haring Christmas with seniors
( By Chris Skalkos

• .McGILLIVRAY TOWNSHIP -
,ljearly 30 senior citizens attended
the Christmas celebrations at
McGillivray Public school on
'Thursday, but it was difficult to tell
who enjoyed the day more -the sen-
igrs or the students?
'The event was hosted by VON
HOMME, which provided a hot
al and the transportation, while
e school supplied the venue and
e entertainment.
Jackie Wells, manager of the
VON HOMME volunteer program,
said bringing the seniors to the
school gave them a chance to so-
cialize among themselves and with
the children.
"This kind of interaction is stim-
ulating for the seniors," said Wells
adding the students also benefited
from the visit. "The seniors love to
tell stories and many of the kids are
realizing how we can take things
for granted after hearing what
Christmas was like for these sen-
iors when they were children."
The visit also helped the students
dismiss myths they may have heard

about senior citizens and aging
while providing an environment
where they can learn how easy it is
to relate to someone who is much
older than they are.
"The children see that seniors are
fun and have a sense of humour.
Just by listening to them, they re-
alize they have so much history to
offer." said Wells.
More importantly, they learned
how a small amount of volunteer
work can go a long way for people
who rely on it.
Teacher, Drew Robertson said
this was the second year McGil
livray and VON HOMME teamed
up to bring the students and seniors
together. This year they held the
lunch in the library rather than the
gymnasium and the small and cozy
feel of the room provided an in-
timate environment.
After lunch the seniors enjoyed a
Christmas play put on by the pri-
mary students.
Eager to perform in front of a
crowd, the students fidgeted with
their costumes backstage while
practicing their lines. The young
performers were teeming with en-
ergy and all were excited about
conducting their dress -rehearsal in
front of a live audience.
Wells said for many of the sen-
iors the play would be the highlight
of their Christmas and more than
one senior was moved by the per-
formance.
"One of the seniors was so filled
iwith joy, she cried at the end of the
day," said Robertson.
