Lingard scores three goals
LONDON - The Exeter Centen-
nials enjoyed a return to the win
column on Wednesday night, but
suffered an important loss on Satur-
day putting their playoff pursuit in
jeopardy.
On Wednesday, the Centennials
travelled to London to take on Mal-
tese. Wasting no time, the visitors
took a strong offensive effort to the
Maltese defense, resulting in a nat-
ural hat -trick for Jeff Lingard after
only 15 minutes of play.
The first two cathe off excellent
crosses from Shawn Rotteau and
Ruud Veldhuizen. Lingard buried
the first with his foot and the sec-
ond with a header.
The third was all Lingard after
he intercepted a pass, streaked past
the defender and pounded the hall
into the far corner. It was Lingard's
third hat -trick of the season.

Coming off the bench, Scott Hod-
gins of Granton took a pass just
outside the Maltese penalty area
and struck it well as it "knuckled"
past the host keeper to make the
score 4-1.
Ruban Chelladurai rounded out
the first-half scoring when he one -
timed a pass high under the cross-
bar. The Centennials were relative-
ly quiet in the second half. Chella-
durai found the net again late in the
game and the final score was 6-1
for the Centennials.
However, the overwhelming of-
fense visited upon the haplass Mal-
tese was conspicuously absent
when the Centennials visited Scot-
tish on Saturday. Once again, every
good scoring opportunity was
squandered.
A perfect pass from Joe D'Ariano
up to striker Nick Szabo was
pushed wide when Szabo tried to
chip it over the charging Scottish
keeper.
Szabo. Lingard and Anders Mill-
ner all missed from close up and,
due to one defensive miscue, the
visitors were down 1-0 after 45
minutes instead of having a 2-0 or
3-0 lead.
This lack of offense continued in
the second half and eventually, the
host Scottish found the net as the
Centennials pushed more players
forward for more offense. The final
score was 3-0, giving the Centenni-
als an 8-7 season record.
The team will try to start a five -
game winning streak to end the sea-
son on Sunday at 4 p.m. at Nabisco
Field when they host Marconi in a
pivotal game.

O000hh what a feeling. Ron Elliot gets a base hit for the
Exeter Express. A positive attitude and team spirit pre-
vailed in the dugout as Exeter defeated Strathroy 12-7 in
the first game of the League Championships last Tues-
day.
Express win
playoff opener
Exeter Express are only eight wins
away from an O.B.A. championship
EXETER - The Exeter Express began their League Champion-
ships with a 12-7 win over Strathroy last Tuesday.
Motivated by the team mascot, Marty Mcrner threatened to hog
the pitcher's mound throwing for six full innings allowing seven
runs on 11 hits. Mike Agnew stepped in for relief shutting down
Strathroy in the last inning.
Dave Kusset1 continued his, hitting streak notching two singles and
a home run. Bill Glover, Rick Boon, Paul Smith, Fred Gregus, Dar-
cy Martin and Ron Elliott also recorded hits for Exeter.
If the Express won their home game against London yesterday (re-
sults were not known at press time) they would be sitting on a 2-0
record heading into the league playoffs held in Listowel this week-
end and could be poised to win the third game for a berth in the tii=
nals.
Co -coach Doug Fairbairn said, winning the League Championship
isn't as important as winning (he prestigious Ontario Baseball As-
sociation Championships scheduled for Labor Day weekend, how-
ever, the last two times Exeter captured the O.B.A. title in 1986 and
1988 the road was paved with a league championship.
Depending on the outcome of Tuesday's game and what team they
meet in the third round, a league championship is a realistic possibil-
ity for the Express who are taking on a serious attitude about win-
ning beth league and O.B.A. titles.
"From here on Joe (Fulop) and I are coaching to win. We know
what it takes and we know we can do it," said Fairbairn. "We're
only eight wins away from an O.B.A. Championship."

is Hackney Finished fifth with two
wins 39.
