Times Advocate, 1994-06-29, Page 16Page 16 Tines -Advocate, lune 29, 1994 s____J_?(I:,___R.iJi:S__ -- Speed boats are coming to Grand Bend By Fred Groves T -A staff GRAND BEND - The roar of the engines are corning to the waters of Grand Bend. On July 8-10 some of the fastest racing boats in North America will be competing in the Power Boating Canada Magazine's Lake Huron Poker Run. "It's our fust one and we're going to have some growing pains," said local organizer Terry McTavish. A racer himself for several years, McTavish said this is a rare op- portunity for spectators to get a glimpse at some of the boats such as the Snap-On Tools of Canada Ltd. sponsored racer. This particular boat is a 38 -foot Kular-constructed Wellcraft Scar- ab' nd has twin 600 h.p engines. There will be others such as Dr. John Merola of New York who was third at last year's World Offshore Championship in Key West. He is bringing his quadruples Mercury outboard powered catamaran called "Fore Play" to challenge the waters of Lake Huron for the first time. "It's not often you get to see 45- 50 foot racers that are close up. Racers are friendly, it's to promote the sport," said McTavish. Spectators are welcomed and in- ited to visit the "wet pits" at Grand Bend harbour on Friday afternoon and evening and Saturday morning and evening and admission is free. Many of the boats will be trans- ported on large rigs as they arrive from Florida, North Carolina, New York, Michigan and across Canada. When they arrive in Grand Bend and begin to set up, it will quickly begin to resemble the same set up they have for car racing. "Some of these guys literally have machine shops on wheels. It's not your run-of-the-mill boat," said "Fore play" is one of the speed boats which will be in Grand Bend. (Photo by Bernard Dupuis) McTavish. It is doubtful he will be putting his boat into the event as he will be assisting with on the water activ- ities. Nevertheless, he is aware of the impact it could have on Grand Bend and the other participating Lakeshore communities. "There are four poker runs in On- tario. They (communities) felt it was good business and they are gung-ho. You generate a lot of money in one of these things." Run and races: At 9:30 a.m. on Saturday the waters will begin to chum as the nearly 60 expected powerboats head out on the first leg of the poker run. From Grand Bend, the boats head to Bayfield for their second poker card and a chance to check their en- gines and fuel supply. Then its off on the longest segment, north around Clark Shoal and into Kin- cardine for lunch. The return trip has them stop in Goderich for the fourth card. Back in Grand Bend, they get their fifth and final card and after - words a banquet and awards cer- emony will be held. The Lake Hu- ron Poker Run is designed to be a safe and fun event and speed plays no role in the outcome. On Sunday, beginning at 10 a.m. spectators will line the shore to watch up to thirty of the fastest poker run boats vie for "King -of - the -Hill" status as they race along a four -kilometre long course. They will be placed into three categories; V -bottom boats up to 35 -feet; V -bottom boats over 35 - feet; catamarans and tunnel hulls. Some of the boats participating could be packing as much as 3,000 combined horsepower and be val- ued at up to half a million dollars. "The Grand Bend organizing group for our Poker Run has been so enthusiastic and dynamic in making this whole event possible that it was just natural to make this the site of the first-ever Great Ca- nadian Kilo Challenge," said Bill Taylor, publisher of Power Boating Canada Magazine. Lord with a double and Van Raay with a bunt kept the inning alive as seven more runs crossed the plate. Kennedy, Coates, Lord and Van Raay notched three more runs in the third inning while Exeter crossed the .plate -three times.- -- - Two more runs were tallied in the fourth inning with singles from Glavin, Simpson, Lord, Deanna Olmsted and a double by Angie Gould. Exeter was held scoreless in the third and fourth innings but Credi- ton came right back in the fifth with the first three batters scoring. Stacey Rader pounded out a triple ,to start the inning, Jill .Sararas "walked and Tatnmy Smith and Simpson notched singles. Exeter scored one run apiece in the sixth and seventh inning but couldn't seem to get a rally going. Strong fielding by Gould, Coates, Glavin, Kennedy and Helen Theo- philopoulos kept the Greys' chanc- es to a minimum. Simpson pitched the whole game notching four strikeouts. The Classics met the Kirkton team Monday night. our V Letters to the editor Soccer story misleading ... The Centennials play an aggressive, fair brand of soccer.... Dear Editor: This letter is in response to your article of Wednesday June 22 about the soccer game between the Exeter Centennials and Alianza. The story and photograph are appreciated by the Centennials, but it is also both misleading and, in one instance, false. Your choice of negative aspects of the game as the initial focus is unfortunate and, in my opinion, unbecoming of a community news- paper. The play development of Mike Troy, mid- field control by Aaron Weston and Joe Martens, and the excellent play of the Alianza goalkeeper were all far more deserving of your print space than a sin- gle unfortunate incident between two players. That incident alone, as reported by you, left readers won- dering why punches were thrown and why it oc- curred in a soccer match. You owe the readers and the Centennials an explanation of the play that led to the incident, specifically that the referee con- doned unnecessarily rough play and that logically resulted in tempers rising and, most importantly, that Keo Chansamone was punched rtr§t'and he re- taliated in his own defense. This brings me to my next point, your false state- ment. You -state that I was ejectedforthrowing- punches. You were at the game, yet you alone seem to have this memory of it. My ejection was due to the referee's interpretation of a rule. I challenged an Alianza player for a 50/50 ball. We collided and he was injured. As goalkeeper, I can be automatically ejected for such a collision if the referee determines that I did it to prevent a sure goal and this is how the official saw it. No punches were thrown by either of us! The Centennials play an aggressive, fair brand of soccer. When opposing teams play rough, or .when one of our own bends the rules, we need the referee to keep the game in line (Watch any World Cup match to see how well it works). We also need the local press to report on our games objectively and, for the sake of readers who are developing soccer players, as positively as possi- ble. When the game turns for the worse, explana- tions are vital, since soccer is not generally a violent game. Please feel free to discuss the games with any of the Centennial players if clarification is required. Express blanked 13-0 by Lakeside Record now stands at 5-5 EXETER - It was a tough night for the Exeter Express last Tues- day as they were blasted 13-0 by visiting Lakeside. The loss saw the Express drop their Great Lakes Senior Baseball League record to 5- 5. Manager Joe Fulop said it was a case of playing too many games in such a short time period and the heat has not helped things much either. Lakeside belted out 14 hits and took advantage of five Exeter er- rors to lead 4-0 at the top of the first inning and score at least one run every inning except the second. The Express could only manage three hits, two by outfielder Don Macdonald and the other by Bill Glover. Ron Elliott started on the mound for the hosts but Mike Agnew came on after three innings. Agnew went three frames giving up eight hits and six runs before Dave Russell came on to finish the game. ever Jiiilf 11 Ind- ulder.r June 25 Exeter 2 vs. Mount Brydges Bobcats 2 Goals: Michelle Hakvoort (2) Exeter V Wd:Things June 27 Exeter 0 vs. DKB Super Power (Komoka) 2 Goalies: Hayley Snell, Amy Edwards An excellent second half effort from the entire team but they couldn't get the hall in the net.
