Congregations working together
"And now after four years we are
more than just members of four
different churches..."
Dear Editor:
It's our birthday!
Yes, it is now four years ago that we started to
broadcast the worship services of the four churches;
the Christian Reformed Church, the Pentecostal
Tabernacle, the Bible Fellowship, and the Baptist
Church, on your community channel.
We have been blessed throughout these four
years, and we want to share it with all of you.
We feel a few thank you's are in order.
We want to thank Ex cen Cable TV for allowing
us to use their facilities to bring the word of God
right into your living room.
We want to thank the Times Advocate for pub-
lishing the broadcast schedule.
We want to thank you, the viewer, for allowing us
to grow, despite some not so goad productions.
Now it is time to look ahead, and with God's
help, to continue to bring the message of salvation
to all who want to hear it.
We're looking forward to serving you better with
improved equipment and with four years of experi-
ence behind us, it can only be better.
As I am sitting behind my desk, writing this letter,
it dawned on me that these four years have been a
school for us, a school in which we learned the tech-
nical part of this ministry, and a school in which we
experienced the blessing that comes when people of
four churches of four different denominations have
learned to work together.
And now after four years we are more than just
members of four different churches, we have grown
into a group of people that love and respect each
other.
Yes, I really believe, the Lord has worked in us a
wonderful truth, the truth of His love in this minis-
try which we call the "Eternal Life Video Ministry".
Yes, I'll gladly blow out the four candles on our
birthday cake.
Yours truly,
Harold Devries
P.S. If you wish to congratulate us, you may call
any one of the four churches.

Frances Ryan of the Diocesan Jus-
tice Office opened the three work-
shops and outlined some of the cur-
rent social teachings of the church.
She reviewed the current work-
fare legislation and the plight of the
poor. This was particularly topical
because of the current statement
from the Canadian Catholic Bishop
delivered in Halifax on October 27
entitled "Struggle against Poverty,
a Sing of Hope for our World". As
Father Mark Poulin, our Spiritual
Advisor stated, "This will offer us
an opportunity to explore an area of
our spirituality that is rich in depth
and meaning. Unfortunately, it is
an area of our faith that still causes
a great deal of confusion and con-
flict. Nonetheless, the call to the
path of justice is clear both from
Christ and His Church."
The President of the League Mu-
riel Murphy introduced her
"C.W.L. Quilt" a Newsletter intro-
duced by herself and the spiritual
Advisor of the League Father Mark
Poulin of Clinton. The following is
taken form the Newsletter.
"Because there are many of us,
we contribute to the beautiful
patchwork of our league. We work
together, threading our lives to-
gether as we work for the love of
God and our parishes. One patch at
a time, we weave the fabric of our
quilt with compassion, understand-
ing, patience and tolerance."
It is intended that the Newsletter
will be sent to every Parish in the
Diocese so that the Parishes in the
Diocese will be kept informed
about our activities.
The next fall regional meeting
and date will be: Sarnia Wednes-
day, November 6, St. Benedict's
Sarnia. London, Saturday, Novem-
ber 9, St. Martin of Tours, London.
Spruce plantation thinning in Hay Swamp
EXETER - Penguin Pole of Elmi-
ra won the tender for the thinning
of 105 acres of 30 -year-old spruce
plantations in Hay Township. Some
White Pittes.jf *9. ,Wit4i9 S PAW,
cations.
Every fourth row will be thinned
with the products being used for
pressure -treated lumber. The trees
are four to 20 inches in diameter.
This is the first thinning of these
plantations and will allow more
sunlight to reach the remaining
trees, thus improving their growth
rate. Sunlight that reaches the forest
floor will also improve conditions
for deciduous seeds that are trans-
ported into the forest by wind and
wildlife.
Revenue from the sale of the tim-
ber will go towards paying down
the agreement Forest dept.
At the turn of the century Hay
Swamp supported a viable timber
industry and hopefully this can oc-
cur again in the future.
Hay Swamp is an important habi-
tat for wildlife and insects, but now
that the insect season is over more
people are going back to Hay
Swamp for recreation. Hunting is
allowed on the ABCA properties in
Hay Swamp, you can receive a amp
from the Authority that shows all
the Authority properties where
hunting is allowed. Snowmobiling
is also a popular winter activity,
and Pine Ridge Snowmobile Club
grooms trails on private public
property. The ABCA encourages
people to buy trail passes from the
Club so they can continue doing a
-wgood job on the trails.
Trail maps of Hay Swam't
available from the ABCA office
by contacting us by phone at 235-
2610.
Hay Swamp used to be about
10,000 acres in size, it is now
about 5,000 acres in size. ABCA
has been purchasing land in Hay
Swamp for the past 45 years. These
are managed by the Ministry of
Natural Resources for timber pro-
duction. With a reduction in the
amount of activity of the MNR and
the ABCA is now doing work on
managing these forests. Most of the
2500 acres has been reforested and
are called Agreement Forests.
The ARCA is interested in own-
ing land in Hay Swamp because
the flood control functions that the
swamp performs. Flood water can
enter the swamp and then spread
out throughout the swamp. Snow is
also retained in the wooded areas
in the spring and this evens out the
flood waters. This reduces the
flooding in downstream areas.
Hay SO/amp is appreciated by
many local residents for its wildlife
and scenic beauty. It is an impor-
tant part of the Ausable River and
Parkhill Creek watersheds.
