EXETER - The Exeter Hawks
had their wrists slapped by the Lu -
can Irish last week.
Lucan beat Exeter 6-5 at the
South Huron Recreation Centre on
Friday night putting an abrupt halt
to Exeter's eight game undefeated
streak.
It was the first of four encounters
scheduled between the two long-
time rivals who are neck -in -neck
for first place in the Morenz divi-
sion standings, separated by only
one point.
Five consecutive penalties called
against the Hawks early in the first
period proved to be their downfall
as Lucan capitalized on three of
them and continued to perform well
when given the man advantage,
scoring five of their six goals on
powerplays.
Steve Hudson, Scott Thompson
and Mike Robb pulled Lucan's spe-
cial teams together scoring three
goals in the first period. Despite be-
ing outshot 13-6, Exeter managed
to find the back of the net twice
cutting Lucan's lead to one point
going into the second frame.
Both teams traded a pair of goals
in the second period and the Hawks
actually went up by a goal for a
brief period with goals from Dan
Taylor and Bill Hodge, but Lucan
replied with Hudson scoring his
second of the game and Rob Silver
adding one more to re-establish the
lead.
Lucan's sixth goal three minutes
into the third period seemed to put
the game out of reach, but Taylor's
scored his second goal of the game
on a powerplay bringing the Hawks
within one.
With only six seconds showing
ives Exeter first loss of season
on the clock, Exeter tried one last
ditched effort to tie the game but
they couldn't convert the face-off
into a game saving goal as Lucan
handed Exeter it's first loss of the
season.
Lucan's bench erupted as the fi-
nal buzzer sounded and the mood
in the dressing room was just as ju-
bilant as the players celebrated
their victory.
Head coach George Pratt said it
was still too early in the season to
get excited about beating Exeter,
but the win inspired the players
who were already pumped up going
into the game. Lucan got a motiva-
tional boost last Wednesday when
they beat Thamesford, the first
place team in the Thomas division,
5-3. Their win against Exeter has
firmly established Lucan as the
team to beat in the Junior "D"
league.
"The win tonight keeps us in the
running with Exeter," said Pratt
who credited the entire team for a
solid effort.
Despite missing his top right
winger and mixing lines up at the
last minute, Lucan's strategy of
keeping the puck deep in their op-
ponent's zone while forechecking
hard paid off for the feisty Irish
who outshot Exeter 37-23 keeping
the Hawks off balance for most of
the game.
"They just outplayed us...the best
team won out there," said Hawks
head coach Dave Revington com-
plimenting Lucan on their win.
However, Revington admitted the
five consecutive minor penalties
awarded to Exeter by referee Joe
Celestine made it difficult for the
Hawks to gather any momentum.
"That really (messes) up your
bench. Your penalty killers are get-
ting tired while the rest of the

In the key
Sarah McAllister moves the ball in the key for the South
Huron senior girls basketball team. Despite coming back
from a 10 point deficit at the end of the first quarter, the
Panthers lost a close game to Seaforth 31-26. Stephanie
Pearson netted 10 points followed by Peggy Brownlee
who scored five. There WIN be a midget girls basketball

senior conference semi-finals are scheduled for Nov. 8.

South Hu.'n
hockey team ousted
from OFSAA playoffs
ST. CATHARINES - Despite an emotional and hard
fought battle the South Huron District High School lost
their bid for an All -Ontario championship at the OFSAA
tournament in St. Catharines on Friday.
After clinching their 10th consecutive WOSSA cham-
pionship on Oct. 25, the Panthers ended their season at
the provincial playoffs with two, losses and one win.
Their firdt game in pool play proved to be the stumbling
block for South Huron' as they lost to the host team, Rid-
ley College 5-1.
Their only goal came from Shawna Rowe who scored
early to give the Panthers the lead, however, Ridley tied
It in the first half and finished the scoring in the second.
The Panthers rebounded in the second game with a 7-0
victory over Parry sound with goals coming from Shawna
Rowe, Cara Gardner and Lori Richardson scoring a pair
each and o single from Toni DeJong.
This set the stage for their game Friday morning against
St. Plus X from Oftawa. South Huron needed to win by
two points but the Ottawa team had done their home-
work and kept the Panthers off the scoreboard beating
South Huron 1-0.
Coach Jim Workman said it was a disappointing tour-
nament for the girls who had competed with many of the
same teams earlier in the season with better results.
"I thought they took the loss with class," said Workman.
"They played well and deserve a lot of credit for the ef-
fort. I'm proud of them."
The team will lose graduating players Cara Gardner
and Toni DoJong but workman said the rest of the t
is already looking forward to next year's challen • e.
couldn't fully recover.
"We were never in the game. To
beat a team like Lucan you have to
play a full 60 minute game," said
assistant coach Jeff Dalrymple.
"It's tough to lose one in your own
division but hopefully we'll learn
from it."
Exeter vs, Seaforth
The Hawks almost suffered the
same fate on Sunday in Seaforth
when the same referee handed Ex-
eter six minor penalties giving Sea -
forth the man advantage for most of
the first period. But this time Exet-
er's powerplay killing unit, backed
up by goalie Darren Kints, pulled
through keeping their opponents off
the board for the full 20 minutes.
Jason Rutledge scored Exeter's
first goal and Joe MacDonald,
Chris McDonald and Greg Good-
win followed with one goal each in
the second. An empty net goal by
John Collins put it away for Exeter
as they went on to win 5-3.
Exeter is in the midst of a five
day break and will take their 9-1
win/loss record on the road this
weekend for two back-to-back road
games, one on Saturday in Mitchell
and the other in Lambeth on Sun-
day.
Lucan vs, Langton
Hot off their biggest win of the
season, the Irish carried their win-
ning streak into Langton on Sunday
and emerged with two points in the
win column defeating the Thun-
derbirds 5-2.
Josh Appleman scored twice for
Lucan with teammates Andy Mar-
shall, Scott Thompson and Greg
Henderson rounding out the score.
Lucan is now 8-2-1, second place
in the Morenz division only one
point behind the Hawks who are in
a first place tie with Thamesford
and Mount Brydges with 18 points.
Local soccer player returns
from Jamaican tournament
EXETER - Marty deBruyn, a lo-
cal soccer player and South Huron
District High School graduate has
just returned from competing in an
international exhibition soccer tour-
nament in Jamaica.
DeBruyn plays for London City
in the CNSL (Canadian National
Soccer League) and he was among
the few players cho-
sen from the league
to represent Canada
during an All-Star
game hosted by the
carribean island
against teams com-
prised of the Ja-
maican National
team.
The CNSL All -
Stars tied two and
lost one of their
three games. While
there, deBruyn re-
ceived some sur-
prising news when
he was informed by
his coach that his
team selected him as Rookie of the
Year back in Canada.
Upon his return, deBruyn jumped
right off the plane and back on to a
soccer field playing with his varsity
team, Fanshawe College.
Fanshawe, a major underdog in
the varsity soccer circuit, had won
their semi-final game in deBruyn's
absence earning a berth in the All -
Ontario finals in Hamilton on Sat-
urday.
DeBruyn returned just in time to
join his team for the final game
against Durham. After battling to a
1-1 tie the game was decided by
penalty kicks with Fanshawe com-
ing out on top 2-1 clinching the
provincial championship.
Debruyn said playing under a
scorching sun in
above 30 degree
celsius weather one
day, and then play-
ing on a snow cov-
ered field in sub-
zero temperatures
the next day was a
memorable ex-
perience. The cal-
ibre of soccer
among the Jamaican
teams is very high
and deBruyn feels
the experience he
gained helped him
in the provincial
playoffs with Fan-
shawe.
"In Jamaica I played against
some amazing soccer players and
when you get back (to a college
skill level) things seemed to go a
lot smoother," he said.
DeHruyn's travels are not over
yet as he will join Fanshawe in the
Canadian College Soccer Cham-
pionships held at Royal Military
College in Kingston next week.
