Times Advocate, 1996-09-18, Page 51 1 ac Time... By Ross Haugh from the archives of the Exeter Times Advocate 10 YEARS AGO September 17, 1986 - Whether it was measured in metric (176.2 millimeters) or imperial (6.94 inches) the rainfall of the past week crested major headaches and Tosses for many area residents. Many homeowners who had flooded basements have already assessed their damages. Bert VisschCr of Visscher Farms reports he has lost 40 acres of cauliflower and 20 acres of broccoli and estimates his loss at $150,000. 25 YEARS AGO September 16, 1971 - Political activity started to swing into high gear this week following the announcement by Premier William Da- vis that Ontario voters will go to the polls on October 21. Salaries for the administrative staff of the Huron County Board of Education were adjusted at a special meeting recently. The director of education received a $2,000 per annum increase of $27,000. The five superintendents will receive salaries ranging from $21,000 to $23,000. Rebellion discount prices are in effect this week at Darling's Exet- er TGA and Betty and Art's LGA in Grand Bend including red or blue savoy steaks at 99 cents a pound, 9 oz. packages of french fries for nine cents and Chiquita brand bananas for 13 cents a pound. 35 YEARS AGO September 18, 1961 - Ken Cudmore of London, formerly of Exet- er was the winner of the $25,000 Shrine home giveaway at the Western Fair this week. Kongskilde Maskinfabrik of Soroe, Sweden has purchased the for- mer Northland Hatchery Ltd. building on Highway 83 according to Exeter Industrial Development chairman W.G. Cochrane. 40 YEARS AGO September 17, 1956 - Bus transportation for rural students costing approximately $30,000 for the school year, was approved at a meet- ing of SHDHS last week. Charles L. Jinks, 78, a resident of Hensall for over 50 years and rural mail carrier on R.R. 1, Hensall for 34 years is retiring because of ill health. Dianne Rennie, Hensall won first prize for her safety poster at the Hensall School Fair, Friday. Over 800 entries were exhibited by children from six schools. Mrs. Almer Passmore, R.R. 1, Woodham. mother of three children became the first winner of Gram's Trophy, donated by the Times Advocate to the champion cook of the district at the Exeter Fall Fair. 50 YEARS AGO September 15, 1946 - Over 10,000 ration books were issued in the Exeter district. Mr. R.N. Creech who was in charge of the distribu- tion here, was assisted by a number of volunteer workers. A half penny bank token of the Bank of Upper Canada was found by Mrs. M. McAvoy in her garden. Date on the coin was 1857. 75 YEARS AGO September 16, 1921 - Sometime during one night last week thieves got into the store of W.W. Taman and stole a quantity of men's furnishings. They got through the cellar window and went out the back door. Messrs. E.J. Wethey, W.C. Rivers and G.E. Anderson won the Friday evening lawn bowling tourney. Among the many outstanding features of the Exeter Fall Fair last week was the egg demonstration put on by the government, assisted by C.F. Hooper. Other noteworthy exhibits were those of M.C. Gar- diner, with a most beautifully arranged line of furniture: W.W. Ta- man, gents' suiting and furnishings and O. Southcott, store goods. 100 YEARS AGO September 17, 1896 - Bicyclists claim that some farmers are in the habit of refusing to give them a share of the road. Bicyclists are enti- tled to half of the road and offenders are liable to prosecution. The fact that he is seated on a big !amber wagon in a collision in:which a bicycle would be totally wrecked, does not give any man a right to more than half of the road. More houses in town are badly needed. The Times has enquiries almost every day for houses, and it is difficult to answer them, as there is hardly an available house to rent. Coon hunting is the sport in the country these nights. The apple crop in this section is so large that many farmers have had to prop their trees to keep them from breaking. There are two evaporating institutions here, besides nearly every second farmer has a small plant of his own. Thousands of dollars worth of apples are wasting on the trees. Marriage licences are now issued at Hick's Jewelry Store. No wit- nesses are required. ata` news tip? Times -Advocate, September 18, 1996 Page 5 Huron Board of Education and Canadian HOMEtown extend partnership doctors CLINTON - Following a meeting between officials of the Huron County Board of Education and representatives of the HOMEtown Community Internet Network, agreement has been reached to ex- tend the working partnership be- tween the local school board and the HOMEtown community Co-op Internet service provider. As an ad- ditional step towards the develop- ment of an integrated electronic communication network across Hu- ron County, the board has agreed to extend access to its internal, more secure, 'intranet' communications system to HOMEtown. The result will be to allow the HOMEtown group to market a combined Inter- net/intranet package to agencies and groups requiring such services. While Internet service provides global access to the information highway, the more restricted 'intra- net' system will allow groups in multiple locations to intercopnect via the local, higher security infor- mation e-mail package, by utilizing the Internet connection but now al- lowing the usual broad access to such information. This service will be of interest to any groups requir- ing the transfer of confidential in- formation, data, graphics and textu- al information in a more secure environment. Steps were also announced to provide a working 'intranet' com- munication system to the Huron County Library, using Huron County Board of Education soft- ware and support systems to dem- onstrate the concept. A presentation of the combined information service package will be made to the October meeting of the Association of Clerk Treasurers for Huron County. An update is being provided to the Information Com- mittee of the Huron Community Services Network on September 19. For more information contact Bert Meerveld at HOMEtown at 519-660-6657 or Shelley King at the Education Centre at 519-482- 3496. LCBO introduces BYID photo ID card TORONTO - The LCBO is intro- ducing a new BYID (Bring Your Identification) photo ID card to make it easier to determine whether its customers are of legal drinking age. Issued to persons 19 years of age or older, the new BYID card has been developed in response to pub- lic requests for a new form of ID card since the Ontario Photo Card, formerly produced by the Liquor Licence Board of Ontario (LLBO), was discontinued in April of this year. The BY1D card costs $15. and is the same size as a driver's licence. It includes the applicant's name, date of birth, date of issue and a se- rial number. The LCBO has suggested that Brewer's Retail Inc. and Ontario wineries also accept the BYID card as proof of age in their stores. All LCBO stores carry applica- tion forms for the BYID card in their information racks. The appli- cations come with a bilingual tear - off form for customers to send to LCBO head office in Toronto for processing. Applications can also be requested through the toll-free LCBO Infoline 1-800-ONT-LCBO (668-5226.) In Metro Toronto call (416) 365-5900. The penalty for submitting false information is up to one year im- prisonment or a fine up to $100,000 or both. Ontario Photo Cards will still be accepted as proof of age in LCBO outlets, as will valid passports, div- er's licences, Canadian citizenship cards and military cards. These forms of identification are still the only valid proof of age in licenseed Applicants for BYID cards must provide a current photograph, along with the signature of a guar- antor, such as a lawyer, medical doctor, bank manager or profes- sional accountant who can vouch Macre 11116 *atoms A..l,.t.
