Double overtime win lifts Flyers past Lucan Irish
By Fred Groves
T -A staff
LUCAN - What happens in the
regular season means absolutely
nothing. Just ask the Lucan Irish.
Sunday afternoon following a
dramatic, nail-biting, on the edge-
of- your -seat double overtime
game, the Irish trail the Alvinston
Flyers two -games -to -one in their
best -of -seven OHA Junior Devel-
opment west division quarter-
finals.
During the regular season, the
Irish beat the flyers in all five
games. In the final standings, sec-
ond -place Lucan piled up 30 more
points then seventh -place Alvins-
ton.
In front of a large and vocal
crowd, the visiting Flyers beat Lu -
can 2-1 on Sunday afternoon. Fri-
day in Alvinston it was the Irish on
top 5-2 while the Flyers took Game
One in Lucan 3-2 last Wednesday.
Game Four was played last night
in Alvinston and the series comes
back to Lucan tonight at 8:15 p.m.
"In the playoffs, anyone is going
to beat anyone. There's a lot morn
parity in this league then there's
been in a long time," said Lucair
coach Ken Needham.
Colliding with Alvinston goalie Matt DanBrook on Sunday was Lucan's Jim Stanton.
allowed just one goal in the OHA Junior Development League playoff game which
into double overtime.

ing. During the regular season the
trio combined for 118 goals.
"We led the league in scoring
,during .the regular season but we
;didn't have the hunger to finish
.around the net," said Exeter coach
George Pratt.
Although Pratt tried to juggle his
lines Saturday, it seemed as though
Geiger and the Ramer brothers
were always there getting in the
way.
"They knew as soon as that scor-
ing line comes on, Geiger's line
goes on," said Guy.
The best player on the ice for ei-
ther team during the entire series
was Seaforth veteran goalie Dana
Duskocy. Sporting a 2.61 goals
against average during the regular
season, he made 19 saves in the
second period of Saturday night's
game.
"I think the biggest difference
was the goaltending," said Pratt.
"He (Duskocy) played well the
whole series."
In the final regular season game
between the two teams, the Hawks
rattled Duskocy and he gave up
seven goals. They tried to excite
him Saturday but it didn't work.
He took an unsportsmanlike pen-
alty and lost his composure briefly
on Saturday but Guy said that made)
him play better.
"He gets mad and then he turns)
out a great effort."
Rough stuff: The Hawks came
out hitting hard in the opening few
minutes of Saturday's contest but
that just meant trips to the penalty
box and the visitors put three pow-
erplay goals past Kirk Durand.
McLlwain, the Cents leading scorer
during the regular campaign,
scored twice in the first frame with
the other goal going to his line -
mate, Jason Hayter.
Ray Cousineau who played well
on Saturday set up both Dan Ryan
in the first, and Sean McCann in
the second. Carroll and Ted Sills
had the other Seaforth goals.
Cent uaires 2. Hawks 1
Game One in Exeter last Tuesday
night saw the visiting Centenaires
do what they do best, play defen-
sive hockey,
Although the Hawks' Todd
McCann scored just 1:04 into the
game. that was the only goal west
division all-star puck stopper Dus-
kocy would let get by him. He only
had 17 shots come his way as his
teammates managed to keep the
Hawks well away from the Sea -
forth end of the rink.
Answering for Seaforth were Ted
Sills late in the first period and
Scott connected in the second. Ex-
ete goalie Chris Lyndon saw a little
more work making 19 saves.
DanBrook

While the Flyers were beating
Lucan, in Parkhill the North Mid-
dlesex Stars, winners of just seven
regular season games, were playing
giant killers beating defending
champion Mitchell for the second
time in three post -season games.
Sunday's game in Lucan was a
goaltenders battle as Flyers' puck -
stopper Matt Danbrook made 33
saves while at the other end of the
rink. Lucan's Steve Watson turned
away 26.
"They both played well. We had
enough chances to win it and he
(Danbrook) stoned us," said Need-
ham.
The winning goal in the second
overtime came when Lincoln Dol -
bear went down the right side on a
breakaway and put it up high on
Watson.
Shayne Whiteside got the other
goal on Watson, early in the second
period while Lucan captain Andy
Ross let a floater go in the first to
beat Danbrook.
Watson got the nod in all three
playoff games and Needham was
very pleased with his effort.
"He played outstanding. He got
beat on a heck of a shot," he said of
Dolhear s winner.
This game was very physical and

several players had to be helped off
the ice. Lucan's Greg DePrest re-

game against Alvinston.
ceived some lumber into his stom-
ach and linemate Rob Davis put a
huge open ice hit on the Flyers'
number one pain in the butt, Marc
Tyler.
Late in the second period the
Irish had a good chance of snap-
ping the 1-1 stalemate when Travis
Stinchcombe went in on alone but
received a vicious chop from Aaron
Griffith.
In the latter stages of the game,
the Irish definitely outworked and
outplayed their opponent but unfor-
tunately did not outscore.
"We're working hard but nothing
is happening," said Needham. "In
regulation and in both overtimes
we should have won it."
Irish 5, Flyers 2
Friday in Alvinston, Scott Riddell
had a goal and an assist for the win-
ners while Mike Robb and Mike
Reid each had a goal and an assist
with the other tally to Ross.
Shawn Reddick and Shayne
Whiteside answered for the hosts.
Flyers 3, Irish 2
In the opener last Wednesday,
Redick, Blair Maclnnis and Jeff
Bloomfield scored for Alvinston
while DePrest and Craig Brown
scored for Lucan. Dwayne Price set
up both Irish goals.
