Local dancers celebrate the festival of dance at Althouse By Chris Skalkos T -A Reporter LONDON - The Exeter Dance Club participated in the British As- sociation of Teachers of Dance third annual festival last weekend with 30 dancers bringing home 62 medals. More than 250 dancers from Southwestern Ontario and Mich- igan graced the stage at Althouse College in London. A wide variety of dance from tap, jazz, ballet, cab- aret, modern, acrobatic, and high- land was displayed during the two day event that featured dancers ranging in age from four to 50. The Exeter Dance Club earned 36 gold, 34 silver and two bronze medals as well as the trophy for the highest overall mark in cabaret. Club teachers Sheree Trottier, Pam Cavaliere and Donna Brus-Carter say the young dancers also brought home new techniques and dance steps. The festival was adjudicated by Susan Messmer and Mavis Heath, two well known examiners with many prestigious titles and their feedback on the dancer's per- formance was a tremendous help. "We reviewed their comments with the students and used it as an opportunity to learn," said Brus- Carter. Although the festival was a com- petition, Brus-Carter said it was more like a celebration of dance and a chance to assess one's own performance. "The dancers were judged on their own performance. It didn't matter if the number that just got off stage had more difficult steps. This way they were able to have fun and enjoy what others were do- ing as well," she added. The Exeter Dance Club is a two- year-old non-profit organization that studies all forms of dance in- cluding acrobatics, tap and jazz. The 30 young dancers involved with the club are from Exeter, Cre- diton, Dashwood and Mitchell and. range from eight and 14 -years -old., 474 40 HURON TRACTOR TO YLAND 410h It cost $700 for each school to par- ticipate in the festival and Brus- Carter said the dancers came up with the entry fee by holding vari- ous fundraisers such as bake sales, chocolate bar sales and barbecues. She also credits the Exeter Legion, the Lions Club and the Optimists for their donations and praised the dancers' parents for supporting them on and off the dance floor. "They were either car pooling or flipping burgers at a fundraiser. They were willing to do anything to support their children," she said. "And with all these things working together we're able to run a smooth club." driStErtella Wish. 41114 111 fr Visit Huron Tractor Toyland....the BEST SELECTION of Toys Around # JOHN DEERE 1 1 1 eViyi Dnt drio Tender Operation of Provincial Parks Ontario Parks invites sealed tenders for day to day operation of Cralghielth Provincial Park, Sauble Falls Provincial Park, and Point Farms Provincial Park.
