Community coaches sought for award
EXETER - There are far too many coaches throughout our com-
munity whose hard work and conscientious efforts go unnoticed. '
Every community seems to have a few of these special people.
They spend countless hours enhancing.the young athletes they coach
while presenting a positive image of sports and athletics.
Exeter and its surrounding community has a rich sporting history
and behind all the tradition are hours of unpaid dedication by local
coaches. -
To help recognize the daily contributions of people who coach in
our coverage area, the Times -Advocate is teaming up ((;Rh the •
Coaching Association of Canada and 3M in the Community Coach-
es Recognition Program. -
The program is designed to honor coaches who go beyond the call
of duty, and exemplify excellence in their coaching performance and
philosophies. There are many worthy candidates, all they need is for
your to nominate them.
A- nomination form appears in this issue of the Times -Advocate
and reminders will appear forthe next three issues. _They are also
available at the Times -Advocate at 424 Main Street Exeter. Nomina-
tions are due by March 30.
A selection committee will choose four outstanding candidates -af-
ter reviewing all nominees and select a male -coach winner and a
runner-up, as well as a female coach winner and a runner-up: They
will receive a formal certificate and a gold -tone lapel pin. Photos of
the recipients will appear in the Times -Advocate at a later date,
It may only be a small token of appreciation for these coaches, but
they deserve to be recognized for their support of sports in our area.
Coaches nominated can come from any sport played at any time of
the year, but they must reside in the area served by this newspaper
and must have coached at (east two years. Nominations will also be
accepted for coaches involved in non -mainstream sports.
Winners will be judged on the following standards:
- Demonstrates respect for officials, opponents and parents, while
using a philosophy of fair play.
- Believes in the all-around development of athletes, on and off the
playing field. - -
- Is an example of a positive image of coaching. -
- Has the desired ability .to improve the athletic performance of a
team or individuals.
- Applies relevant coaching techniques. -

Dave Shaw is ranked among
the top 100 defencemen in
the NHL according to the
ninth annual Toronto Sun's
NHL Talent Poll published in
its Sunday Issue.
The unofficial league posi-
tion -by -position standings
has placed Shaw as the 90th
top defender just behind Ja-
mie Macoun, Larry Murphy
and Dave Ellett of the Toronto
Maple Leafs.
Shaw, who Is a product of
the Exeter Minor Hockey sys-
tem, was drafted by the
Quebec Nordiques in 1982.
He played for the New York
Rangers for four years and for
the Edmonton Oilers and the
Minnesota North Stars before
being traded to the Boston
Bruins where he played for
three years until he was trad-
ed to Tampa Bay In 1995.
