School age program offers
learning -centred childcare
The before and after school program is
run by a local Early Childhood Educator

EXETER - A before and after
school program that began in Sep-
tember offers stimulating care for
children aged four to 12.
Diane Vanbergen, a Early
Childhood Educator, operates the
Exeter School Age Program at
Exeter Public School where she
rents a room from 7 to 9 a.m. and
3:30 to 6 p.m. on weekdays. She
also offers the program for a full
day during Professional Develop-
ment days and holidays.
The program is licensed by the
Ministry of Community and So-
cial Services and meets strict pol-
icies and guidelines that ensure
children are provided with learn-
ing experiences in a safe environ-
ment.
Vanbergen stresses she does not
supply a babysitting service. She
has designed the program, which
includes crafts, sensory play, out-
door play and a reading program,
to enhance education while chil-
dren are having fun.
Although a survey Vanbergen
distributed in June indicated the
public was in favor of such a pro-
gram, reponse has been dis-
appointing.
"I was quite surprised I haven't
had many," she said.
Initially Vanbergen hoped to
open a daycare in Exeter but
when a suitable location pro-
vided difficult to find, she opted
for a before and after school pro-
gram. If the program takes off,
she has been approached by
South Huron High School to pro-
vide a co-op placement for stu-
dents interested in childcare.
Vanbergen first became inter-
ested in childcare while com-
pleting a co-op placement herself
at Brucefield Public School in the
library. She enjoyed the students
and decided to pursue education
in ECE at Fanshawe College in
London. After graduation she
worked as program supervisor at
a London daycare.
In addition to childcare and ed-
ucational experience, Vanbergen
is certified in first aid and CPR.
She has also worked with special
needs children and holds a Sec-
ond Step certificate for meeting
an anti -violence curriculum.
"Parents have a comfort in
knowing their children are safe
with me."
Although the program is not
considered an educational system,
children are surrounded by age
appropriate games, books and
toys than can provide many
learning experiences. Through
guided play, children are also
able to develop social interaction
skills.
"Many of the aspects of learn-
ing are developed through the use
of play in stimulating sur-
roundings," she explained.
Healthy snacks are aslo an im-
portant part of the program.
According to Vanbergen, par-
ents from Precious Blood School
can also take advantage of the
program. EarI's Taxi Service has
an affordable rate and will trans-
port children between schools.
Early Childhood Educator Diane VanBergen began a before
and after school childcare program in September. The pro-
gram runs out of a rented rpom at Exeter Public School. Pic-
tured at left Diane closely supervises the children while they
help to carve jack -o -lanterns for Halloween. From foreground
clockwise are: Jacob Unwin, Jolene Unwin, Stacey Bartlett,
Diane VanBergen, Gavin Harburn, Brieanna Harbum, Sean
Ellison, Meagan Ellison and Jeffrey Unwin.

Truck strikes house
KIRKTON - An unattended trac-
tor trailer struck a house and a pro-
pane cylinder last Tuesday night in
Kirkton.
The driver, Paul Westman of
London, parked his truck at the
Kirkton variety store and entered
the premises. When he returned to
his vehicle, he discovered it trav-
elling at a slow speed along High-
way #23.
The runaway truck continued
northbound for approximately 100
metres before crossing the high-
way, striking a house and an ad-
jacent propane cylinder.
Approximately 320 litres of pro-
pane leaked from the cylinder's se-
vered gas line before it was con-
tained. The Exeter Volunteer Fire
Department was dispatched to the
scene as a tire precaution.
The house, owned by Noreen An-
