Call the Times -Advocate 235-1331 Centennials blank Maltese at home EXETER - A highly motivated Exeter Centennials soccer club, de.' orate to stay in the hunt for top spot in the Western Ontario Soccer League Division 2 Central, re- turned to their winning ways with a 3-0 win over visiting Maltese on Sunday. Early, in the first half, Nick Sza- bo took a great feed from Ruban Chelladurai, split the defense and notched his first goal of the season for the Centennials. That finished the scoring for a while, as the strik- ers went cold for most of the game. Jeff Lingard and Mark Brintnell all missed clean breakaways and Dan Martens and Shawn Rotteau just missed the net from sharp an- gles. Twice Szabo found himself in alone in front of the net but couldn't get the ball past the Mal- tese goal keeper who took two shots off the chest at point blank range. Rotteau and Lingard also hit posts. The visitors nearly tied it near the end of the first half, but a well - struck ball sailed over the bar. Brintnell finally got the 2-0 goal when he was trying desperately to get out of the way of a Szabo shot. The ball ricocheted off his butt into the back of the net. Determined to get on the score- board the Maltese team managed two good scoring opportunities, but both shots were stopped by Centen- nials goal keeper George McEwan who played an aggressive game be- tween the posts. A combination of McEwa's con- fident play and the two goal lead seemed to relax the Centennials as they scored once more compli- ments of Brintnell who took a nice feed from Szabo to secure the 3-0 win. Showing the need for more prac- tice, the Centennials head into a tough game on Sunday at 4 p.m. at the Nabisco Field against arch ri- vals St. Columban. f Mark Brintnell makes a defensive play during the Centen- nial's 3-0 win over the visiting Maltese on Sunday. Cop Juniors stay sharp with scheduled exhibition games EXETER - The Exeter Co-op Juniors won their last two garnes beating Arva 17-9 on Sunday and Thorndale 12-9 on Thursday. Exeter's defense has been consis- tently sharp and displayed this on Thursday as they turned two double plays and played the game with no errors. Offensively the whole team is hit- ting with power and confidence. Blake Schade continues to lead. On Thursday he hit three for three and had a walk. He also blasted one over the left field fence, and hit two singles. Mark Glavin hit two dou- bles and a single, Scot Kemp had two doubles and a single as well, Dale Hopf and Bill Hodge each had a double, Darryl Hartman two sin- gles, Chad Ramer continues to exe- cute bunts for singles with great speed. Jason Maskeil singled, stole second and scored on a well execut- ed hit and run, with twin brother Joe Maskell. Mark Glavin pitched five innings against Arva on Sunday. Although Arva batters managed to get some hits off of Glavin, Exeter's defense came up with some good plays to keep Exeter in the game. Dan Van Stratten pitched the last four innings. He struck out five bat- Chansamone brothers score two as Fury tie St. Thomas ST. THOMAS - The Chansa- mone brothers teamed up to score a couple of goals for the Exeter Fury but it wasn't enough as they tied St. Thomas 2-2 on Sunday. The Fury came out strong in the first half and were all over their op- ponents for the first 15 minutes, however, St. Thomas scored on a lucky break. Khampane Chansa- mone replied for the Fury and tied the game late in the half. The second frame proved to be the total opposite of the first as St. Thomas came out flying scoring their second goal against Exeter early. They pressed hard and threatened to score again but Fury net minder Craig Winbow turned away all of their attempts to find the back of the net. Nearing the end of the game with a one goal deficit, Fury coach Jeff Playfoot made some changes on the field stacking his team with his best offensive players. The move paid off. Exeter was awarded a goal kick from the 18 yard line. Mark Lynn took the shot and chipped it over a handful of St Thomas defensm n toward their net. Bounmy Chansa- mone saw the goal scoring oppor- tunity and went up to redirect the ball into the net with his head. "It was amazing. He came out of nowhere to head that ball," said Playfoot. The tie had to satisfy the Fury who scored two goals against a team that has only allowed six goals during the entire season. Playfoot said the team handled themselves with discipline and kept their cool in the rough and chippy game. "It was the type of game that made me wish I was playing my- self," said Playfoot. The Exeter Fury are now 4-3-3. Their next game is against Wood- stock at 6 p.m. on Sunday in Exet- er. Blake Schade blasted a double and hit two singles, Joe Maskell tripled and singled, Jason Maskell ripped three singles, Scot Kemp doubled and hit two singles, Mark Glavin doubled and singled. Coach Gary Hartman credits the Co -Op Junior's success behind the bats to smart calculated thinking. "The entire team is swinging for base hits, not trying to hit home runs," said Hartman With eight pitchers on the Junior Co -Op squad, and only four games left in the schedule, the coaches are faced with a problem of giving all these pitchers enough innings. The regular starters are all pitching well enough to go seven, eight and nine innings straight. Dwight Gingerich, Dan Van Stratten and Dennis McCann all shared pitching duties in Thurs- day's contest. Combined, they gave Shuffleboard Hensel! League playoffs are a double knockout tournament that take place in Strathroy on August 9, 10 and 11. "We can't afford to be idle for three weeks. We have to keep play- ing or else we may as well call the season over," said Hartman. In an effort to improve their game the Co -Op Juniors have chal- lenged the Exeter Express for a three game exhibition contest in August, to gain some pitching prac- tise, and a learning experience from the senior ball players. Scot Kemp, Darryl Hartman, Mark Glavin and Dwight Gingerich will all be used as starters. Middle relief pitching will be Dennis McCann, Greg Vissor and Dan Van Stratten. Shawn Gillespie will be used as a closer. Exeter will be in Clinton Wednesday night for a 9 p.m. game and off to Hanover on Friday, Sat- urday and Sunday. St. Paul's Generals won the 'A' Division of the round robir affair. The Generals, who lost the final game with Melbourne by a score of 11-0, finished with a record of four wins and two losses. Simcoe and St. Thomas finished in a tie for third as they were eliminated in the seini fi- nals by Melbourne and St. Paul's respectively. During the round robin and playoff, Melbourne defeated Sim- coe, who are one of the top rated In- termediate teams in Ontario, twice, by scores of 3-1 and 4-0.
