Both Lucan and Exeter precision teams brought
home bronze medals from the competition in Dur-
ham over the weekend.

LUCAN - The finale of the High-
way 4 series turned into a marathon
shoot -fest last Wednesday.
In an offensive, forgelabout de-
fense hockey game, the Lucan Irish
outlasted the Exeter Hawks 10-8.
Combined with a 6-5 loss to host
Lambeth on Sunday, the Irish are
now 26-11-2. which they took into
last night's game against Mt.
Brydges.
The win not only gave the Irish d
three -games -to -two win in the regu-
lar season series between the rivals,
but it also squashed the Hawks
chances of finishing second in the
OHA Junior Development League
west division.
"Second or third, it doesn't really
matter. I'm happy if we finish third,
that was one of our goals," said Ex-
eter coach George Pratt.
Down 5-1 after 20 minutes and 8-
5 at the end of 40 minutes, the
Hawks battled hack to make it 8-7
early in the third frame.
"It must be tough to be Lucan,
being up 8-1 and almost losing it,"
said Pratt. He recalled a game,
when he played for the Hawks, and
Exeter came hack after being down
9-2 against Clinton.
The Hawks scored just 52 sec-
onds into the game but after Irish
captain Andy Ross tied it up, the
hosts put three more pucks behind
Exeter starting goalie Kirk Durand.
"The first period was text book
hockey. We played as good as any-
one can play," said Irish coach Ken
Needham.
He said the trio of Scott Riddell,

Jay Jackson and Steve Matthews
played well all game.
A Steve Moore shot into the top
corner, Ores DePrest pouncing on
his own rebound, and another one
by Moore saw the Irish totally in
control.
Pratt saw enough of Durand and
pulled him in favour of rookie
Chris Lyndon. But the Irish had no
mercy on him and continued to fill
the net.
"On the first four goals I couldn't
really fault Kirk. 1 pulled him to
change things a bit," said Pratt.
The Irish received two more
goals from DePrest plus singles
from Jeremy Jemec, Scott Riddell,
Mike Robb and Dwayne Price. An-
swering for the Hawks who have
really built up a reputation as a
come -back team were Todd
McCann and Shayne Robinson
with two each, Jon Schiedel, Ray
Cousineau, Dave Dalrymple and
Nathan Burns.
Schiedel did a great job fore -
checking very aggressively all
night and Cousineau shot the puck
very hard at the Irish netminders.
"You have to give them credit,"
-said Needham -of -the Hawks' effort.
"We had them and we let them go,
there's no excuse."
Quick goal: Dalrymple's goal
just 47 seconds into the third really
brought the Hawks to life and they
came very close to tieing it. Exet-
er's momentum started late in the
second period.
"Once we started hitting we out-
scored them 4-0 in the last 10 min-
utes of the second period," said
Pratt.
In the five games these two teams
have played, both have scored 32
goals. Coming into the game, Exet-
er had scored more goals then any
other team in the west division.
Keeping the puck out of the net
however continues to be a big prob-
lem as evident by Wednesday
night's barrage.
"Come playoff time we're going
to have to get our goals against
down - keep that magic number of
three and under," said Pratt.
At the other coda t e,.p nd,.Lu-
caQ's gkoaJtending was not that
sharp either - as proven by the eight
Exeter goals. Stuart Ashton started
in net but he was injured and re-
placed by Steve Watson.
Ashton was hurt in the second pe-
riod when Hawks' defenseman Ja-
mie Cornish rushed the net and col-
lided with the goalie. Cornish's
bold move ended with Todd
McCann picking up a loose puck
and scoring his second of the night.
Lansers 6. Irish 5
The Irish could only get 17 shots
away as their offensive power was
not overly strong.
Scoring for the Irish were Ma-
thews, Jackson, Travis Stinch-
combe, newcomer Jamie Hicks and
Mike Reid.
