Volunteer of the week
A Times Advocate community feature
Shirley Cooper
For well over 20 years Shirley Cooper has been volunteering
her time with a number of organizations in the region.
The Elimville resident is still a regular volunteer at the
South Huron Hospital's rummage sale as well as giving of
her time to the South Huron Women's Institute.
She also work on quilting lorojects with the UCW and Re-
bekahs. Cooper said a lot of the work she doesn't consider vol-
unteer because its something she enjoys, so it seems more like
a hobby than work.
One such example is her efforts with Exeter's fair board
where she helps mainly with meals.
"There's always volunteer work to be done," Cooper said.
"There are so many organizations that need people to help
out."

IS A PRIVATE FUNERAL SUFFICIENT?
There has been a trend recently toward private funerals. We don't think
that's healthy, end we want to tell you why.
A private funeral typically consists of a graveside service without moumers,
or a private viewing followed by burial or ow -nation. There often is no
religious service, no eulogy, no provision for mourners other than the
deceased's immediate family.
Those who would choose such a funeral do not want to meet their friends,
business associates or neighbours while they are mourning. They may teal
embarrassed by expressions of sympathy, or they may believe grief Is a
private matter, not to be shared.
But they are depriving themselves, as well as other people who knew the
deceased, of the acknowledgement of death. The private funeral, 1111 does
not provide for viewing of the body, may put off the final acceptance of
death, And that merely prolongs the grief.
A traditional funeral service also allows friends and acquaintances to share
their sorrow, providing the mutual support that helps each to recover from
their toss.
As funeral directors, we can discuss funeral services and their value with
you. Please stop by if you wild like more Information.

Everett Haist turns 101
Birthday celebrationsin Zurich
ZURICH - Tuesday afternoon
Bible Study was led by Rev. Gani
Lazard, Zurich United Church.
Wednesday afternoon tea was
served by Verda Baechler, a resi-
dent of Maplewoods Apartments
and Liaison Officer for the Home
Auxiliary.
Rev. Henry Annen, Hensall Unit-
ed Church conducted Thursday af-
ternoon Chapel Service. Fr. Matthi-
as Wronski, St. Boniface Church,
Zurich celebrated Mass.
What do you do when you are
101 years old? Just ask Everett
Haist! Haist donned his blue pin
striped hanker trousers, put on his
favourite tie and tweed jacket and
greeted passersby with a hearty hel-
lo and showed his collection of
birthday cards. He took a moment
to teach Rev. Gani Lazard of Zu-
rich United Church the art of play-
ing crokinole and passed the after-
noon with his son Stanley.
In the evening, like many during
our cabin fever days, our minds
think of other places we would like
to be. Everett shared Josef Risi's
homesick feeling as he watched a
ideo of Central Switzerland, de-
picting the beauty of five cantins
(provinces) which included the city
of Luzern and Mount Pilatus. Luz-
ern is the city nearest to the village
v, here Risi grew up. Ski country!
After the video, Haist was sere-
naded with some homegrown enter-
tainment from the residents. Rose
sterner played the piano solo "One
l)ay at a Time" and accompanied
Nelson Howe on the violin. Orville
Witmer sang a solo "Let the Rest of
the World Go By" with the accom-
paniment of Cathy Shantz on piano.
Vera Thiel read a poem entitled
"How Old is Old.r Ruby Hoggarth
recited a birthday poem from her
youth.
Haist has been a resident of the
Horne the past three and a half
ears, was a proprietor of bakeries
in Zurich and Hensall and involved
in his father's brick manufacturing
plant in Crediton along with many
other occupations- over the years.
Haist has resided in Ontario, Michi-
gan and California and likes to tell
of the 6 1/2 foot sail fish he caught
in Florida, which he has mounted
in his home in Dashwood.
Nurses Jill Geiger, Grace Hum-
mel, Barb Regier and Jean Cole-
man helped Risi and Shantz serve
over 40 people with the 101 Birth-
day Cake prepared by the kitchen
staff. Haist thanked everyone for
their best wishes for the very best
in his new year and the beginning
of his second century!
Welcome back to Loreen Devine
of BWRH Apartments. Our best
wishes to Annie Willert at St. Jo-
seph's Hospital, London and Fer-
gus Turnbull, BWRH Apartments
who is visiting South Huron Hospi-
tal, Exeter.
The residents look forward to a
February Birthday Party with St.
Peter's Catholic Church, St. Joseph
on Valentine's Day and the Chris-
tian Reformed Church visit this
past Tuesday.

A very Targe 10 year research study Involving more
than 1400 diabetics has shown that rigorous
control of blood glucose can significantly reduce the
risk of eye and kidney damage. A blood glucose
monitor is good insurance for a healthier diabetic.
Concerned about your sodium intake? Remarkably, 3/4 of the salt we
eat comes from processed foods. Only 15% of our sodium intake is
from the salt shaker. It is still a good idea not to salt your food at the
table.
Prothrombin time (PT) is a blood test used to monitor the effects of anti-
coagulant drugs ("blood thinners"). Some non-prescription drugs like
A.S.A., antacids, antihistamines and alcohol affect the results of PT
blood tests. If you are taking anticoagulant drugs, check with our
pharmacists before choosing a non-prescription medication.
"Keep out of reach of children" is a label we often put on medicine
bottles. Some iron tablets still look like candy and it doesn't take too
many to poison a child. Take care in the storage of all medications.
Pharmacists are a great source of drug information. Be sure you
understand the important facts about your medication before you leave
the pharmacy. There are no silly questions when it comes to drugs.
