10 YEARS AGO
November 5, 1986 - A banquet was held in Varna Wednesday to
celebrate 75 years of the Family and Children's Services of Huron
County. Cutting the cake were president Audrey Royal, former ex-
ecutive director Clare McGowan and present director John Penn.
A decision could be made later this month whether Protective
Plastics will be moving its Huron Park and St. Marys operations to a
new location in Brantford.
The Kinette Club of Hensall and district held their 30th anniver-
sary banquet Wednesday at the Hensall Community Centre. In atten-
dance were six charter members including the first president Marg
Knight.
The South Huron Panthers won the Huron -Perth senior football
championship Saturday by defeating the Goderich Vikings 15-0.
This was revenge for an earlier 8-0 loss to the Goderich team.
Coach Ron Bogart credited super play by the defence as the reason
for the big upset victory.
25 YEARS AGO
November 4, 1971 - All accidents of the week investigated by the
Exeter police department occurred within a distance of 80 yards of
each other and within a 17 hour period. The four mishaps took place
between the intersection of Main and James Streets and the souther-
ly end of the Snell Bros. new car sales lot.
A number of incidents were reported on Halloween night. George
Kellett, R.R. 3, Exeter had a candle and an egg put into his gas tank
and, some obscenities scrawled on a shed. Five area juveniles were
apprehended and cleaned up the mess. Seven windows were broken
in a new house in Hensall. Railway flashers were also activated in
Hensall.
35 YEARS AGO
November 6, 1961 - William Cann, R.R. 1, Hensall has been
named chairman of the board of directors or the Exeter Curling Club
Limited.
Mrs. William Cutting, oldest bowler in the ladies' league estab-
lished a new high single for the league this week. She rolled a nifty
346 to easily outdistance the previous mark of 320.
40 YEARS AGO
November 4, 1956 - At the Sunday service at James Street United
Church, Mrs. M.C. Fletcher and her Sunday School class, "Learners
of God" provided the program which took the form of a Bible Quiz.
What is believed to be a record yield for white beans was recorded
this month by John Berendsen and his son Peter of R.R. 1, Kirkton,
who harvested an average of of 46 bushels to the acre in a 10 acre
field. A Hensall bean dealer said this is a "once in lifetime" harvest.
Friends and neighbours gathered Saturday evening for a farewell
party for Mr. and Mrs. Doug Smith. The Smiths left for Ridgetown
this week where Doug will take up his duties of recreation director
and arena manager.
Lack of accommodation and a shortage of nurses were cited by
the South Huron Hospital Association as major reasons for its deci-
sion to postpone the addition of major surgery facilities to the local
institution.
50 YEARS AGO
November 5, 1946 - Halloween was well observed in Exeter.
Soaping of windows was about the chief offence although a couple
of small buildings adorned Main Street the morning after.
Mr. Frank Taylor's horse, Midnight Express was entered in the
2.22 pace for a purse of $400 at Dufferin Park, Monday. Midnight
Express finished 12th, first and second in three heats.
75 YEARS AGO
November 6, 1921 - A big crowd attended the Elimville Church
fowl supper on Monday night. The musical program was given by
the James Street choir from Exeter assisted by Mr. W.R. Rennie and
Mr. Goodwin, also of Exeter.
A shooting match was given by Thomas Routieron his farm lo-
cated on London Road South on Monday. Mr. Fred Hunkin acted as
referee and sides were chosen by Mr. John Hunkin and Mr. Thomas
Routley.
Following are the scores: John Hunkin 8, Fred Kerr 10, L. Johns
5, A. Hackney 7, J. Stanlake 4, for a total of 41. Thomas Routley 6,
A. Steele 9, Wilfred Johns 2, Jackson Woods 3, T. Heywood 5, G.
Flynn 5 and C. Weir 6 for a total of 36.
100 YEARS AGO
November 5, 1896 - Mr. R. Armitage, agent for Massey Harris ag-
ricultural implements in Lucan has been appointed general agent at
a respectable increase in salary.
At the last sitting of the Crediton Division Court, the case of Barry
versus Haist and Wuerth, a dispute over the, weight of flax was tried.
The judge reserved a decision.

Home Tour features local talent
GRAND BEND - A little snow-
fall in some parts of the region last
weekend helped get people Into the
holiday spirit, just in time for the
Country Christmas Home tour that
runs November 9 and 10.
The tour is an annual fundraiser
for the Lambton Heritage Museum
and features six homes located in
the shoreline recreational sub-
divisions of Huron Woods, South-
cott Pines, Van Dongen and Oak-
wood Park.
One of the homes on the tour was
decorated by Louise's Unique In-
teriors of Exeter. Flower arrange-
ments for this home are created by
Bobbi Regier, the owner of The
Flower Shop, (formerly Huron
Ridge) in Zurich.
Although Regier won't say much
about her plans for the Oke home
she will focus on natural elements
that complement the homes wood-
ed surroundings.
The tour offers a range of house
sizes, ages, and holiday decorating
ideas. to suit any budget. All of the
homes on the tour are fully decked -
out for the holidays with Christmas
finery, flowers, and great dec-
orating innovations by a design
team of professional interior dec-
orators and accessory specialists.
Bonus stops on the tour will be two
new Oke Woodsmith homes of-
fered for sale, and a chance to view
the Fantasy '97 Vacation Home be-
ing raffled as one of many prizes
for the five area county Catholic
school boards.
Special partner with the museum
in the co-ordination of the show is
Oke Woodsmith Building Systems,
of Hensall. This firm has either de-
signed or retro -fitted all of the
homes of the tour, as well as a pair
of new luxury homes that will be
added as the surprise 'bonus'.

Louise's Unique Interiors, and The
Flower Shop in Zurich. Land-
scaping with lights is the creation
of Lakewood Nursery of St. Jo-
seph, and Patty Dowling ofGrand
Bend will co-ordinate the popular
Candle -glow Preview. The $20.
preview tickets allow participants
to avoid crowds while they tour the
homes, lit by candles for the eve-
ning, followed by a Designer's Re-
ception for all ticket holders.
The Country Christmas Home
tour is an annual museum fund-
raiser to support educational ex-
hibits, events and school programs
offered by the Lambton Heritage
Museum. The show runs both No-
vember 9 and 10, from 10 p.m. to 5
p.m. The $10. tickets are available
