You Can Fix
It Corner
$
David Eastw
g• Dear Dave - I have a 1985 four -cylinder Ford. Re-
cen , any time 1 drive for more than 20 minutes, the car starts
running very rough and then stalls. If I wait awhile, it will start
and run again for another short time. It seems to be worst on
cold, wet days. Can I fix it?
.1. Elliott, Clinton
A• It sounds like you have carburetor icing. If you look down
the throat of the carburetor the next time it stalls, you will probably
find frost or ice build-up. That would explain the waiting period,
because it would take that long for the engine heat to melt the ice
built up on the inside of the carburetor.
Your best bet is to check the thermostatic control valve located in
the snorkel of the air cleaner assembly. This can be done with a
flashlight and a small mirror. First check the vacuum hose to the
valve for cracking or leaking. The check to see if the valve moves
freely. If they look all right, then using the mirror and flashlight
(warning, keep all loose clothing and jewellery away from the en-
gine) have someone start the car while you watch for the valve op-
eration. The valve should move up into the closed position, al-
lowing the air to enter through the hot air manifold. As the engine
heats up, it should move down into the open position. If these ac-
tions do not happen, you should replace the valve assembly and vac-
uum hose.
If you have to change the valve, try the Chilton's manual, which
you can borrow from the local library.
Q• Dear Dave - I have a beautiful old lamp that does not
wor The little switch does not click any more and the electric
cord has lots of cracks in it. Can I fix it?
S. Miller, Exeter.
A• The best thing you can do for your lamp is to replace both
the cord and the socket assembly. For less than $5 and a few min-
utes' work, you can have it working again. Start by unplugging the
lamp and removing the light bulb and the shade support. Next try
using your thumb pressure to pop off the outer shell of the socket. If
this does not work, carefully use a small flat -tip screwdriver and pry
the outer shell off. Remove the shell and insulating sleeve and save
for later.
Pull the socket up a few inches and disconnect the wires. Remove
the socket base by loosening the small grub screw on the side of the
collar. Tie tightly a long strong string or fine wire to the bare end of
the cord. Now, gently pull out the socket end of the lamp. Throw
out the old cord and tie the string to the new cord and gently pull it
back through the lamp, using the string hanging out the socket end.
Feed it through the socket base. Strip about three quarters of an inch
of insulation off the socket end of the wire. Twist the bare strands
and reconnect it to the new socket assembly, by wrapping them
clockwise around the screws. Make sure not to let the bare wire
touch anything else after the screw i$ tightened.
Replace the insulation sleeve and outershell. Make sure the grub
screw is snug. Reinstall the bulb and shade. Now, plug it in and try
it out.
