Stay safe on the roads this winter
TORON'TO - Here are some tips
for safe winter driving from the
Ontario Ministry of i'ransiorta-
uon. The ministry operates local
road information services through-
out the province. Call your local
office for details or the MiO
1NFO Iine in Toronto at 1-800-
268-2376 toll free.
Driver's checklist
Do have enough warm clothing
including coat, gloves, boots and
hat. You never know when you'll
need them.
Do keep enough windshield
washer anti -freeze on hand.
Do leave one window open just a
crack when driving. This will im-
prove circulation, reduce condensa-
tion and fogging in side windows,
and prevent carbon -monoxide poi-
soning. But don't open the rear
window on a stationwugon or mini -
Boat stolen from Hay
Township cottage
EXETER - The OPP are in-
vestigating two thefts in the past
week.
One involved the theft of a
boat from a cottage in the High-
lands Three subdivision in Hay
Township. The boat, valued at
$1,000, was a red 15 -foot Crest -
liner Runabout with an 85 -
horsepower Johnson motor, on
an Explorer trailer.
A coat was stolen from a
young female while she was vis-
iting with friends at a residence
in Exeter, say police. The coat
is described as a beige barn coat,
valued' at $150, with a black
leather wallet in the pocket, con-
taining $100.
In the early morning hours of
New Years Day, police were
dispatched to a complaint of a
disturbance in Crediton. Several .
people had gathered outside a
residence. The OPP arrested
one male for causing a distur-
bance, holding him in custody
pending further charges.
In the early morning hours of
December 29, someone darn -
aged the pop machine in front of
the Knechtel Grocery Store in
Hensall. Damage was estimated
at about $300.
If anyone has any information
about these crimes, contact the
OPP at 235-1300, or Crime
Stoppers at 1-800-265-1777.
van. It allows exhaust fumes in-
side.
Do take Borne time to learn prop-
er winter driving skills. Some pri-
vate courses are available; local
M] O offices, public libraries arid
police detachments are also good
sources of information.
Do remember to buckle up, sec
that young children are in an appro-
priate car seat, and that older ones
and all adult passengers use seat
belts. it's the law -- and, as of Janu-
ary 1, 1994, the penalty for drivers
pot using a scat belt or ensuring
passengers under 16 are properly
buckled in not only a fine, but also
two demerit points.
Don't drink and drive - whether
the car is in motion or not. Alcohol
makes a lousy addition to., your
winter survival kit; it causes the
blood vessels close to the skin to
expand and speeds up the loss of
body heat. It also makes you drow-
sy and you could freeze to death
while sleeping.
Don't brake, steer, change lanes
or take other driving actions too
quickly. Driver error is still the
number one cause of collision, and
that is never more true than in the
winter.
Don't follow to closely. The most
common winter mishap is sliding
into another vehicle when there
isn't•enough room to stop safely.
Winter conditions often make ob-
jects and other hazards much hard -
Greeting for New Year
A New Year's message was made loud and clear on the Butler Street front lawn of Perry Cas-
kanette in Lucan. His son Alex, almost two, helped pile the snow and Perry carved out his
greeting in big block letters for his neighbours and everyone to see.
at
would you
do if you
won?
And remember... Say yes to
ENCORE
er w spot. it's a good idea to allow
four seconds between your vehicle
and the one in front. To check
whether you're doing that, select an
object at the side of the road and,
when the vehicle in front passes it,
start counting, "One -thousand -one,
one -thousand two...." If you reach
the object before getting to one -
thousand -four, you 're too close.
Don't get close to snow plows.
"They're out there making the roads
safer for everyone. Let them do
their job.
Don't panic if you have an emer-
gency on the road. If you don't
have a cellular phone to call for
help, use emergency flashers, place
a -warning Tight on top df your car,
or tie a brightly colored scarf or
piece of cloth to the aerial or door

hosted a •Wine and Cheese party,
followed by a tour of the lights
with driver Gary McFalls taking
the group to Exeter and all around
Lucan and came back to listen to
members of the Medway choir
singing Christmas carols.
On December 13 there was a spe-
cial Christmas dinner with former
resident Lil Dobbs as a guest. Mike
O'Shea played the piano and every-

beautiful music. For the residents
with birthdays, coffee anbirthday
_ cake was served.

handle • - anything to make you
more visible and attract help.
Don't over -exert yourself trying
to get your car back on the road. A
little energy conservation goes a
long way to maintaining alertness.
Don't let all the occupants in
your car sleep at the same time if
you're stopped. At least one person
should remain awake a) all times,
to check for frostbite on the others
and watch for help.
