Times Advocate, 1996-12-18, Page 19Bruce Cornish, head coach for the Lucan Midgets found it
difficult to contain himself behind the bench as the action
heats up during a game against Thedford on Thursday.
Cornish had to bring up a number of bantam age players
to fill in the void left by injured players, but despite an all-
around team effort Lucan lost the close game 7-3 with
Thedford scoring their last point on an empty net. The Lu -
can Midgets are currently in fourth place in the Shamrock
league division standings.

kid after dropping their last two games
LUCAN - Andy Marshall
scored a hat trick for the Lu -
can Irish, but it wasn't enough
to prevent a devastating 8-3
defeat at the hands of Port
Stanley on Sunday.
Marshall scored two of his
goals on the powerplay in the
second period with assists
going to Bob Grant and Chad
Greenlee, and capped his
scoring drive in the third while
shorthanded with Greenlee
assisting again for his second
point of the night.
However, the good night
these two forwards were hav-
ing was not shared by the
rest of the team, especially
starting goaltender Matt Faw-
ceff who allowed four goals
after only 13 shots on net. He
was replaced by Nathan
Maudsley for the second and
third periods.
Lucan .vs Mitchell
The loss in Port Stanley
marks a five game losing skid
for the Irish after they
dropped a close 4-3 decision
to Mitchell at home last
Wednesday.
Lucan blew a two goal lead
when they allowed Port Stan-
ley to score twice in the third
period to tie the game. Scott
Thompson, Greenlee and
Grant scored for Lucan with
Roy Davis, Jamie Lightfoot, t'
Mike Bodner and Andy Mar-
shall notching assists. But,
with only 2:42 left in the over-
time period a Port Stanley de-
fenseman took a slap -shot
from the blueline that floated
through a crowd and lodged
the puck In the upper left
hand corner of the net to give
the visitors the sudden death
win.
"I thought it was a fiukie
goal but they all count," said
head coach George Pratt af-
ter the game.
The shots on net were near-
ly equal as both teams
seemed evenly matched, but
it was Mitchell's potent pow-
erplay that made the differ-
ence as they scored on three
powerplay opportunities.
"We played better than we
have in our last five
games...their powerplay hurt
us," said Pratt adding he was
missing a few key players
from the line-up due to in-
juries. "I don't mind losing
when we play well. Tonight
we ` played well enough to
win but we ended up on the
short end of the stick."
The win lifted Mitchell into
second place in the Morenz
division bumping . Lucan to
third, however, statistics have
no bearing on how Pratt runs
the bench and he continues
to remain optimistic.'
"It's (the Morenz division) is
so, tight thinkthe standings
are going to change a lot, be,
tween now and the end of
the season," he said. "We're
by no means ready to press
the panic button."
