South Huron hosts Red and
Black soccer tournament
Called up to play at the
last minute, the junior
girls team win one
game in the senior girls
Red and Black soccer
tournament.
EXETER - The South Huron Dis-
trict High School senior girls soc-
cer team hosted their annual Red
and Black Tournament on Saturday
winning three games and tieing one
before bowing out in the semi-
finals.
The Panthers tied Catholic Cen-
tral 1-1 and shut -out East Elgin 2-0
and Montcalm 1-0.
In the opening game, they de-
feated the South Huron junior girls
team 2-0, which was asked to play.
in order -to fill-in for one of the 20
teams that couldn't make the tour-
nament.
After pool play the seniors found
themselves in the lead with 10
points. But two scoreless halves
and double overtime couldn't pro-
duce a winner so the contest went
to penalty kicks. South Huron end-
ed up on the short side of the deal
losing 3:1 and ending up third over-
all.
"We're really starting to work
well together," said player Sunny
Dinney. "The communication is
there and we're thinking as a
team."
The seniors are still undefeated in
conference play extending their
winning streak to four games afier
heating Scaforth 7-0,(onThursday
and F.E. Madill 4-0 two days be-
fore.
Helen Theophilopoulos and Lori
Richardson scored a pair of goals
each for the -Panthers against Wing -
ham and Helen recorded three more
against Scaforth. Cara Gardner
scored twice during that game
while Missy Hayter and Richardson
added singles in the high scoring
game.
The big story, however, was the.
surprising success of the junior
team in this tournament.
Kerr! Brownlee moves the ball within striking distance for
the Panthers during the• Red and Black senior girls soccer
tournament on Saturday.
Called in to play at the last min-
ute to replace an absent squad, the
juniors were mentally unprepared
to play, but the girls held their
own against the older more ex-
perienced teams losing a pair of
games by only two goals and bat-
tling East Elgin to a scoreless tie.
Despite the odds, they even beat
one of the teams shutting out
Montcalm 2-0 with. Arlene In-
lakhana and Kim MacLean notch-
ing goals for South Huron. Goal -
tender Anne -Marie Parsons
played aggressively in net to -pre-
serve her shutout.
"I was amazed at how they
played together. The passing was
great and they didn't back
down," said coach Rebecca Far-
quhar, adding she believes the
juniors played better because
there was no pressure on them to
win "Our goal for the tournament
was to work on our defence and
score one goal but we, did better
than that."
The junior girls soccer team are
currently 1-1-1 in conference
play. Both teams will see action
on • Tuesday, however, results
were not available by press time.

Fishing derby set
GRAND BEND - It worked
once, why not do it again?
When the Grand Bend Salmon
and Trout Derby Committee de-
layed last year's event due to a late
thaw on Lakc Huron, anglers
caught more fish than the year be-
fore..
But the delay • last year also
forced the derby to run at the same
time as nearby events and organiz-
ers wanted to avoid that this season
by keeping it near the same date.
That's why the 1997 Grand Bend
Salmon and Trout Derby is sched-
. uled to start beginning on May 23
and continuing to June 1 st.
Tim Steele. Derby Committee
chairperson, said he expects, the
fishing 'to be even better this year
because the water temperature will
he warnier and the fish more active.
Last ycar 650 tickets were sold
and anglers hooked more than 500
fish. Two local anglers won first
and third when Dwight Shepherd of
Dashwood reeled in a 21 32 pound
