Stenciling: a modern twist on traditional design
By Brenda Burke
T -A Reporter
HENSALL - Imagine a stenciled
scene on a wall in your home. Now
add muted colors, gradual shading
and minute detail.
"This type of stenciling is so dif-
ferent from what people think sten-
ciling is," claims Jackie Schutz, a
Hensall resident who expanded her
White Linen Interiors 'design busi-
ness last year to include mural sten-
ciling.
"You get more of a painted pic-
ture instead of a straight line," she
explained. "it's got character...I'm
trying to get away from the sten-
ciled look."
A multiple -sheet stenciling tech-
nique produces depth in this fin-
ished art form. Before she became a
self-taught stencilist, Schutz was in-
spired by an interior designer in
Cambridge to give traditional sten-
ciling a try. Since then, she has dis-
covered the potential of murals.
With decorating trends returning
to European -inspired textured. walls
and muted colors, Schutz finds
"people want something different"
from basic paint and wallpaper
methods, and more local residents
are becoming aware of stenciled
murals as a decorating option.
"We are very sheltered (from)
different ideas," while living in
small communities, she pointed out,
adding it'srefreshing to work with
new techniques.
For six local homes, she has giv-
en consultations and created orig-
inal murals. Half of her clients have
encouraged her to make her own ar-
tistic clioices. Because Schutz
makes the stencils and varies each
project, she appreciates this type of
freedom.
Murals can he developed on dry-
wall, wallpaper or panelling. In the
beginning, Schutz would plan out
designs before beginning each pro -

ject. Now she tends to 'go with the
flow,' creating and revising murals
produced with oil-based paint.
Although she has stenciled mu-
rals in a variety of rooms, she es-
pecially likes to work with those of
children. After completing her first
children's mural, which includes a
white picket fence surrounded by
flowers, cats, birds, butterflies and
clouds, she discovered a desire to
expand in this area, feeling it's im-
portant for kids to be surrounded by
a fun space.
For her May 31 open house,
which coincides with the annual
Hensall Community Yard Sale,
Schutz will create murals in three
rooms of her King Street home. It
takes her an estimated four- hours to
complete a large -$250 border and
12 hours to finish a $450 full bed-
room mural.
Schutz, who has taught stenciling
classes in Shakespeare, will offer
home-based .lessons this fall. Four
months ago, she began training'
Laura Dopp, of Hensall, in the mu-
ral technique.
"Not everybody can do this..; It's
so nice to get paid for something
you love to do," said Schutz, laugh-
ing at the memory of her past sec-
retarial work in Toronto. "It felt
right when I did (stenciling)."
