Big band sound to be t reCreaed at Museum GRAND BEND - Fond mem- ories and lively music will bring the atmosphere of the original Lakeview Casino to life for a big band event at the Lambton Heritage Museum on Saturday, November 6. The main -street structure was a major landmark of the Lake Huron shoreline for a half cen- tury. The rich, full sound of the big band will help to recreate the nostalgic atmosphere of the Lakeview Casino' as the Forest Excelsior Band will be playing dance hits from the 40's and -50s, beginning at '8 pan. The Forest Excelsior Band has the distinction of having actually played in the Lakeview Casino, and is also considered Canada's oldest community band. Visi- tors and guests are encouraged to dress in the style of their fa- vourite decade. The museum is the permanent home of the Elland Eric McII- roy collection, an extensive as- sortment of promotional pos- ters, and band photos spreading from 1917 to the 1950's. Tal- ents that played at the Lake- view Casino included Rudy Vallee, Louis Armstrong, Bert Niosi, Gordie Tapp, the Haines Sisters, Juliet, Lionel Thornton, Tommy Dorsey, and the Glenn Miller Orchestra. The casino's original piano stool on which Louis Arm- strong sat will be used through- out the evening. Lynda Hillman Rapley, noted local comedian, will be presenting - a comic sketch based on the unique and fascinating local history of Grand Bend and the Lakeview Casino. Advance tickets are available from the museum for $12. For a $75 donation, patrons of the event will enjoy reserved seat- ing, a casino souvenir, and tax receipt. One feature will be smoke-free bowling centres under Sudbury's No Smoking By -Law. This will likely lead to better scores by sen- ior teams due to the absence of car- bon monoxide from second hand cigarette smoke. Another feature, because of the absence of lawn bowling facilities in Sudbury, 10 pin bowling has been sanctioned for the first time as one of the 15 events. Other planned events are carpet bowling, contract bridge, cribbage, darts, euchre, 5 pin bowling, golf, horseshoes, shuffleboard, snooker, swimming, tennis, triathlon and walking. Huron -Perth -Middlesex (H.P.M.) District, at last Tuesday's meeting at St. Marys Friendship Centre, vot- ed to include 10 pin bowling and lawn bowling in the 1994 H.P.M. District Games being hosted by the Town of Strathroy next June. H.P.M. District has voted to es- tablish a Historical and Archives Committee to compile all available information, pictures and videos from the first senior games held at St. Marys in 1985 up to and includ- ing 1993 at Goderich. The next H.P.M. meeting will be Tuesday, November 16 at the Mitchell lawn bowling centre. 5 YEAR TERM Rate subject to change 11 LAURENTIAN BANK OF CANADA TG/AGES 8.7% SINCE 1846 CONTACT: DON THOMPSON 386 Main St. S.
