. The locals fought back for
six runs to make the game close but
fell short en route to a 9-6 loss.
In game two of the playoffs, the
Roosters scored nine runs early and
held on to a 9-4 victory. After de-
feating the Rebels 12-8 in game
three, the stage was set for the final
showdown for the championship
against Station Park of London.
Because of an earlier loss, the
Roosters had to beat the London
team twice in• order to capture the
Title. With the Roosters trailing 7.6
going to the bottom of the seventh
inning, Captain -• Stacey Evans
scored the .tying 'run sending the
game into extra innings.
After giving up two runs in the
top half of the eighth inning, the
Roosters came .up with three big
runsin their half of the inning en
• route to a 10-9 victory.
In the final game, the Lucan team
scored five runs in the fifth inning
and held on for a 9-5 win.
'By winning the tournament; the
Lucan Roosters qualify for the La-
batt's tournament in London in ear-
ly September. `- '
After the tournament, coach Pat
Ryan had nothing but praise and
admiration-forhis team.
"This team had .a lot of character
and determination and never gave
. up no matter what the score was,"
he said. Ryan Was* also impressed
with the team's defence that al-
lowed only seven errors and turned
- six doubleplays: "With that kind of
defence it allows you to stay in the
game until the bats get going."
Exeter Express postpone: home
opener against Strathroy
EXETER - The Exeter. Express
senior mens- baseball team played
their home opener last Tuesday
night but a winner won't be de-
cided until June 10.
The game against Strathroy was -
postponed to a later date after the
umpires called it off when it be-
came too dark to play in the bottom
of the seventh inning. The game
was left -at a 3-3 tie and will resume
the next time Strathroy is scheduled
to play in Exeter.
"We had our chances," .said co-
- coach Doug.Fairbairn. "Both teams
.'had a chance to score in the seventh
inning."
Exeter came close to getting the
-go-ahead run in the bottom of the
seventh when Bill Shore singled.
The next baste/ also singled putting
•shore within scoring range, how -
:ever, Exeter's next two efforts at
bat didn't pull out the needed hits
to/drive the winning run home.. -
Scot -Russell took the mound for
the ' first four innings giving up /
three runs off five hits while strik-
ing. out. three batters. Dan Masse
pitched fon three innings striking
out four batters, and not allowing a
1 single run. ; •
EXeter scored' in thefirstinning
With hits from- Glover and Russell
and again -in the 'third off of hits
from Terry Genttner,' Rick Boon,
Glover and Russell.
Fairbairn_ said the incomplete
game was not adequate to judge his
team's performance and it's still to.
early to tell what type of a squad
they have this season. it will be dif-
ficult to judg6 since every teamrin
the league is' tightening their ros-
ters.
