Hawks and Irish clash inseeaawbattks
After losing their first game of the season to Lucan, the Exeter Hawks returned the favour with a 7-4 win

LUCAN - It took a full 60 min-
utes of hockey to decide a winner
when the Lucan Irish hosted th ,Ex-
eter Hawks on Saturday night; but
after engaging in a seesaw battle for
the first two periods, Exeter rallied
in the third frame to pull ahead of
Lucan and win 7-4.
This was the second encounter be-
tween the two teams which met ear-
lier in November. The Irish took the
first game 6-5 after the Hawks ran
into penalty troubles
and the Irish capital-
ized scoring five
powerplay goals.
The Junior "D"
feature match -up on
Saturday was a close
and entertaining
game marked by
tough physical play,
goal -mouth scram-
bles and bouts of
end-to-end action.
Lucan jumped to an early start
testing Exeter goalie Robb Mac-
Donald who was making his debut
with the Hawks. The Irish drew first
blood two minutes into the contest
when Greg Henderson picked up a
rebound and backhanded the puck
past an outstretched MacDonald
who made the initial save. Andrew
Stratton and Chad Greenlee picked
up the assists.
Lucan scored again three minutes
later on the powerplay when Scott
Thompson took a pass from Bob
Grant and Jeremy Lambourne and
broke in on the right wing shuffling
the puck past MacDonald for Lu -
can's second goal.
Facing an early two -goal deficit
the Hawks regrouped and replied
with a goal of their awn when Seth
1vieCann passed theipuckfilto Natttap:'
t><rrts' ioised in char slot. Burnt beat
Lucan goalie Matt Fawcett for the
powerplay goal. Exeter struck again
on the powerplay moments later
when Jeff Glavin tipped a slap shot
from Chris McDonald to tie the
game midway through first period.
With the teams tied at two and at
even strength Exeter coughed up
the puck deep within its own zone
and Irish forward Daryl Boshart
took the gift and buried the puck
high to give the Irish the lead again.
However, the blunder didn't take
the steam out of Exeter as defens-
man Bill Hodge broke up an Irish
two on one and turned the play
around. Ryan Chamney tagged
Burns with a long pass who skated
in beating the Lucan netminder
with a side-to-side deke for his sec -

and goal of the night.
First period action con-
tinued with solid goal-
tending on both ends of
the rink while players
took turns ringing shots
off the post, but the action
packed frame ended tied
at three.
Going into the second
period both teams began
to take on penalties with
the Hawks getting the worst of it.
However, Exeter surprised Lucan
with a shorthanded goal after
McDonald took a pass from Glavin
and beat Fawcett on the short side.
Lucan bounced back with a pow-
erplay goal as Thompson scored his
second of the night with a well
placed wrist shot. He was assisted
by Steve Hudson and Grant.
Tied again, the end-to-end action
continued until Glavin took a pass
from Craig Corriveau, fended off a
check and snapped a pass out from
behind the Lucan net. Defenseman
Ben McCann one -timed it with a
blistering slap -shot giving Exeter
the 5-4 lead with only five seconds
left in the period.
Despite trading an equal amount
of shots in the third Lucan couldn't,
pttt another one up on the score -
boat , but the Hawks added to theist
lead when bi've" Fargiitar beat
Fawcett with a shot from just inside
the blueline. Glavin and McCann
recorded assists on the play. Far-
quhar gave Exeter its insurance
goal two minutes later when he
stole the puck and scored on the
breakaway notching his second goal
of the night.
Despite winning 7-4 Exeter coach
Dave Revington said it was a close
contest with the Hawks almost giv-
ing up the game in the first period.
"We came out flat and played
without emotion," said Revington.
"They outplayed us for the first half
of the game and I thought they were
going to run away with it."
Penalties were a contributing fac-
tor in Exeter's first loss to Lucan
earlier last month and Revington
said the same thing almost hap-
pened again when they suffered a
breakdown in discipline in the sec-
ond period. However, the Hawks
special teams played well and their
defense was the key to winning the
game especially in the third period.
"We wanted to play some good
defensive hockey and we did that in
the last half," he said.
Lucan coach George Pratt knew
breaking down Exeter's defense
was the key to winning the game.
"We wanted to key in on their de-
fense because we knew that was
their weak point," said Pratt. But he
wasn't able to accomplish that
missing three of his top forwards
from the line-up. The inability to
score and a couple of defensive
mistakes proved to be Lucan's
downfall as the game was ultimate-
ly decided in the last twenty min-
utes.
"We coughed up the puck a little
more than we liked but I credit Ex-
eter for playing better than we did,"
said Pratt. "We started off good but
Exeter played a full 60 minutes and
we didn't."
Exeter vs North Middlesex
The Hawks entered the . Lucan
pine coming off a close 5-4 win
over the North Middlesex Star's its
Exeter on Friday night. The last
time these two teams met Exeter
ended up on the short end of a wild
penalty infested 10-8 shootout in
Parkhill. However, the game was a
Junior "D" battle. Hawk defensman Ben McCann makes a pass while falling to the ground
as Lucan forward George Stephens, far left, pursues the puck. The Exeter Hawks beat the
Lucan Irish 7-4 during their second encounter of the season on Saturday night. Both teams
have won a game and are scheduled to play each other three more times during the regular
season.
lot tamer this time around with
only a handful of penalties being
called throughout the game.
Dan Taylor led the Hawks with a
pair of goals notching one in the
first and the other in the second pe-
riod off assists from Burns, Glavin,
Corriveau, and McDonald.
Jason Rutledge and Burns added
two afore and Brody Cochlgn
scored the winning goal at 6: in
the third period. Chad Gilflian,
Mike Bowerman and Rutledge
teamed up for the assists. North
Middlesex threatened to come back
scoring two quick goals with the
extra attacker in the dieing minutes
of the game, but Exeter goalie Dar-
ren Kints kept his team in the game
by preserving the lead with some
solid goaltending.
Exeter vs Thamesford
After playing two back-to-back
gruelling games against North Mid-
dlesex on.id8 and Lucan on Sat-
urday, the weary Hawks hit : the
road to take on the Thamesford
Trojans on Sunday emerging with
a tie.
Chris Kennedy took a pass from
Sean McCann to score Exeter's
first goal in the first period and
Chamney scored a pair in the sec-
ond with both assists going to
Burns.
The 3-3 tie was Exeter's first of
the season and they are now 15-2-
1. Exeter has slipped from first
place in the Junior "D" league
standings to second only one point
behind Mount Brydges which is
currently 16-1-1.
The Hawks will see action again
when they host Port Stanley on Fri-
day night at the South Huron Rec-
reation Centre.

Lincolns lose In Exeter
EXETER - The St. Marys Lincolns made a rare appearance in Ex-
eter on Saturday as they took on the Petrolia Jets in a regular Junior
"B" league game held at the South Huron Recreation Centre on Sat-
urday.
St Marys lost to Petrolia, the first place team in the league, 5-3.
The event was sponsored by the Rec Centre and was organized in
conjunction with Youth Awareness Week.
Lynne Farquhar. Recreation Director said the turnout was poor
due to the Junior "D" game between the Exeter Hawks and the Lu -
can Irish taking place on the same night in Lucan, however, those on
hand wit a fast and exciting hockey game.
Panthers compete in South
Huron Optimist tournament
An inexperienced
senior basketball
team will face a
challenging season
EXETER - Despite losing all
three games during the South Hu-
ron Optimist Basketball Tourna-
ment over the weekend, coach Ter-
ry O'Rourke said he was still
pleased with the effort coming
from his players.
The South Huron senior bas-
ketball team lost their first game to
an aggressive team from North
Middlesex 33-57 on Friday night;
however, they rebounded with a
strong game in the consolation
round the next day losing to Mont -
calm by a close score of 56-58.
"We lost by two points to the
team that won the consolation
championship. We had our chances
to win that game," said O'Rourke.
The Panthers lost their third game
31-43 to College Avenue with Jer-
emy Van Esbroeck netting 10
points. Daryl Romphf led with 18
points against Montcalm and Luke
Sims put the ball up for 12.
With five of last year's top point
gc iters missing from the line-up the
Panthers, lack a scoring punch, but
, O'Rourke said tournaments such as
this will give them the experience
they need to help them get to the
net.
"We're having trouble scoring
due to inexperience hut that will
improve."
The South Huron midget, junior
and senior boys teams will all play
an exhibition game against St Mar-
ys on Thursday in Exeter. On Fri-
day and Saturday the junior boys
will participate in a tournament and
the senior boys will compete in a
tournament held in Seaforth on Sat-
ur y.
The senior team seemed dwarfed
by some of the taller players on
other teams during the Optimist
tournament but O'Rourke said his
team's average height should not
have a bearing on how they play
adding they can beat taller teams by
playing more aggressively.
"It's not how tall you are it's how
big you play," he said.
