Exeter Minor Hockey association will
host Sth annual Bill Batten Tournament
By Chris Slcalltos
T -A Reporter
EXETER - More than 2,000
hockey players, coaches and par-
ents will flock to Exeter this week-
end to participate in the Bill Batten
Memorial Tournament.
The annual minor hockey tourna-
ment was created eight years ago to
give local hockey clubs a chance to
play teams from across the prov-
ince.
Roger Dougall, president of Exet-
er Minor Hockey said the tourna-
ment is the highlight of the year for
the travel teams as Exeter will host
some of the best teams from On-
tario.
Forty teams will play 50 games
in just three days at the South Hu -
Carpet bowling

ron Recreation Centre with the
cooperation of Stephen Township
and Hensall arenas.
"The tournament was set up so
every age level in our system gets a
chance to play in a major tourna-
ment at home," said Dougall add-
ing the additional entry teams will
also host a tournament in De-
cember.
In the past, only Novice, Atom
and Peewee teams were included,
however last year the organization
expanded the tournament to include
Bantams and Midgets and so will
this year's event.
The Bantams and Midgets will
play at the Hensall arena organized
by Gold Pryde, Steve Desjardine
and Don Richardson.
With two All -Ontario teams and
soma midget teams from 'BB" cen-
tres participating, Richardson said
the Exeter Midgets will face some
fierce competition and guaranteed
the competition will provide fans
with some entertaining hockey.
The Batten tournament, named
after the late Bill Batten who was a
strong supporter of minor hockey
in the community for many years,
has become popular among hockey
centres with many teams returning
year after year.
"It will be a good experience for
our teams. The kids seem to step up
their effort and play a little better
when they come up against a higher
level of competition in a big tourna-
ment like this one," said Dougall.
