Therapy dogs visit Bluewater Queensway residents
enjoy bingo games
Bull terriers, not to be confused with Pitbulls, are good with the elderly

ZURICH - Some unusual visitors
have been frequenting Zurich's
Bluewater rest home for the past
two months. Each time they come
they demand nothing more than a
pat on the head, and some friendly
words, and usually sit there while
saying nothing.
Bull terriers, Roz and Grace,
owned by Kate Fletcher, and her
step -daughter Melanie Fletcher, of
Bull Lover's Kennels are newly li-
censed therapy dogs who are spe-
cially trained to work with senior
citizens, children or anyone with a
disability.
"It's amazing to see how the sen-
iors have changed since we started
bringing the dogs out," says Fletch-
er. "Some people who were a bit
teary at first come out every week
now, and they really get excited."
Fletcher's dogs are especially un-
usual because of their breed. Bull
terriers, who are commonly con-
fused with Pitbulls, are relatively
new to the therapy dog field. Only
one other Bull terrier has been giv-
en it's therapy license in Canada.
The testing for therapy dogs are
extensive and involve teaching the
dog crowd training, to not react to
sudden noises or movement, teach-
ing them not to bark or sniff, or
look interested in other people,
dogs, or food, on command. Roz
and Grace were given their licenses
two weeks ago in Paris Ontario.

EXETER - A break and enter Sat-
urday night left a Hay township resi-
dent missing a S24,000 in stereo
equipment.
The theft occurred on highway 21
near side road 20-21. Police have
noted other similar incidents of this
sort in two other detachment houses
in the past three weeks.
All of the residences have a satel-
lite dish on the property, which po-
lice think may attract the thieves.
A set of Golf clubs were stolen
from a garage on Anne street in Ex-
eter.
An 18 speed CCM bicycle was
stolen from the Huron Park Air
Show, with the serial number
715302.
Two vandalism incidents occurred
in the arca. Several mailboxes were
destroyed in Hay township on Fri-
day night.
Also a vehicle parked at Dash-
wood Ambulance was vandalized
on Sunday. The damage consisted
of scratch marks down the side of a
1994 GMC pickup.

to being a candy stripper, you
might want to do that before you go
ahead and become a nurse," says
Fletcher.
Her dogs are Canadian cham-
pions with•their CGC (canine good
citizen) and TDT (therapy dog ti-
tle). However, it is because Fletch-
er wants to dispel the myth about
Bull Terriers being like Pitbulls
that she has decided to do so much
with her dogs. "I'm proud to show
what my dogs can do," she says, "it
also allows me the opportunity to
participate in a volunteer activity
that I enjoy."
According to Fletcher the dogs
are very unique in that they are a
one family dog, not a one person
dog. She says they Arc very loyal,
and they have a lot of character.
People describe them like a clown.
They love to entertain. One well-
known Bull terrier is Don Cherry's
Blue.
"They're very unusual dogs," says
Bluewater resident Clarence Smil-
lie, formerly of Hensall, "They are
so well trained. I've never had any
dogs that were educated like that."
Fletcher says that even the res-
idents that don't like dogs will start
to talk and open up, even if it's
from a distance. The staff, she
says, were at first a bit concerned
about the sessions, but the dogs
have proven to be in control, so
they now have full access to the
whole building. "Some are still
comfortable looking but not touch-
ing," says Fletcher.
HENSALL - On Monday after-
noon, the ladies' group from Hen -
sell United Church joined resi-
dents at Queensway Nursing
Home to provide a bingo pro-
gram. The group hosted bingo for
the month of May and provided
all the prizes.
With the nice weathet; residents
are taking every possible opportu-
nity to be outside. The people
from Exeter's Christian Reform
Church came and took some resi-
dents out for car rides. They en-
joyed a trip to Grand Bend and
had a small picnic at the Conser-
vation Park. Friday afternoon the
residents enjoyed walking and
basking in the sunshine.
Saturday afternoon some folks
were outside again and others
gathered to watch the afternoon
movie "Look Who's Talking
Now!"
