Many Christmas parties held in Zurich area
Families are getting
together for their pre -
Christmas parties.

ZURICH - There are 1996 Hay
Days calendars available at the Hay
Township office.
Evangelical Lutheran Women
The Evangelical Lutheran Wom-
en met in the fellowship hall with
18 members present on the evening
of December 10.
The meaning of Advent both in
the home, and the church, was pre-
sented by December committee of
Margaret Deichert, Alice Thiel, and
Margaret Westlake. Assisting with
scripture reading was Phyllis
Deichert and Audrey Haberer was
at the piano for Christmas hymns.
The executive for 1997 will be
president Marilyn Heimrich, vice
president Donna Merner, secretary
Petra Aisenpreis, treasurer Mary
Walker Thiel and member Ann
Flaxbard.

The Women's Institute with pres-
ident Bridget Groot held their
Christmas meeting at the Town hall
on December 2, which was decorat-
ed for the occasion.
A meal was catered by Rini Erb,
followed by a gift exchange and
musical entertainment.
The Institute women also held the
December birthday party for the
residents of Blue Water Rest Home
in the afternoon of December 10.
Optimists
The Optimist Club members sang
Christmas carols at the Rest Home
on December 10 and served ginger-
bread and shortbread cookies.
Golden Ater
The Golden Agars with President
Phyllis Deichea bald their Christ-
mas dinner and meeting at the Ma-
ple Woods Apartments in the Com-
mon Room op December 9.

Many people enjoyed the slides
shown by Adrianna Tetley (nee
Van Raay), Toronto, of Bro. Bob's
recent 25th anniversary celebration
in India. The folk choir presented a
musical program under the direc-
tion of Theresa Van Raay. A total
of $750 from a freewill offering is
being sent to Bro. Bob Mittleholtz
in India for his work.
Winners
Cliff and Delores Gingerich won
the December cash draw of $500
through the Chamber of Com-
merce. The next draw is on January
4.
Bus trip
Members of the Lutheran Church
and others enjoyed a bus trip to
Frankenmuth, Michigan on Decem-
ber 8.

The '97 Lottery Cash Calendars
are available for $15 at Schilbe
Hardware. The draws start January

year.

Josephine Denomme returned re- .
cently from a three-week holiday
visiting with her son Stephen and
family in Abbotsford, B.C. for 10
days. She also visited in Calgary
with her son Fred and family for 10
days. Fred brought his mother
home and visited here for a few
days.

programs for Blue Water residents
ZURICH - The tenants of Maple -
woods Apartments enjoyed their
noon meal on Monday at Blue Wa-
ter Rest Home. Verda Baechler, Ila
O'Rourke, Vera Shantz, Helen and
Lloyd Otterbein, Meda O'Brien,
Anna Erb and Laura Gascho board-
ed the wheelchair bus with the as-
sistance of Josef Risi, Administra-
tor/driver. The residents always
enjoy a visit from their neighbours
and afterward enjoyed watching
"Anne of Avonlea" on the big
screen in the auditorium.
Monday evening the Lakeview
Conservative Mennonite church
members carolled at the home.
Brad Bender was chairperson for
his group and they sang "Silent
Night, Holy Night", "Joy to the
World" and "To Us a Child of
Hope is Born", just to name a few.
The Zurich Women's Institute
hosted the December resident birth-
day party in the auditorium on
Tuesday afternoon. Rose Brode-
rick, Dorothy Bapty and Clara
Hamilton received gifts from the
Blue Water Rest Home Auxiliary
in honor of their December birth-
days. Mary Waters read "The Story
of Christmas"; Ina Neeb read
"Christmas Wishes" and Pearl
Heimrick read "Christmas Letter"
for the residents. Hugh Harper, a
talented pianist from the Blue Wa-
ter Highway played many selec-
tions which included "We Wish
You a merry Christmas". Everyone
enjoyed socializing and refresh-
ments following the program.
In the evening the Zurich and
District Optimists visited the Home
with Chairperson Diane Wilds and
musician Mozart Gelinas, Sr. for an
evening of Christmas music. Local
groups, Brownies, Scouts, Sparks,
Cubs, under the direction of Ruth
Zehr, Nicole Veroude; Hub Thiel,
Lee Desjardine, Francis Hartman
and Tim Dietrich entertained the
residents. About 45 youth in all en-
tertained and served hot chocolate
and gingerbread cookies to the resi-
dents. , z! -
Rev. Robert Putman, Grand Bend
United Church, with the assistance
of organist Beatrice Rader, con-
ducted Thursday afternoon chapel
service with the theme of the Ad-
vent - The Inn Keeper. Fr. Matthias
Wronski, St. Boniface Church, Zu-
rich celebrated Mass.
Thursday evening the residents
enjoyed a drive into the country, to
look at Christmas lights in Zurich
and Bayfield with the assistance of
Jim Purvis, volunteer driver; Cathy
Shantz, Adjuvant; and Meagan Rat-
cliffe, student volunteer. Residents
Esther Makins, Clara Hamilton,
Kurt Gebel, Connie Graham, Doro-
thy Dietrich Rose Merrier, Beulah
Desjardine, $arence Gascho, Bob

old familiar places dressed in the
best of the festive season.
Friday afternoon the Grand Cove
Community Singers visited the
Home and entertained the residents
with a wide selection of Christmas
song under the direction of Anne
Didier and pianist Marjorie Pol-
lock. Didier sang "The Greatest
Gift of All"; Mel Norton sang
"White Christmas" and Kathleen
Maggs sang "You're All I Want for
Christmas." The residents enjoyed
"Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Pretty
Paper" and "Rockin Around the
Christmas Tree", to name a few of
the many selections sung.
The residents look forward to the
Christian Reformed Church mem-
bers December 17 and Max Du-
charme and the "Townliners" on
December 19 and on December 20
the Barber and Zurich Public
School carolling.
