Exeter Fall Fair focuses on market gardening
National Trust placed first in the window diplay competition
for creating a scene that best depicted the theme of the Ex-
eter Fall Fair: Focus on Market Gardening.
EXETER - An in-line hockey tournament, pet
show and fire department extrication are some of
the new activities featured the 142nd Exeter Fall
Fair.
Participants can still expect
many time-honored events
including the crowning of the
fair ambassador, livestock
shows, homecraft displays
and of course the parade .
on Saturday.
"The ambassador
competition iS al%ypys a
ds'awing cars" said Bxeterkgrithiltura Society
President Ruthanne Negrijn, who stressed that it
is not a beauty contest.
Weather is always a factor in fair attendance
added Negrijn, who has discovered attendance at
area fairs varies although Listowel's numbers
were up this year.
Along with a mandate to promote 4-H in Huron
County through promotion of event such as the
Calf Club show, organizers strive to maintain the
agricultural content of the fair.
Negrijn has been involved with fairs since she
was a child growing up in -Hay -Township. Judging
livestock has been a family tradition that begun
with her grandfather who judged beefcattle
and showed short -horns. Her
father spent a total of 70 years
showing poultry and is now a
judge who has earned a long-term
service award.
"It was a way of life for
us...attending fairs," she
said.
