On Monday, as part of National Emergency Medical Services Week, the Zurich Ambulance Service opened its doors to show people what they are all about. While the local service covers a very wide area and is responsible for the villages of Hensall, Zurich, Hay- field as well as surrounding townships, it seems a lot of people go to the South Huron District Hospital them- selves. "Especially in a rural setting like Zurich is, they are more inclined to hop in the car and go to the hospital then calling us," said Cynthia Tripp who is the supervisor of the Zurich Ambulance Service. The service is owned and operated by Brad Lucas who also owns the ambulance in Seaforth and in Clinton. On Monday, Tripp and fellow attendant Jerry Hetherington were on hand to show any one who attended the open house, how an ambulance works. "We show them the ambulance and answer questions. There are some things we can't do that paramedics do." There are three full-time employees of the service and seven part-timers who help man the ambulance 24 hours a day, seven days a week. When asked if the Zurich ambulance had to large of a coverage area, Tripp said, "it's just about right. It takes us 14 minutes to get to Bayfield for a Code Four and that's the farthest." A Code Four refers to the most serious of all calls which probably would include life-threatening situations. About half of the ambulance's calls are non -emergency calls such as transfers from hospitals and to nursing homes and seniors residences. All ambulances including the one in Zurich and Hoffman's in Dash- wood are fully equipped for medical emergencies. .."ar 4l 44173 Showing some of their equipment during the open house on ton, left; and Cynthia Tripp of the Zurich Ambulance Service.
