for shelter
STANLEY TOWNSHIP On
April (6, over 200 women teachers,
bus drivers, custodians. secretaries
and educational assistants em-
ployed by the Huron County Board
of Education joined together at the
Huron Women Teachers' Associa-
tion's Annual -Charter of Rights
Banquet and Auction. The event,
held at the Stanley Township Com-
munity Centre, commemorates the
anniversary of Me inclusion of
women into the Canadian Charter
of Rights in the mid 19110's..
The Federation's first Charter of
Rights Banquet in Huron began ap-
proximately 10 years ago, at which
time the Huron Women Teachers'
Association honored the occasion
by presenting a $250 cheque to
what was then called Survival
Through Friendship House. A long
association with the shelter began,
and within a few years the dinner
had expanded to an annual action
encompassing all female - employ-
ees of the Board and earning over
• $4,000 per year.
Michele Hansen. Director of. the
Shelter recognized this long-term
commitment Wednesday evening
and Susan Pye. Chair of the Board
of the. Women's Shelter and Coun-
selling Services Huron. presented
Willi Laurie. President of the
Women Teachers' Association with
a. plaque honoring the long-time
partnership between the two organi-
zations. Willi Laurie noted that. as
teachers and education workers, all
those present were very aware of
the hurt. shame and learning diffi-
culties.children suffer as a result of
abusive home situations. She com-
pared the effect of an abusive' envi-
ronment to a domino fan where one
child's experience expands to other
generations, to other people in his
or her environment, to other stu-
dents 'in his or per classroom. if
only one child can be helped by the
understanding of a caring teacher
or educational worker, or by the
funding that allows counselling to
take place. then that fanlike domino
effect' can also be arrested. to make
a huge difference in society.

Jinks and her partner Al Alderson,
silent, loonie and bidding auctions

by board administration.
In addition to• the funds raised by
the Huron Women Teachers in the
auctions, Florence Keillor, Second
Vice -President of the provincial or-
ganization: FWTAO, also present-
ed Michele Hansen with a cheque
for 5400.
Ms. Hansen took the opportunity
to announce two initiatives of
SWAN - a women's partnership
group in Huron. One fundraiser be-
ing planned was a ''Celebrating
Women Dinner" to be held in
Holmesville on May 10. Hansen
also announced the release of a new
compact disc, "Heartbeat". Record-
ed entirely in Huron County. this -is
a compilation of music by various
Huron County female artists. Cop-
ies of the CD will be sold at the
next Huron Women"Teachers'. As-
sociation banquet on May 29. .
The Huron Women Teachers'
Association also supports the Take
Back the Night March in Septem-
be r and the December 6 National
Day of Remembrance. The Federa-
tion of Women Teachers' Assi cia-
tion of Ontario, which represents
42,000 women teachers across the
province. is an organization highly
committed to the cause of women
and children.
