LUCAN - What started out as a
calm and ordinary gaine last
Wednesday night in Lucan, ended
in a great deal of commotion and
even a little confusion.
Lucan beat Seaforth 4-1 and Fri-
day beat visiting North Middlesex
Stars 7-2 . Saturday's game in Mt.
Brydges was postponed.
While the host Irish hell' a slim
1-0 lead after 20 minutes and were
up 2-0 after two periods against the
Centenaires, the final period was
There was lots of action around the Lucan net last Wednesday night as Irish 'alie Stuart

EXETER - One thing for certain,
the Exeter Hawks are building up a
reputation of being a team which
falls behind early in the game.
But much to •the disappointment
of their opposition, they are coming
from behind to win hockey games.

first period, the Hawks bounced
hack to heat the visiting Lambeth
Lancers 10-7. The win improved
Exeter's OHA Junior Development
League west division record to 18-
10-2.
It also stretched their winning
streak to five games, their longest
of the season.
A week earlier at the South Hu-
ron Recreation Centre, the Hawks
slipped behind against Mt. Brydges
but came hack to win 6-5. Friday,
paced by the three -goal effort of
Scan McCann, the locals again had
to overcome another deficit.
HAWK WATCH
With 10 regular season
names remaining. Exeter
Hawks' winger . Shayne
Robinson, the OHA Jr.
Development League's
west division leading
scorer, is just 12 points
away from hitting the
100 -point mark.
"The biggest thing is being confi-
dent," said Exeter coach George
Pratt. As soon as you jump on thcm
and start criticizing, they get
down."
After the first intermission, the
Hawks stormed out of the dressing
room and were up 5-4 before the
midway point of the second period.
"Just keep them focused on the
rcst of the game," said Pratt of the
secret to his tcani coming from he -
hind.
While Scan McCann notched his
27, 28, and 29th of the season, it
was scoring from a few who don't
usually show up on the game sheet
a lot which made the difference.
Lee Gihhings, recovering slowly
for a wrist injury notched his sec-
ond although he thought it was only
his first, defenseman Nathan Blight
got his first and Steve Farquhar got
his I I th.
Shayne Robinson, picking up his
88th point of the year, had two
goals and two assists while Todd
McCann connected and Ray Cousi-
neau and Shane McDonald each
had two assists.
Gihbings, who is due for kidney
surgery ,in the next week or so,
looked as though he has not missed
any ice time at all. On one shift he
raced behind the net and while get-
ting hit against the hoards, man-
aged to get the puck out to Sean
McCann who scored.
"I practiced Tuesday and I played
a little shinney over the holidays,"
said Gihhings.
The rookie forward who played
for the Clinton midgets last year is
glad to be hack on the ice.
"The doctor said I could go back
to work," said Gihbings. "O¢
Wednesday the doctor said it
(wrist) was coming along."
intimidation: The first time Ex-
eter and Lambeth played this year,
six Hawks were kicked out in the
7-1 Exeter win.
Friday Lambeth's Jason VanGeel
Lound his way onto the Hawks'
bench andfollowing a scuffle with
Jason McBride both were ejected.
Exeter also lost Mark Livermore as
referee Steve Gould gave him a
misconduct for not going to the
bench.
"I didn't see it, 1 was watching the
play. 1 heard the ruckus and turned
around," said Pratt of the situation.
For Lambeth, who is battling the
Hawks for fourth place, Glen
MacKinnon and Dan Schenkcl had
two goals each with singles to Dave
Johnston, Tom Walker and Jamie
Allison. •
After Allison scored, the Lancers
seventh goal coming in the third pe-
riod and putting the visitors up by
one, Exeter goalie Kirk Durand
skated away from thc net and
hanged his stick against the boards.
Lambeth almost got an eighth
goal when Durand, now sporting a
4.86 goals against average, watched
as a shot which hit thc boards be-
hind him came out, hit his stick and
just missed going over the line.
Exeter's defense continued to
have trouble getting the puck out of
their own end and late in thc game,
veteran Jamie Cornish put the puck
right on a Lambeth player's stick.
"it's something now he's able to
get away with but come playoffs,
that's going t hurt us," said Pratt.
Hawks h penings:...The Hawks
arc not at me Friday but travel to
Alvinst to take on the Flyers.
Next home action is January 28
when they host the Lucan Irish.
That night will see Wally the Wild-
cat, mascot of the St. Thomas Wild-
cats of thc Colonial Hockey League
come to town.

when all the action happened.
Thoi Irish scored twice, once ir?to
the empty net and Seaforth cracked
Stuart Ashton's shutdid, but it
was the physical aspect o ••the game
which caught the crowd's attention.
Centenaires' forward Adam Rog-
ers had been a constant antagonist
all game and when he cross-
checked Irish captain Andy Ross
twice from behind on the same shat
late in the game, things erupted'
Before Ross could get a piece of
Rogers, Lucan centre Mike Reid
had pushed Rogers away from the
main scrum and with just 15 sec-
onds left in the game, had the Sea -
forth player down on the ice.
While that was going on, Lucai's
Craig Brown and Seaforth's Kar-
sten Carroll exchanged punches.
Both of them were given penalties,
as indicated by the game sheet,
however while Brown left the game
Carroll went to his bench but
stayed in the game.
Carroll came and argued with ref-
eree Jeff Smith in front of the time-
keepers bqx and stayed on the ice,
playing the final 15 seconds.
Lucan coach Ken Needham was
upset by' the actions of the night's
opponents.
"There's no need for that. What's
that accomplish with the way the
score was," said Needham.
Before the altercations, and there
were several others during the
game, the Irish played well in front
of rookie goalie Stuart Ashton. The
only goal the visitors scored was a
bit of a fluke.
"It hit our defenseman and then it
hit the post," described Ashton of
the goal credited to Seaforth's Steve
"There's no need for that.
What's that accomplish
when the score's like that?"
Geiger.
The goal came with 7:49 left in
the game and it was the closest the
Irish have come to a shutout win
this season.
Scoring for the winners were Tra-
vis Stinchcombe with a pair, Rob
Davis and Greg DePrest into the
empty net.
Seaforth was trying to get close
to Ashton all night and at times
crowded the crease.
"I like the rough stuff in front of
the net. The coaches don't like it,"
said Ashton who played for the 11-
derton midgets and John Paul II
high school last year.
In the past few months he has
seen limited time between the pipes
and has been hampered by a reoc-
curring groin injury.
"This is probably my hest game
this year. I really don't want to sit
out much longer."
Ashton had a lot of help in front
of him on Wednesday as the Irish
concentrated on taking care of their
own end of the rink instead of
pumping in goals.
"We were much better in our own
end than we have been in a long
time," said Needham.
