Dear Santa
Hi! It's Megan again. How are you?
How are the elves, and Mrs. Claus
and the reindeer?
If it is possible can you have the
elves make for me a yak bak phone
for girls, and a polly pocket
mansion. And the last thing I would
like is a game called Operation. So I can be like my
mom and work! See you soon Santa, I know you are
very busy this time of the year. I love you.

My Letter to Santa
Claus
Dear Santa Claus;
I hope I have been a good girl.
Please get me one of my things that
I wrote for my Christmas list. I am
sorry for all the mistakes I made, I
hope you will forgive me. Are all
of your elves working for you? I
know some elves that would be
happy to be your elves for you if
you need some elves, tell me. My
phone number is 262-2407.
They are really not elves but I
think we are because we are mak-
ing snowflakes and in our class,
teacher calls us elves. I hope you
need some elves. If you are going
to phone me ask for Sherri Lyn
Moir. How is Dasher, Dancer,
Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid,
Doner and Blitzen. Are all of your
reindeers feeling great? And Ru-
dolph too. With the shiny red nose.
How can those elves make so many
presents? If you can't phone me
tell somebody else to phone me for
you.
From Sherri Lyn Moir
Future Christmas
By Maria Dinney, Grade 5
Exeter Public School
'Twas two weeks before Christ-
mas and at the North Pole, Santa
was running in his underwear, that
was too small. He was getting lots
of letters on his high-tech fax from
all over the world. Phones were
ringing off the hook and the super
power-internet was beeping like
heck. Mrs. Claus and her walkie-
talkie toque, were making double
hot chocolate on the 15000 high
power stove to make Santa fat.
The elves were making toys in
their new workshop, with chain -
saws and powerdnlls instead of
lowly old handsaws.
In the garage, the reindeer were
there making Santa's new sleigh,
with a hot chocolate machine, and a
candor cane maker, along with a
walkte-talkie in case there's a prob-
lem. Then in Santa's office, Mrs.
Claus walked in and said, Merry
Christmas sweety, I got you a
present." He opened it up and there
was a new pair of underwear.
He said, "Thank you" and gave
her a kiss. Two weeks later, Santa
went out and delivered his presents
in his new underwear.
Environmental benefits
of real Christmas trees
Air Quality and Pollution
Abatement
a) Trees provide oxygen, enough
for up to 18 people from an acre of
Christmas trees per year.
b) Trees use carbon dioxide in
photosynthesis.
c) Trees act as air pollution fil-
ters, and can remove up to 13 tons
of airborne pollutants per acre per
year.
d) Trees help trap dust and pol-
lens.
Water Quality
a) Trees provide purified water
into the air through transpiration.
b) Culdvated fields help filter our
fresh water supply.
Erosion and Flooding Control
a) Fields of Christmas trees help
stabilize soils.
b) The increased soil porosity
found in Christmas tree plantations
help fields act as large sponges, re-
ducing the chance of flooding dur-
ing heavy rainfalls.
c) A field of Christmas trees de-
lays snowmelt longer than does a
grassy field, thus reducing the risk
of spring flooding.
d) Windbreaks: Even low level
plantings act as windbreaks and re-
duce snow accumulations on roads.
Wildlife
a) Christmas tree farms are ha-
vens for a wide variety of bird and
mammal species including gros-
beaks, sparrows, chickadees, foxes,
coyotes, mice, voles, and squirrels.
The "edge effect" created by a
stand of Christmas trees next to a
woodlot or an open field is known
to increase wildlife species diversi-
ty.
Practical Use and Beautifica-
tion of Lands
a) Use of marginal lands: Many
Christmas tree farms were estab-
lished on shallow sandy soils and
other lands not suitable for agricul-
tural food crops. Christmas trees of-
ten occupy corners and odd parcels
of land inaccessible to farm equip -

b) Noise control: Trees reduce
and mute undesirable noises by
scattering sound waves.
c) Greenbelts: Christmas tree
farms provide pleasant green belts
where barren fields might other-
wise be present often close to urban
areas.
d) Aesthetics: Christmas tree
farms not only look beautiful, they
provide wonderful natural fragranc-
es and sounds.
Agricultural / Ecological
Benefits
a) Gene pool: Christmas tree
breeding and culture maintains and
enhances genetic diversity of the
tree species used, thus encouraging
natural pest resistance and benefi-
cial growth characteristics.
b) Planting: Christmas tree grow-
ers plant seedlings each year to re-
place the trees harvested. Even with
an annual harvest, ninety percent of
the farm remains in trees at all
times.
c) Leaf area: Christmas trees
have many more times the leaf area
per unit of land area than the grass-
es which they generally replace, al-
lowing them to be more effective at
providing environmental benefits.
d) Good use of growing stock: In
natural forests, only one seed in
one million has a chance to grow
into a tree. In intensively managed
Christmas tree farms, however,
seedling survival is almost 100%.
e) Agricultural practices: Other
benefits occur from the farming of
Christmas trees, such as soil im-
provement and reduction of nox-
ious weeds.
f) Forest resources: Christmas
trees are grown for a very specific
purpose. When buyers purchase
farm grown Christmas trees, they
know they are not harming natural-
ly occurring forest resources.
An Environmentally Friendly

they can be mulched and their chips

Conclusion
Natural farm grown Christmas
trees are a sustainable agricultural
crop grown specifically to help cel-
ebrate the Christmas season. Tree
farming provides innumerable ben-
efits to local communities, not only
economically, but also through en-
vironmental and ecological benefits
as well.
Real Christmas trees improve the
air we breathe, the water we drink
and the sights and sounds of the
world around us. They help to con-
trol the effects of climatic condi-
tions and provide a habitat for a va-
riety of birds and small animals.

Why Christmas Is
Special to Me
By Matthew Johns, Grade 3
Usborne Central
I like Christmas because when
you awake you smell the fresh aro-
ma of cookies floating up the stairs
and into your room. When you do
come downstairs you're greeted by
reds and greens and whites and it
makes you feel nice and warm in-
side. You look up and you're stand-
ing under the mistletoe and you get
a big kiss on the cheek. It makes
you feel so good inside. On Christ-
mas Eve you're so excited when
you finish the Advent calendar and
read the book The Night Before
Christmas' and drink eggnog.
When it's time to go to bed, holly
surrounds you. I can't help men-
tioning that you feel so nice and
warm inside. In the morning you
run down the stairs and open your
presents. There's your , favourite
things and you're so happy. You
get to play with them for awhile.
Then you go and see some rela-
tives. I just love Christmas, don't
you?
