Juvenile medalists
Exeter precision skating
teams compete in Fergus
The juveniles won bronze• and' the juniors placed fourth
FERGUS - The Exeter Precision Skating teams com-
peted among 20 teams at the Cupid Capers Central On-
tario Section Competition in Fergus on the weekend.
The Juvenile Mini -Classics won bronze while the
Junior Classics narrowly missed a medal placing
fourth:
Coach Kathy Memel- said the juvenile team had an
outstanding performance and placed first after their
opening skate with six points distancing them and the
second place team. • • • .
The achievement was remarkable considering they
were competing against teams fromiarger centres such
as Richmond Hill, Milton and Markham. However, the
girls made two errors in their second skate to finish
third overall.
"They were too _pumped up and they were over-
confident." said Merner adding the excitement of their
first skate may havc..distracted theta and affected.their
• concentration .duringiheir second performance.
"Those kids-ha.v.uever brought home- a medal- be-
fore and suddenly they were on top of 20.teams," she
said.
The juniors also- had a tremendous skate. however,
the judges didn't see it that way. Merner said in-,
consistent marks an the judging panel resulted in. a
fourth place finish. despite what ,may have •been the
team's best performance of the season.
"You could tell by the reaction of the crowd when
the scores where read-out," said Merner. •
However, they were not phased by the outcome.
"We didn't come home with a medal but our goal
was to perform as a team and .we felt we skated better
than any of our previous competitions," said Memer.
With two three more competitions left on their
schedule. Merner said both. teams will have another
chance to win a gold medal. something that has eluded
them so far this season.
"I'm confident they are capable of winning gold. It's
just a matter of them pulling it together for that four
minutes on the ice."
The precision tures will compete in Si. Thither on
March 1 and willbe in Waterloo on March 15'. "

his team to a 2-1 victory.° Nathan

Head coach Dave Revington isn't
surprised by the low scores adding
that Mitchell has played. them hard
- throughout the season.
"They have always played a close
checking and very aggressive hock-
ey game. It's important we play
disciplined...in one goal games pen-
alties can kill a team." he said.
The. Hawks have a 3-1-1 record

MacLean named
top defencernan
KITCHENER - Jeff MacLean of Exeter was honored with' the
Cory Stoyko.Trophy after he was picked as the top Midwestern Jun-
ior "13" defenceman at the annual league awards banquet in Listowel
last Monday. .
Playing for the Kitchener Dutchmen in his second season, MacL-
ean was fifth in the league..among defencemen in terms of scoring
with eight goals and 27 assists but it was his consistent defensive -
zone play and steady point production that helped the Dutchmen to a
third place finish.
"I was a. little surprised because 1 didn't produce the large num-
bers as some of the other• defencemen in the league but I thought 1
had a good chance," said MacLean, 17, adding he was up against 19
and 20 year=old veterans for the award,
MacLean was picked in last summer's Ontario Hockey League
draft by the Kitchener Rangers in the '12th round but, chose to play
Junior "B" this season to protect his U.S. college scholarship el-
igibility. He said receiving the award didn't change his mind about
his decision explaining he first hcard the news after returning from a
visit to Colgate University where he saw their varsity hockey team .
play Harvard and Brown University.
"It made me want to take the scholarship route even more," he
said.
Earlier this season MacLean was picked as a Midwestern all-star
player and scored a goal for the South Conference team. The Kitch-
ener
Dutchmen are currently engaged in a best of seven series with Lis-
towel for the opening round of the playoffs. Kitchener is leading the
best of seven series with a 7-3 win in the opening game.

"I'm coaching . one game at a

series." he said..

The competition at WOSSA will
be tough but Jacobi feels South Hu-

- "Our • biggest weakness is not
watching our opponents shoot. You

adding the team needs to work on
