The ministry operates local road information services through- out the province. Call your local office for details or the MiO 1NFO Iine in Toronto at 1-800- 268-2376 toll free. Driver's checklist Do have enough warm clothing including coat, gloves, boots and hat. You never know when you'll need them. Do keep enough windshield washer anti -freeze on hand. Do leave one window open just a crack when driving. This will im- prove circulation, reduce condensa- tion and fogging in side windows, and prevent carbon -monoxide poi- soning. But don't open the rear window on a stationwugon or mini - Boat stolen from Hay Township cottage EXETER - The OPP are in- vestigating two thefts in the past week. One involved the theft of a boat from a cottage in the High- lands Three subdivision in Hay Township. The boat, valued at $1,000, was a red 15 -foot Crest - liner Runabout with an 85 - horsepower Johnson motor, on an Explorer trailer. A coat was stolen from a young female while she was vis- iting with friends at a residence in Exeter, say police. The coat is described as a beige barn coat, valued' at $150, with a black leather wallet in the pocket, con- taining $100. In the early morning hours of New Years Day, police were dispatched to a complaint of a disturbance in Crediton. Several . people had gathered outside a residence. The OPP arrested one male for causing a distur- bance, holding him in custody pending further charges. In the early morning hours of December 29, someone darn - aged the pop machine in front of the Knechtel Grocery Store in Hensall. Damage was estimated at about $300. Don't drink and drive - whether the car is in motion or not. Alcohol makes a lousy addition to., your winter survival kit; it causes the blood vessels close to the skin to expand and speeds up the loss of body heat. It also makes you drow- sy and you could freeze to death while sleeping. Don't brake, steer, change lanes or take other driving actions too quickly. Driver error is still the number one cause of collision, and that is never more true than in the winter. Don't follow to closely. To check whether you're doing that, select an object at the side of the road and, when the vehicle in front passes it, start counting, "One -thousand -one, one -thousand two...." If you reach the object before getting to one - thousand -four, you 're too close. Don't get close to snow plows. "They're out there making the roads safer for everyone. Let them do their job. Don't over -exert yourself trying to get your car back on the road. A little energy conservation goes a long way to maintaining alertness.
