',mean recently completed work on
a new pavilion in the Elm Street
Park. Twenty-eight members ot
the club rasied funding for the pro-
ject over• a two year period. The
pavilion is mealu•to provide shel-
ter to park visitors or gathering of
people. The new structure is a
complement to renovations and en-
hancements to the existing play-
ground equipment presently under-
way and a Grand Opening of the
pavilion is planned for spring/
summer cif 1994.
Chartefimember Art Bell, made
significant contributions to the or-
ganization of the project. He was

site supervisor. Bell is ,rick to
point out that, "The all Street
project is aresult of great commu-
nity support and teamwork. Tits

various fund raising activities and
many significant others helped out
wit the actual construction."
Lucan Optimist's honoured Bell
by naming the pavilion after him.
Bell, a Charter Member, is also the
first life member nominated by the
Lucan Club. Bell's vision of the
park is a place friendly to children
and comfortable for families. The
club recognized Bell for his self-

::EXETER - The Exeter United
Church evening U.C.W. unit held
its November meeting in'the church
parlour with Grace Drummond pre-
siding.
The meeting began with two min-
utes silence in memory of Avis
Cudmorc, followed by a reading
"To Those Who Mourn". Following
the roll call, the minutes and treas-
urer's report were given. Final plans
were made for the trmanr Novem-
ger 13.
Aftcr the business Leona Morley
and her group took charge of the
program which took Remembrance
Day as its theme. She introduced
Dorothy Chapman who spoke on
her travels to Chernobyl in the
Ukraine to help the children ex-
posed to radiation. She was thanked
by Vera Armstrong and the meet-
ing was adjourned.

The next major Optimist project
is the Carolina Golf, March 4,5,6,
1994. Steve Storey, committee
chairman, describes the event as
"A first of its kind, featuring mini -
golf, steak dinner and driving
skills". Senior foursomes will tee
off on the Friday night, while all
"Others will play the course on the
following night. The Grand Prize
is a trip for four to the Carolinas
fora golf vacation.
The optimist mandate is to serve
youth in the community. Currently
fund-raising efforts generate over
530,000 per year. This is directed
toward youth related activities in
Lucan. lbe next event is the annu-
al ribs and tails dinner November
19, 1993. The club meet below the
Lucan Library at 7:30 p.m. on the
first and fourth Monday of each
month. They openly welcome new
members interested in building up
community through the youth of
Lucan.
