EXETER - Thinking
of taking a winter's walk
down by the stream, to-
bogganing in your fa-
vourite river valley, or
building a snow fort
down by the river....think
again! Watercourses are
extremely dangerous.
Although rivers, creeks,
streams, and ditches
were safe to be near in
the summer, you must
be careful to stay away.
Watercourses are cur-
rently, filled with snow and ice
and create a variety of danger-
ous situations. Kristi Van--

servation Authority is per- . -
forming the Floodwater'Aware-
ness Program to local school
students in grade 4, 5, and 6. A
video, slides regarding local riv- •
ers, ice safety and rescue tech-
niques, warm. /cold water experi-
ments and activity sheets are
included in-anaction-packed
one hour program: In a con-
trolled setting, the students learn
about the dangers of being near
a lake, river or stream at this
time of, year. It ii dangerous to -
be playing nearra flooded water-

Waiting until the last minutemeans
more for men on Valentine's Day
Lt's 4:30 p.m. on Valentine's Day. Guess which gender of the
human species is waiting in line to buy their sweetheart a gift?
By Chris Skalkos
T -A Reporter • ,
EXETER - Every year men seem
to get a bad rap on Valentines Day.
On a day where both gedders -
stop to celebrate their love for one
another, a common fallacy seems to
exist that says it'snot uncommon
for women have their Valentine's
Day gifts wrapped up days - and
sometimes weeks - before, while
men always wait until the last min-
ute. - - ••
Coffee shop conversation on. this
day seems to revolve around a ster-
eotypical image of men fumbling
through unchartered territory shop-
ping for that special something : or •.
anything - for,their sweethearts. ,
' However, one only needs to peek
through the storefront windows of
local shopping outlets late in the af-
ternoon_ on February 14 to see there
-is more fact than fiction behind that
reputation. ' When asked why they waited for
the last minute most men are -quick
to.come up with justification -
"Shopping- at the spur of the mo-
ment is more exciting," said Gill
McLeod who claims there was
method in his procrastination.. "1.
like the challenge."
Others were a little mote honest.: .
"I do everything at the last min-
ute," said one middle-aged man.
who asked to remain anonymous.
"Shopping is .for the .birds any-
ways,"
ny-ways," he said trying to pick out a
card. -
It may be true, but can we believe
the many tall tales? -
There are stories of men guessing' -
at the kind of perfume their, wife
said they wanted after they wrote •
the brand name down on six differ-
ent pieces of paper, and of bus;
bands trying, to bribe the doorman
. of • a local restaurant, after being
,told there were' no more tables
' available, because they promised
their "significant other" they made
reservations days ago.
At least one young gentleman -
defied the tardy habits of the male
,species.
"1 had my . flowers ordered one
week ago," said. Mark Baker who
admits he got caught in the rush
last .year: "l don ;t like to wait in
line,"'
Matt Skirten said men are ca-
•pable of finding a gift that says "1
love -you" on Valentines Day. they
just like to take their time doing it.
"There's no rush," he said adding
when they finally find a gift it's
usually from the heart. With a bou-
quet of flowers in one hand and a
big white teddy bear in the other
Skirten.'was grinning from car -to -
'ear. "I can't wait to give this to my
girlfriend, she's going to melt:" •
