Times Advocate, 1994-02-16, Page 15Times -Advocate, February 18, 1994 Page • 18 -- Exeter handles Seaforth but can't beat last place Belmont By Fred Groves T -A staff EXETER - With Icss, the Exeter Hawks seem to do better. Although they had 15 skaters for Friday's 7-1 win over the visiting Seaforth Centenaires everyone did their job and the locals looked a lot better than they did two nights ear- lier in a 10-8 loss to the Lucan Irish. Sunday afternoon the Hawks lost a disappointing 6-5 decision to the last place club, the Belmont Pests. With the win and loss, the Hawks now have a 22-13-3 in the OHA Junior Development League's west division. Not always prepared: "We won the last two periods in that game (Lucan). Sometimes we come out strong and other times we don't," said Hawk three-year veteran Na- than Blight. "I don't think people came ready to play, everybody was late and we didn't get on to the warmup on time." Friday the Hawks were more than ready and although they were only up 1-0 after the first period, in- creased that to 3-1 after 40 minutes. Exeter coach George Pratt said un- like Wednesday against the Irish, his team came to beat the Cente- naires. "They were told if they weren't here and ready to go, they wouldn't play." Two players who came with their best in mind were rookie goalie Chris Lyndon who turned away 25 shots and newly acquired defense - man Brett Lammie. Laramie, a former Goderich Jun- ior 'C' Sailor and an Exeter Minor Hockey Association product, has brought a lot of toughness to the blueline. He gave out some big hits espe- cially in the first period which also saw some crunching by forward Todd McCann and defenseman Ja- mie Cornish. Now with eight defenseman at his disposal, Pratt has moved Blight and Brian Gardner up to a forward line. On Friday, Blight responded with his second goal of the season. "I was just trying to feed it to one of my players and it went off some- one and into the net," said Blight. Adds strength up front: As far Senior 'A' hockey Mohawks limp into the playoffs against Petrolia shorthanded By Fred Groves T -A staff EXETER - The troubles the Exeter Mohawks have had all during the regular season with lack of commitment has stretched into the playoffs. Last night at the South Huron Recreation Centre, the Mohawks opened Southwestern Ontario Senior 'A' Hockey League post -season play against the Petrolia Victorians. Game Two is in Petrolia on Friday at 8 p.m. and then its back to Exeter on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. Following Sunday night's practice, coach Dave Revington seemed very frustrated as the Mohawks were expected to have a very short bench for Game One. Centre Tim Shields is out with a separated shoulder, centre Jeff Shipley has a broken wrist, big defenseman Dale Timmermans is out with a shoulder injury, forwards Kevin McArter and Jon Buder are maybes due to knee injuries and Greg Snyder was a question mark for last night as he was having his wisdom teeth out. "With our situation with injuries and lack of commitment, we re a different team." Exeter coach Dave Revington Add to that - the league's leading scorer Joe Scherer is vacationing in Florida and he'll miss thc first three games. Robb Graham won't be available until the weekend, Craig Oster has one more game left on a four -game suspension, Greg Murray is at school and Jacques Beau- lieu is working but he'll be hack for the weekend. "We're going to have to get a couple of juniors (Exeter Junior 'D' Hawks) to help us out," said Revington. The Mohawks have also had several players, including veteran de- fenseman Kris Bedard along with newcomers Todd Broomhead and Rob Warren ,bow out of the picture. Although the Mohawks were going to be able to dress at least six blueliners last night, up front was going to be a big problem. "It's (scoring) going to have to come from other places," said Rev- ington. "We've had trouble keeping our goals down," he said of his team which is very offensive minded. Close standings: Exeter finished the regular season in second place in the seven -team league with a 12-10-2 record. It was a log jam at the top of the standings as Dorchester had 27 points followed by Dunnville, Exeter and Bothwell all at 26. All thc teams make the playoffs and Dorchester, just one point up on the three others, received the hyc. "We needed that hyc to get healthy and organized," said Revington. The Mohawks have allowed the most goals 128 while scoring the most 144. Veteran goalies Rick Pikul and Trevor Hunter have al- lowed an average of 5.33 goals per game. Exeter beat Petrolia three -of -four times they faced them this year. The Mohawks jumped out to a 4-1-2 record in their first six games of the season. "With bur Ciituation with injuries and lack of commitment, were a different team," said Revington. "They've (Petrolia) signed some players and we've lost some." While the Mohawks may have their problems with lack of dedica- tion by some, there are others who continue to be the backbone of the club. Veterans Barry Baynham, Jeff Warren, Ron Elliott and Pikul are part of a group of about 10 who have been very faithful to the club. "We get a lot of mileage out of our corps guys. They rise above the rest," said Revington. as playing up front, he certainly doesn't mind it. Blight said the last time he was a forward was back in peewee. "We need guys up front who will hit because our forwards aren't real big, said Pratt." One big forward who excelled Friday was the west division's top marksman, Shayne Robinson who had three goals and an assist. His second was a shot which found a little daylight in Seaforth's Dana Duskocy's armour and the third was tucked under the crossbar. Steve Farquhar, usually held to a defensive roll had a goal and an as- sist as did Sean McCann. Defense - man Mark Lynn, a former top scor- er when he was a midget with the Generals, alertly stepped in from the blueline and beat Duskocy with a good move. Farquhar came close to getting another as, when killing a penalty which he and Ray Cousineau do well, he stuck his stick out on a clearing pass and the puck almost went into the net. Pests 6, Hawks 5 Exeter came up against a hot goalie Sunday in Belmont's Curtis Gartley as he turned away 41 shots. At the other end of the rink, Kirk Durand made 23 saves. The Hawks were down 1-0 at the end of the third period and 5-2 after two peri- ods. This is the first time this year Ex- eter has lost to the Pests in the five games between them. Scoring for the visitors were Ray Cousineau, Greg Dalrymple, Cor- nish, Jon Schiedel and Robinson. Farquhar played well with two as- sists. The Hawks have two games re- maining in the regular season schedule as they host the league leading Mitchell Hawks on Friday and Sunday wrap things up in Lambeth. Friday is Panther night and any high school student will be admit- ted for $1 Seaforth Centenalres' forward Jamie Ramer was knocked heavily to the ice by Exeter Hawks' defensemen Greg Dalrymple, left; and Brett Lammie, during Friday's OHA Junior Development League game in Exeter.
