Mohawks demolish visiting Mudcats 11 -

EXETER - It was perhaps their
biggest win ever over their biggest
rival.
Sunday night at the South Huron
Recreation Centre, the Exeter Mo-
hawks demolished the road -weary
Dunnville Mudcats 11-2. With the
win, and Friday's loss to Petrolia,
the Mohawks have ran their South-
western Ontario Senior 'A' Hockey
League record to 7-2-2.
The defending league champion
Mudcats found out at the last min-
ute Sunday they didn't have a bus
available for the three-hour trip so
they had to pile into their cars.
Highway tired and coming off a
loss the night before, the Mudcats
trailed 4-1 after the first period and
5-1 after40 minutes.
"They (Mudcats) came in pretty
flat. They lost last night to Petrolia
and they haven't had a good start,"
said Exeter coach Dave Revington.
Two years ago the Mohawks won
the title and last season struggled.
In 1992-93 it was Dunnville win-
ning it all and this winter they don't
look as sharp.
"After having won it last year, the
next year its hard to get that fire."
Exeter's offence was led by the
three -goal efforts of veteran winger
Joe Scherer and newcomer Jacques
Beaulieu who, for part of the game,
played between the Mohawks best

Sunday's
Preview
Sunday when the Aylmer Hor-
nets come to town, the Mohawks
will probably be without the ser-
vices of defensemen Dale Tim-
mermans out with sore ribs. For-
ward Jeff Shipley who did not
finish Sunday's game is also
questionable.
The Mohawks have split their
two contests thus far with the
Hornets, a 7-5 in Aylmer on
Nov. 9 and the Hornets were the
winners 9-6 in Exeter on Nov.

one-two punch of Scherer and Greg
Snyder.
Also scoring for the winners were
Greg Murray with two, Richard
Hawkins, Tim Shields and Jon
Buder. Murray had a big five -point
night as he helped set up three
gots.
It looked like a typical night for
Exeter goalie Rick Pikul as he
made several big stops and turned
away 30 Dunnville shots.
"Pikul can discourage them a lit-
tle bit when he takes away good of-
fensive opportunities," said Reving-
ton.
The only goals Pikul gave up
were to Dan Woitowicz in the first
period and in the third to Geno Los-
tracco.
At the other end of the rink, Mud -
cats' John MacDonald may have let
in 10 of the 11 Exeter goals but
most of them came on second
chances as his defence did not clear
the puck or take the body.
"I thought that fellow played
well. Tle made some great stops,"
said Revington.
Battling bodies: Just like any
other Exeter -Dunnville confronta-
tion, this one had its very physical
moments as well as some moments
of high emotion.
With eight minutes left m the sec-
ond period, Exeter's Wayne Urb-
shou managed to hold his own in a
fight with Woitowicz. Although

much smaller in size, Urbshou was
given the aggressor penalty.
On the same stoppage of play,
Mary Rutledge and Dunnville's
Scott Allemang squared off but
their bout was secondary although
they were ejected.
In the third period, Buder was on
the receiving end of a Dave Butler
punch to the face. Butler managed
to get Buder in the corner and when
referee Guy Constant was not look-
ing, get his glove up onto Buder's
nose.
The Exeter forward went down
hard to the ice and was bleeding
quite a bit but he did manage to re-
turn to the game. There was no pen-
alty on the play.
Late in the third, a water boule
was thrown from the Dunnville
bench and although Constant did
not give the Mudcats a penalty im-
mediately, he did slap them with a
bench minor.
The Mohawks have added de-
fenseman Greg Ryan to the lineup
and the 21 -year-old brings - with
him a lot of hockey experience.
"He's going to be a great addi-
tion. He played four years in the
OHL (Ontario Hockey League) and
was the London Knights first draft
choice," said Revington.
Ryan spent the past two years as
captain of the Ottawa 67's of the
OHL.
Petrolia 6. Exeter 4
A short bench meant the Mo-
hawks were Banded just their sec-
ond los of the season Friday night
in Petrolia.
Snyder led the Mohawks' offence
with two goals and an assist with
the other tallies from Beaulieu and
Murray.
"It was probably the best collec-,
tively poor effort we've had all
year," said Revington. "Trevor
(Hunter) was all alone and had. 40
shots," he said of the Mohawks'
goalie.
Veteran defenseman Dale Tim-
mermans was hurt in this game as
he pulled some muscles around his
rib cage.

again Sunday when they host the

Battling for a loose puck along the boards on Sunday were
Exeter's Greg Murray, left; and Dunnville's Terry Ellwood.
