to Robert Hoffman of Dashwood onwinning the
TA's first annual "BEST LOOKING FARM CONTEST"
Robert Hoffman's Dashwood farm was purchased in the summer of 1967 from Charles and Hazel Snell. A Junior Farmer loan was obtained to purchase the farm.
Mr. Snell preferred not to have an auction sale and so included with the farm were two Ford tractors, a Case combine and other farm machinery to start up farming. In
the late 1960's Dutch Elm disease destroyed all the large elm trees on fence lines which had to be cut down as well as the old apple orchard behind the house.
The soil on the farm is clay loam and the 15 acres of bush is made up mainly of hard maple, beech, white ash, black cherry and basswood. Over the years with the co-
operation of the Ausable-Bayfield Conservation Authority programs, spruce, pine, cedar ash and maple trees have been planted on the farm. The entire 160 rod east
fence line has been planted with Austrees. These trees make an excellent fast-growing windbreak and reach heights of 80 to 100 feet.
In 1968 a new hydro service was installed and the barn totally rewired. Also in 1968 a large municipal drain (Rader -Hoffman Drain) crossed the farm which gave an
outlet for future tile that has been laid over the years. In 1969 a silo 14'x50' was erected to hold the corn crop for beef cows and finishing calves. In 1970 a large barn
addition was built over the barnyard and a south addition added a few years later to cover the entire east manger. Old rail and wire fences were cleared and new fences
erected. Each year improvements have been made to buildings, painting, new steel siding and roofs. Several families have called the old farm house (built in 1872) home
between the years 1967 and 1983. In 1983 the house was renovated for a retirement home for in-laws Ward and Norma Kraft. In 1989 a large machinery shed and shop
were built. Bob has called the farm house home since December 1991. The farm has been a cow/calf operation with soyabeans and grain as cash crops. This fall the cow
herd will be entirely purebred Charolais. In recent years Bob Teas maintained a 25-30 cow herd with four or five replacement heifers from his own calves each year.
Sons Rob, Tim and Ted have helped with chores, haying and baling straw over the years. New International tractors, drill, cultivator, manure spreader, baler etc. have
been purchased over the years to keep custom work paid out to a minimum.
The farm has been a change for Bob from his other full-time positions as funeral director and ambulance attendant.
