Back in Time...
By Ross Haugh from the archives of
the Exeter Times Advocate
September 24, 1996 - One of Hensaii's largest employers with a
current staff of about 35 is leaving the village. Agripress president
Adrian Bayley said this week his firm is merging with Associate
Designs of London to form a single London-based advertising agen-
cy.
Melissa Moore was named Queen of the 1986 Exeter Fall fair.
She succeeds Sheryl DeBoer. Winning Queen titles in the Home -
craft division were Marylou Thompson, Cathy Norris, Mary Ruston,
Ann Delbridge, Josie Ryckman and Darlene Lynn.
September 24, 1971 - Benson W. Tuckey, president of Guenther
Tuckey Transports Ltd. announced Wednesday that he has sold his
local trucking firm. New owners are Laidlaw Motorways Ltd. of
Hamilton. Mr. Tuckey will remain as general manager of the local
operations and said business would continue as usual with no em-
ployee or operational changes.
There was no surprise at Friday's Progressive Conservative nomi-
nation meeting in Goderich as Hon. C.S. MacNaughton was named
the party's candidate in the Huron riding for the provincial October
21 election.
For the first time in many years, the weatherman was in a good
mood for the Kirkton Fair, Saturday. The fair dates were moved
ahead two weeks this year and the move proved to be successful and
district residents flocked out to provide one of the better parades
ever seen in Kirkton.
September 23, 1961 - Canadian Canners Ltd. finished packing the
biggest corn crop on record, Wednesday. Manager Don Graham
said the plant will start into carrots next week.
The RCAF Training Command band from Trenton will entertain
SHDHS students to a concert in the auditorium Monday afternoon.
A London police official will give town authorities and merchants
advice on methods of preventing robberies at a special meeting
Thursday night.
Members of the Trivitt Memorial Anglican Church choir reported
thefts of about $5 and several wallets during the special "Prayer for
Peace" service Sunday night.
September 24, 1956 - Married women teachers have stepped into
the breach and saved South Huron schools from a critical shortage
of instruction staff. Inspector John Goman said that nearly 75 per-
cent of the lady teachers in the district are married.
William Moody, road superintendent in Usborne Township for 23
years, celebrated his ninetieth birthday at the home of his daughter
Mrs. Stanley Coward.
Four new teachers joining the SHDHS staff this year are Mr. and
Mrs. Bruce Perry, Miss Heather Goldstein and Mrs. Andrew Dixon.

into and a\\quantity of cigarettes and cigars stolen, together with a
battery and a radio. A box containing fifty cent pieces was also tak-
en.

ited recently with the former's nephew Charles and Mrs. Mac -
Naughton. Judge Branson was a delegate to the General Council of
the United Church at Montreal.
Miss Helen Penhale entered Osgood Hall in Toronto as a law stu-
dent.
September 23, 1921 - Messrs. R.T. Luker and Son won first mon-
ey with The Emblem at the Chatham races last week.
Bread dropped from 12 cents to 10 cents a loaf in Exeter this
week.
September 24, 1896 - What should prove to be one of the best op-
portunities to investors and people of the vicinity would be an up-to-
date canning factory for fruits. We notice a certain factory in a
southern county sending out the results by the carloads. We had
plenty of fruit here this year to keep a large cannery running full
time and even now Targe quantities of pears, tomatoes, cucumbers,
etc. are going to waste.
Such an establishment would not pay higher prices than those paid
by our local dealers, but they would always have a ready market and
it would employ a number of hands as well.
Chris Fahner of Crediton was a successful exhibitor in the swine
class at the London Fair.

Bluewater Recycling recognized
for dedication to environment
EXETER - The Bluewater Recy-
cling Association has been recog-
nized by the Canadian Healthy En-
vironment Awards committee for
demonstrating dedication to envi-
ronmental causes.
During the past year the Bluewa-
ter Recycling added a variety of
programs to an already extensive
list.Added to the material collection
program were empty paint and aer-
osol cans ah'd fine paper. An annual
calendar is distributed to all mem-
bers to inform them of various holi-
days and special events offered by
the Association and to provide ide-
as to assist householders in reduc-
ing their waste throughout the year.
The Association also assisted a
number of member municipalities
in implementing User Pay Garbage
Programs.
The Association's latest program,
co -collection, is perhaps its most
unique and innovative. A new col-
lection vehicle gives the Associa-
tion the ability to collect recycla-
bles and refuse at the same
time.The program, among the first
in Canada, was designed to produce
greater economic savings as well as
environmental benefits.
Other prograr.is during the year
included chipping 1,022 Christmas
trees, operating household hazard-
ous waste days at five sites and var-
ious educational programs through
plant tours, speaking engagements
and displays.
As the waste management field is
constantly changing, Bluewater is
making every effort to stay abreast
of these changes.
Our member municipalities de-
serve the credit for this award.
Many have participated in various
programs offered through Bluewa-
ter to achieve waste reduction that
in most cases is already above the
Ministry's year 2000 goal of 50 per
cent.
The Bluewater Recycling Associ-
ation is a non-profit organization
consisting of more than 45 munici-
palities in Huron, Lambton, Mid-
dlesex, and Perth County providing
a wide range of waste reductio -
programs to the residential, b
ness and institutional sectors.
Huron artists open studio
HURON COUNTY - Artists
from across Huron County open
their studios each fall to invite the
public to view works that vary from
paintings and sculpture to glass de-
sign, pottery and blacksmithing.
Five of the 12 studios involved in
the tour are situated along the Lake
Huron shoreline or close to area
beaches.
Gwen Smithers-Kiar, watercolor-
ist, and George Zoethout, photo art-
ist, are both located in Goderich.
Smithers-Kiar, who displays her
works year round in The Gallery in
the Garden, is a commercial artist
graduate. Her water colors can be
enjoyed while relaxing in the gaze-
bo, surrounded by perennials, at 19
Victoria St. North.
Mixing everyday photo images
into an array of fantasy -inspired
scenes, Zoethout creates unique
pieces of artwork, incorporating
burning, weaving, painting, cutting,
smearing and rubbing into his
work.
The Bayfield area offers a sculp-
tor/painter, and potter for the visi-
tor's perusal.
Just north of Bayfield on Hwy:
21, Leda McAlister displays a se-
lection of bronze, wood or clay
sculptures as well as her paintings,
at Gallery on the Bluff.
Within the village, Sylva Leser,
of Avanti-Leser, creates individual
pieces of stoneware and porcelain.
All the items are wheel -thrown or
hand -built.
To the southern extremity of the
county, Anne Eekhoff Hamilton
and Tristan S. Eekhoff display their
paintings, prints and drawings in a
century -old farmhouse along Hwy
81
In Dungannon, Philip and Pauli
Sommer present both their collabo-
rations in glass of framed arrange-
ments of vines, grasses and seeds -
irresistible gift items - and the ultra
modern lighting, panels and water
fountains designed by Philip.
A Huron Society of Artists Stu-
dio guide is available throughout
the county at tourist information
centres and attractions, or call 529-
7561.
Anyone wishing to visit a number
of these locations may participate
in the Studio Tour, which runs
from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., October
5 and 6.
