Sponsorship for Air Show slow
By Fred Groves
T -A staff
GRAND BEND - Organizers of
the 1994 Grand Bend International
Air Show got some very good
news Saturday morning.
As plans continue for what well
may be one of the largest and most
spectacular aviation exhibitions
ever in Ontario, more acts are con -
finning they will he here May 27-
29.
Saturday the group was told that
the United States Drug Interception
Team will be making it's only Ca-
nadian appearance at Grand Bend.
The air show has brought a lot of
attention from across North Ameri-
ca.
"They're (pilots and exhibitors)
are all saying why hasn't anyone
thought of this sooner," said Laur-
en Lee who is in charge of getting
the planes and exhibits.
What's different about this show,
called 'Up, Up and Awaves', is that
not only will there be two actual air
shows but the public will have a
unique opportunity to enjoy the to-
tal aviation experience.
Planes and all kinds of aviation
displays will be at the Huron Park
Airport for the public to view.
There will be barbeques and dances
and some special surprises.
"Our major acts are confirmed.
The military confirmation should
be forthcoming," said Lee. She said
1,500 invitations have gone out to
exhibitors.
While the air show held two
years ago featured the Canadian
Forces acrobatic team the Snow-
birds, this year's event will have
teams from the United States.
One of the biggest features will
be the tribute to the Word War II
D -Day battle. Planes from that era
will perform.
Where's the money?: The budget
is expected to exceed $150,0(X) and
about $45,000 of that is expected
to come from corporate sponsor-
ship. However, that source seems
to be not as large as previously
planned.
The corporate sponsorships are
coming in but they're coming in
slowly," said Tom Johnston the
show's marketing consultant. "Al-
though it's not as positive as I'd like
to see, I'm hopeful it will reach
Huron Teachers Fund
promotes healthy students
CLINTON - Teachers in Onta-
rio deal with the realities of our
changing society on a daily basis.
One of these realities is the fact
that a significant number of chil-
dren do not begin the school day
witha filling, nutritious meal.
In recent years nutrition has be-
come recognized as an important
factor in the ability of children to
learn.
The Ontario Public School
Teachers in Huron County be-
lieve that a partnership between
government, teachers, parents and
organizations interested in child
nutrition can successfully meet
the challenge posed by this threat
to our youth.
In August of 1992 our federa-
tion at its annual meeting created
a Healthy Learners Fund to help
support existing nutrition pro-
grams and to organize programs
where a need was demonstrated.
Ontario Public School Teachers
in Huron County have raised over
$2,000 since September 1992- to
support nutrition education and
food supplement programs in sev-
eral elementary schools.
Schools have been notified that
funds exist on a matching basis
and to date all applications have
been approved. We have support-
ed programs at Vanastra, Victoria,
Blyth, Grey, Seaforth, Wingham,
Turnbcrry, Colborne, East Wawa -
nosh, and Zurich schools.
Our funds are certainty not
enough to provide long term sup-
port to one let alone several
school 'areas but we have been
modestly successful in providing
seed money to get local projects
started.
Our Winter Meeting scheduled
for February 23, 1994 at the Clin-
ton Town Hall will feature a pres-
entation by Beth Wilck, the nutri-
tionist from the Health Unit. We
will be once again trying to raise
additional funds to support our
projects. We have appreciated
community support for our pro-
gram. For more information con-
tact Jim Binns, president, OPSTF-
Huron, 519-273-5895.
$45,(x0."
The tnajor source of revenue for
the show will come from the sale
of buttons which act as a pass to
Af
all the events. These will go on
sale on March 5 and by the time
the early bird draw comes around

on April 21, it is hoped as many as
7,000 will be sold.
As plans continue, changes are
being made. It was originally
thought that the Grand Bend Air-
port would be used as a large park-
ing lot and buses would shuttle
spectators to both the beach, where
they would view the airshow, and
to the Huron Park Airport.
Buses were a major budget item
but since not as many are required,
that is one Tess large experience.
"We're comfortable with parking
perimetering Grand Bend. We do
have the acreage but it will take a
lot of control," said Grand Bend
councillor Bill Uniac.
It was confirmed on Saturday
that actor Cliff Robertson would
not be attending and the committee
was going to try and get another
big name draw.
Local schools have been contact-
ed and 230 principals in surround-
ing counties have been notified. It
is expected that May 27 will be a
day in which thousands of students
will come and view the displays.
On February 26, the Huron Park
committee will meet at the recrea-
tion complex to work on the site
plan. In order to keep the airport
secure, it was decided there would
be no food or beverage concessions
within the fenced area.
