Kirkton Fair parade entries enthusiastic
KIRKTON - A steady rain at noon on Saturday failed to stop the annual
Kirkton Fall Fair parade. The weather may have reduced the number of
entries but those that did participate were enthusiastic about their
involvement, especially the many boys and girls ready to march.
This was the I 27th edition of the Kirkton Fall Fair and this years theme
was. " You In Action."
The Kirkton-Woodham Community Centre was filled to capacity in the
afternoon as most of the events wrcre moved inside.
Master of ceremonies Lee Paul said it was the first time in his 43 year
association with the fair that weather had forced activities inside.
In the parade. hest decorated tricycle winners were Willow Hackett and
Greg Bilyea while best in the clown category were Allen and Kevin
Bilyea. Taking prizes for best decorated bicycles were Glen Bilyea and
Ashley and Joe Hackett.
In the junior float category. Kevin and Allen Bilyea were back in the
winners circle. They were followed by Josh and Lisa Denotter of Triple J
Farms and Matthew and Kim Brine.
Meta Contracting was tops in the best decorated car division while
decorated float winners were the Kirkton Women's Institute, the Kirkton
Scouts and the Kirkton-Woodham Optimists.
Vernon Thomson and the Shewfelt family were superior with their
comic vehicles and Andrew Douglas with his horse Spitz won in the best
dressed horse and rider category. Best in commercial floats were Jim
• Wiles and Quadro.
In the indoor exhibits the junior and senior baking championships,
respectively, were won by Emily Payton and Hilary Hardeman. Princess
and Prince of the Pumpkin Patch were Debra Wallis and Ben Willis.
in Class 42 Flower Specials, Gertrude Willis took four prizes, Evelyn
Harrigan and Jean Ratclife each won two prizes and Olga Hem was a
single winner. Amassing most points were Harrigan and Ratcliffe.
Rita Van Wieren gained the most points in the crafts, hobbies and
decorations section.
The Ontario Agricultural Museum quilt competition was won by Marion
Jaques. Winners in canning were Eselyn Wiles and Wendy Nethercott.
In the grain and seeds category. whine'. weft. ('hri. Wccrnink, Vernon
Thomson and Brian Bcarss. In the field ciop competition. Fred Cowdrey
wasttops in wheat and Larry Rundle took honor. in .os bean..
Alice Wallis won the Shirley Brintncll Memorial her gaining the most
points in the baking class. Other winners were Ruth Johnson. Leslie
Switzer, Isabelle Marquardt, Anna Dolmage, Elaine Toohey and Eleanor
Williams. Grace Brine won the honey special muffins prize.
A. pet show and baby show were also held Saturday afternoon. No
judging was done in these two events. Secretary Helen Hardeman said,
"They were all considered winners and received the same prizes."
Sunday's planned demolition derby was cancelled, but the fiddler's
jamboree went ahead as scheduled and was well attended.
Carole Damen was president of this year's fair and Helen Hardeman was
the secretary -treasurer.

club show was a Highland calf Fergie,
shown by owner Nicole Haynes, R.R. 1,
St. Marys.
Members of the Kirkton Fair parade committee , Eleanor
Williams and Bill Waghom are huddled under an umbrella
trying to decide if the parade should go despite the rainy
conditions. It did go ahead.
