Johnson threw his javelin a personal - best distance of 62.74 metres Friday morning at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations meet in Kitchener. John Hustler of Cobourg East, nursing a sore elbow, came close, very close to Johnson's mark with a throw of 62.30 me- tres. "I was ahead and it was almost like a re- curring nightmare from last year," said Johnson, who rushed to the tape to con- firm that he was still in the lead, if by only 44 centimetres. "It still hasn't sunk in that I won," he said. "I don't seem like that kind of guy to win OFSAA." Johnson broke Dave Shaw's record at the Huron Perth finals this season with a throw of 60.94 metres, advanced to WOS- SA to win with a throw of 59.66 metres, and then cleaned up at the OFSAA re- gionals with a personal best of 61.94. Fri- day's effort was once again his best -ever performance. "I feel like I hit the cycle, like in base- ball," said Johnson, referring to the two OFSAA bronze medals while a junior, and the silver medal he won last year as a mid- get. "It was my last chance [for gold]," he said. American universities, which do offer scholarships for track programs, are still interested in Johnson's abilities. Data sent to him from Harvard indicates that the New England championship was won a couple of seasons ago with a throw just over 60 metres. Not only is Johnson's arm in the run- ning, "OFSAA is like winning your state," he said. The javelin star was honoured Monday afternoon with a special presentation in front of the whole school. He was pre- sented with an oversized gold medal by the Room 110 students, and received a standing ovation from the entire student body. Randy Johnson with his WOSSA and OFSAA gold medals, and an oversized gift from the students of Room 110. Another personal best javelin throw makes him the top-ranked thrower in the province.
